Just a reminder that therapists and counselors are only human, meaning they can be sexists and pickmes like anyone else. If you’re a woman, be doubly aware that even well-meaning counselors have difficulty with women feeling and expressing anger. (Think about the stereotype of our emotionality and the fact that we’re not socially permitted to feel the ONE emotion we let men express freely.)

Studies also show that therapists will often focus on the woman in couples therapy rather than LVM behavior. SHE’S the one that needs to modify how she behaves — even if it’s in response to his wrongdoing. Push back or leave any counselor that disproportionately makes you responsible for saving the relationship.

My therapist is the most amazing man ever. I know what a commenter said above about women only but LEGIT he is THE best man ever on the planet.

I saved this for him and I to laugh over.

He would never tell me not to call someone out on their bullshit.

Find a therapist that works for you! Don’t settle because it’s who you told your journey to, or because that’s the closest therapist or that’s who your insurance wants you to see. FIND SOMEONE ELSE. [edit for typos]

Relationships / dating: learn who they really are their actions will show it. Decide if that meets your standards as communicating / couples therapy will not change you or a man. Does anyone know any couples that actually had real lasting success from couples counseling? I've only seen divorces from those couples.

After my last relationship, where my ex had a boatload of issues that made it extremely difficult for him to talk about his problems w/ anyone in life, not just me, someone told me hey you know, inability to communicate can be a dealbreaker. You don't have to give someone a chance on that. And it's like D U H, I felt so dumb for my low self esteem making me think I had to put up with that.

I wouldn't resort to childish talk like that. It won't improve a decent relationship and it sure as hell won't improve a shitty relationship. If the man can't talk to you with respect and clear communication, my view is that you should exit the situation once you've expressed your feelings and needs. If he can't put the pieces together in his mind by himself once I've explained and then left the situation, I won't push him or try to teach him or mother him. But I also won't call him a boy or get lame about it either. No time for that. If he sucks then I won't be hanging around having kiddy arguments with him.

I caught my ex in a lie, confronted him he turned it around on me being a drama queen. My therapist told me to confront him again ánd tell him that his reaction was not appropriate. Turns out he was cheating, the little white lie made him nervous about me finding out about the big lies. My therapist is the best ✌🏼

I don't agree with talking down to another adult just because they act stupid, but I've had so many people say "well have you talked about it?" "Have you tried communicating?" "Were you NICE about it when you were talking?" "Why can't you just ASK him to do the thing?"

Yes, we talked. Yes, I was polite because that's how I want to be treated. Yes, communication was used, as well as writing it out and making note reminders.

And why can't I ask? Because I did. I lost track of how many times I asked a grown man to be an adult and take care of himself, his home, and his child. How many more times do I have to basically beg another adult to act like a fucking adult?
