Funny how you could replace wife with mother and it would be the exact same.

So true. A wise therapist once said to me, to tell my partner at the time who was expecting too much of me in this way “I’m your lover, not your mother.” Men who have women that treat them like that often do end up resenting the woman and seeing her as their mother, and therefore reduced sexual attraction. That’s always stuck with me.

call me new fashioned! I take care of myself, cook healthy meals for myself, wash my own clothes, mostly make it to work on time (the commute from my bed to my home office can be brutal), and tidy as I go in my small, perfectly appointed apartment that is 100% to my own taste. That's just the kind of woman I am I guess!

Yess Queen <3
Old fashion - sacrificing your personal happiness for a man
New fashion - putting yourself first <3 Plenty of men hate the modern woman, because she finally started to love herself enough not to waste her time on their bullshit. Now they try along with pick me's to push this "new" trend of being the trad wife.

So a slave. She was raised to be a slave.
[–]myousernameRuthless Strategist105 points106 points107 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Right? Female socialization is basically grooming women to be sex slaves.
I remember seeing a post on GC a while back that went something like: "it's wholesome for a daughter to say that her father raised her like a son, they imagine all the cool experiences and opportunities that come with boyhood. But if a son says that his mother raised him like a daughter, it makes people super uncomfortable and feel bad for him, they imagine he was "forced" and otherwise abused"
[–]HaveNoIdeaWhatToPickFDS Newbie23 points24 points25 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
THIS. But none of them will have the courage to say out loud that they basically expect women take a role of a slave. They will try to sugar-coat it, put some pretty meaning on it.

Tough but fair.
So do any of the women who say these things even read back what they just said and realised that they ve basically just admitted to being brainwashed to be a man's unpaid servant. Like what is right with this situation ??? He is not a baby. There's caring and then there's mothering a newborn.
I think I said in another post some where that if men want to be treated like infants then us women shall make the grown up decisions in the world as in the relationships. And it shall be agreed once and for all that men are the weaker , protected sex.
Lmao they think they can brainwash us into babying them. They think they need us to survive.
[–]Ms_TillyRuthless Strategist55 points56 points57 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Is she doing all this while also working full time and doing the same things for children? That's where I get stuck. I didn't mind doing more around the house and cooking, when I couldn't work, but I still expected him to get his own damn self up for work and remember his own appointments. He wasn't allowed to make extra messes for me to clean up. And ultimately he was so helpless with basic life things and being a parent that I yeeted his ass. I'm much happier divorced.
[–]notbasic4karenFDS Newbie8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yeah the alarm clock and appointment thing baffles me. And not only do pickmes have to get him to appointments, they’re expected to call and make the appointments for their husband! I can barely manage my own calendar and my son (he’s 1 so we’ll cut him some slack) I’m sure as hell not managing a grown man’s.

Before my kid turned two, I told him I was done. He still gets on my nerves occasionally but at least I don't have to clean up after him or see his face everyday or god forbid sleep with his 60 second ass anymore. By the way, 60 seconds started AFTER the marriage. He just quit trying to impress me, even in bed. 🤢

[–]sbrooks0709FDS Newbie20 points21 points22 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I was raised by a woman who did all of this and even from a young age, it disgusted me that my stepdad couldn't boil water without nearly burning down the house (no joke) and she was in a "marriage" that was more like a roommate situation because he wanted to, and I quote, "get a divorce eventually in case her medical bills got too high so I wouldn't be held financially responsible".
So I found a man who, despite him being raised to expect this from a wife (and despite having a mother that expects me to continue raising the son she spoiled), knows that I will never be that woman. He helps me raise our kids, helps cook, is better at cleaning than I am, and covers his junk when he makes a "make me a sammich" joke because he knows that's where I'm going to hit him (not really, but I like that he flinches, lol).
Being "raised" a certain way doesn't mean you, as a grown-ass woman, have to behave that way. Time to evolve, ladies.

No lie, I was actually trained to be this way. Since I was a child (I'm talking at 7 years old, every week, scrubbing the bathrooms, kitchen, mopping the house, polishing wood and leather furniture, cleaning windows, vacuuming, not a dime in allowance), I was raised to clean up after my family, including my mother, brother who was older by 3 years, and father.
In my teens, a friend lived with us for about a month, and told me my family treated me "like a maid." I was so used to the treatment that at the time I was confused to hear that.
When I finally left at 21, I would go back to see them sometimes, and the house had become filthy. It only occurred to me then that I was the reason the entire house stayed clean at all, even though my parents gaslit me by always calling me "a pig" and blamed me for any little mess even though my brother would literally cook something, leave the countertop disgusting and grimey, leave his dirty plates and bowls everywhere, leave out all the ingredients, then they would rally together and collectively bully ME to clean it up because they wanted me to "stop fighting with everyone and just do it!"
They ended up paying a relative weekly to clean the house because three grown adults would rather live in filth than clean up after themselves.
They're all awful for many more reasons and I happily no longer talk to them.

The good thing about it is that at least now they are the ones living a miserable life, while you know how to take care of yourself. It still sickens me thought that they literally put the blame for their own laziness onto you.
[–]yggiwtmiihFDS Newbie9 points10 points11 points 6 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link
Thank you, I appreciate your sympathy. They're all delusional and narcissistic, so I would definitely say that their lives are miserable and unfulfilling.
And looking back, it was honestly a miserable life. I've never been a "housewife" but I definitely understand their grind. I was working a full time job and going to college full time while still cleaning up after everyone. It got to the point where I would purposely choose night classes just so I could have a late night schedule and not be pestered to do more than I was already doing.
I wish I could have been there to watch them try and push the housework on each other lol --they're all equally lazy and self serving so they must have been trying crazy jedi mind tricks on one another by the time I left.
I was a "good" and "nice" daughter --as long as I kept the house clean, took on all of the emotional and physical labor in each of our respective relationships, and didn't ask or expect anything from any of them, I was worthy of their mediocre, parasitic "love." Any sort of resistance or request for better treatment, I was a lazy, selfish, back-talking ingrate (and occasionally worse and more belittling words if I made them angry enough). All the "love" I ever got was transactional.
It makes sense now that narcissists were happy to date me and normal men would duck out because I was trained to give 110% in my relationships, so when a normal man was even slightly nice to me (which I hardly got growing up), I figured I should give 250% to "make up" for their showing me kindness. Any semi healthy person would see me as a stage 4 clinger and dip.
This ended up being a long post but I learned a little more about my family dynamic through this by writing it out, so thank you again.

I can definitely relate. I also had to be a second mom to my brother and thus, I don’t want any kids of my own. I hate kids now because I had to raise him. I still love him, but I wish he was never born. My family is very abusive and the culture is very toxic. I don’t think he’ll grow up to be a good man. When he was 2-3 years, it was the absolute worst. Shit on the walls, toys everywhere, crumbs everywhere, roaches bc I was the only one who really cleaned and they made messes ALL the time and I just couldn’t take care of 6 other people besides cooking, finances, being a “mom”, solving fights within the house (and there was at least 1 everyday), etc etc etc. My dad abused us sexually, physically & emotionally and my mom had SOOO many chances to leave, but she never did. I ran away once I heard they were trying to marry me off to this old ass guy in another state. Fuck them.

So many women have this shit programmed into them as the ideal. They sacrifice their own educations, desires, and opportunities only to be left behind with kids seven years in when dudechild wants some strange. Then they end up scraping by on low wage jobs as single moms. Then they find another scrote who helps pay the way but treats them like dirt.

[–]4E4MEFDS Apprentice6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I'd ask this woman who raised her to believe that these things indicate a good wife, her mother or her father? Her grandmother or her grandfather? Her pastor?
We have to remember that times are different and especially for older folks the women had less opportunities to support themselves, and both men and women were raised to believe that women had to do all of these things in order to survive. I doubt very many of those women would romanticize their experience like this, but we shouldn't shame them for getting by as best as they knew how.
Older folks need to recognize that women have been fighting for decades in order to have more choices rather than just being domestic servants, and they shouldn't shame us for wanting more.
When we know better we do better. We just have to keep lifting each other up.

I love telling this story of my great grandma. Like you said, it was a different time in which leaving your husband wasn’t something you did. But her husband had a drinking problem and was abusive so she packed her bags, and her two children and left him. She ended up being a homeowner and business owner running a boarding house where people would pay her to rent a room in her house for money.
I know her situation was unusual for her time, I just love telling that story.

[–]jeanneeebeanneeeFDS Apprentice3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Honestly, if this is the kind of wife you want to be, then go for it. But don't be shocked when your man does not reciprocate, and DEFINITELY don't be shocked when he disrespects you, cheats, or is otherwise worthless. Because when you do every menial little chore for your man, you're sending the message that his wants and needs are the only ones that matter. It becomes an expectation, not a blessing. He will feel entitled to it, not grateful.
This is the shit that leads to men divorcing their wives when they get sick or become otherwise unable to keep waiting on him hand and foot. So, good luck with all that.

This is the exact opposite of what my mom taught me. I remember two things she’s taught me, that she said her mother taught her: 1) find a man who loves you more than you love him, and 2) make sure he joyfully provides for you and happily gets up to go to work—don’t be with a lazy man you have to beg and plead to go to work.
My sister did not take this advice, and I see her busting her behind to provide for her family while her husband can’t keep a job for longer than two weeks and spends all her money on literal toys (comic books, action figures etc)

Omg! I just remembered that I dated a manboy that said he was the youngest son and used to being spoiled by his mom and sisters and he wanted a woman to "make his plate." So at the next "opportunity" he looked at me and then he looked at the plate, and then he looked at me and then he looked at the plate...
... it went on until I walked out of the room.
I also remember that he invited me to dinner (split bill because I offered - he knew I always offered and he always took the offer) and afterwards he drove us to his place, turned on basketball, turned off the lights, and went to asleep. I got up and left. He ran after and wondered what was wrong and I explained that my Saturdays do not end at 9 pm. I got in my car and left. He kept calling and calling. I picked up when I got home and after making poor excuses he said "FINE, we do what YOU want to do."
Oh, now's the time to give a shit about what I want? I ended it there.

Reminds me of my cousin who was raised the same way. From a very very young age, she used to constantly fantasise about her future husband and children. Cooking for them, and cleaning up after them.
I remember this one instance where she (then 17f) made lunch, and my aunt complimented her saying her by saying that her future husband is a very lucky man.
