MSM claims that it is toxic masculinity that drives men to suicide, in other words, the stereotypical old stoic macho strong quiet traditional misogynist homophobic man is the most likely to commit suicide because his pride is preventing him from seeking help.

Now, does the description "stereotypical old stoic macho strong quiet traditional misogynist homophobic man" apply to Bourdain?

[–]ToplessNedFlanders 66 points67 points68 points 8 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

“His pride is preventing him from getting help” - what the fuck. (I agree with the op)

It is certainly not helpful to assume a man is a bigot just because he’s a man and seeks help.

You wanna know what’s driven me to think about suicide? Not feeling man enough. Being codependent. Watching a wife die of cancer. Watching a 2nd wife drink too much. Not being able to save the few people I had actively tried to save (that weren’t already dead) on firefighter calls. Worry that I’m always going to be stressed, slightly overweight and all of the standard 40 year old guy things.

I don’t ever worry that pride in my bigotry is preventing me from getting help.

Way to make it about yourselves, MSM.

I'm terribly sorry about your wife.

You have my sympathies as well. T-shirt cannons are no joke.

(joking aside, what you endured really must have been hard, man)

[–]ToplessNedFlanders 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

OMG. I didn’t even make that connection. Ha! This comment made my day!

[–]MealReadytoEat_ 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I still don't get it, can you help me?

[–]ToplessNedFlanders 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Flanders (in my username) is a character on The Simpsons. His wife died due to being hit with a t shirt cannon and was knocked off the bleachers at a monster truck show. (I think that’s what the show was..)

[–]NeilPeartReddit 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

That's a lot to deal with...karmas gotta come around at some point.

[–]Taxus_Calyx -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

But suicide is not Karma coming around, it’s throwing out more.

[–]NeilPeartReddit 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Ok....I was saying they had a lot of tragedy and stress so there should be good karma coming eventually. Not sure why you interpreted it as suicide is good karma?

[–]Taxus_Calyx 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh I see. I misunderstood.

[–]reverblueflame 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You have seen some terrible things, that's a lot to face.

The first thing you said was not feeling man enough. what does that mean to you?

[–]ToplessNedFlanders 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Well it doesn’t help that when my wife is far too drunk and I make the mistake of staying home instead of working late or visiting the firehouse ... she says such mean things. But that’s someone else’s opinion and just indicative of other issues.

What “man enough” means to me, I guess if it’s not a generic goto statement that I’ve felt I held onto my life - it’s that I should be able to provide and ensure those who need me are happy. That I should be physically fit, especially to do work that involves saving folks (I’m fit for duty..) and I should be able to keep myself rooted and ignore the inner turmoil enough to not let it show to those around me.

That I should be centered in my own thoughts and needs that I can feel like I can attack a day with grace and humility and laughter and sunlight instead of constantly feeling crushed and dark and like I stare at the ground more than I look up at the sun.

I appreciate your reply. Thank you.

[–]reverblueflame 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

if I may, I'd like to argue that you are holding toxic masculinity to yourself in the same way perhaps that Bourdain did.

If I had to guess, both you and Bourdain hold huge depths of love, generosity, humility, joy, kindness, and so much more. On top of that though you measure yourself against an impossible ideal that is centered around toxic masculinity - namely that weakness is bad for men. That you always have to be in control and in charge, not to hurt or control others but to maintain order, pay the bills, etc.

More than anything you deserve to look inside yourself and feel joy at what a wonderful generous caring person you are, and feel hope for the future that everything will be ok even if you make mistakes, especially if you are weak too sometimes. We will love you for who you really are.

That is what I believe toxic masculinity is taking from us. Not that we are threatening others, abusing women, and wielding privilege like a weapon, rather more insidious - our beliefs about who we are allowed to be at our best, but especially at our worst.

[–]ToplessNedFlanders 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You made my day with this reply. I truly and greatly appreciate it. Thank you. Really.

[–]Mode1961 219 points220 points221 points 8 years ago (30 children) | Copy Link

If it were women who were roughly 75% of those committing suicide, this would have been deemed a national crisis with Federal, State(Provincial) and Municipal Governments rolling out multiple programs to combat that problem and the MSM would have a telethon every other night along with every single talk show having a special guest to talk about it every single episode but for men "Nah, it's just toxic masculinity and it is there own fault"

[–]Remerez 26 points27 points28 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This! I have been taught to act toxic more from women and my work than from other men hands down. Almost every girlfriend I had enforced a be macho and take what you want or be disposable and get nothing attitude.

Thanks, I appreciate that :)

[–]elebrin 16 points17 points18 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I don't think it's just culture, though. I think it is a ubiquitous reality for humanity that it's important that there are men, but that they are interchangeable and easily replaced.

What is a standard male goal? Find a way to make yourself important and irreplaceable. Do something noteworthy. Build a legacy for people to remember you by.

[+]MotherFuckin-Oedipus1 points 8 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Find a way to make yourself important and irreplaceable. Do something noteworthy. Build a legacy for people to remember you by.

You say that, but I'm sitting here at work on Reddit all day. Does karma count as a legacy?

[–]elebrin 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I guess what I'm saying is that's what men seem to want. That's how I define myself... I want to matter, to someone, or something, and while I don't care if I'm remembered personally, I want something I did to be remembered and last after I'm gone.

It gets at the heart of what men have to do: we have to find a place for ourselves where we are wanted and needed. We fundamentally have to justify our continued existence. If you are just as good as the next guy, well, the next guy can push you into the wood chipper and take your place and nothing changes. If you can do things that the next guy can't do, or if someone in particular cares about you, then that can't happen.

[–]HiredMind 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's in our genes too. We need to change our culture then use it to overcome our genes.

[+]Firtox1 points 8 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Biology>Culture>Ideaology

You'll likely need genetic engineering for that.

[–]HiredMind 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

On a permanent basis either that or evolution, yes. But on a temporary basis, the mind can override the genes.

e.g. If our genes instill in us a fear of spiders, a rational person can overcome that fear and handle a spider.

[–]Baberaham_Lincoln666 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not to the women who love them, they aren't.

[–]Junkbunkfunk -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

It's not culture, it's biology. A womb is far more valuable than a sperm

[+]infiniteslinky1 points 8 years ago* [recovered] (8 children) | Copy Link

Oh fucking please.

[–]Junkbunkfunk 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

But it's literally the truth. Eggs and wombs are a scarce resource. They need to be protected more if the species is to survive. One man can impregnate 15 women and have 15 kids, but if 15 men impregnate one woman you still just get one kid. Sorry that nature isn't equal

[–]weeglos 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

This is also historically why women are seen as more valuable in civilizations. Why 'women and children first!', why women aren't allowed in dangerous jobs or places, and why men are more likely to die young.

This fact of biology is why there is a societal difference between men and women, and women feminists hate it.

[–]Baberaham_Lincoln666 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

u/Junkbunkfunk is right. What would happen if the apocalypse came, leaving only one woman and a thousand men? How long would it take to rebuild civilization?

Now consider how long that same task would take one man in the company of a thousand women. There is no comparison.

But men are by no means expendable; after all, the ability of women to bear children is only useful so long as there are men around to impregnate them.

But this has nothing to do with whether or not someone (man or woman) is worthy of love. Because we all deserve to be respected insofar as we can respect others.

[–]infiniteslinky 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Men are 5 minutes away from the artificial womb. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dt7twXzNEsQ Fuck off.

[–]Baberaham_Lincoln666 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That was really cool, I'm looking forward to when this technology is used to help premies finish developing, b/c that's a huge problem.

In my comment, I said that among the functions of women is the very important one of bearing children. However, this is by no means their only value to society. Even if babies are conceived in petri dishes and grown in artificial wombs (farther off than 5 minutes, but closer than we think for sure), women will not become obsolete due to their aptitude for things like caring for children and being companions for men.

I'm not trying to be a dick. Just stating facts, man.

[–]Baberaham_Lincoln666 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Is that what a 'companion' is? I think not, and I think most men would agree.

Real pussy is better, and you can't have a meaningful conversation with your sex doll.

Your sex doll is no better than a goldfish -- she's an inferior pet who doesn't give a fuck about you.

But you do you.

Please what?

[–]Baberaham_Lincoln666 13 points14 points15 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Hasn't suicide always been largely a male problem? Sure, women may make more attempts, but men are more likely to complete their suicides. This has almost always been the case, and anyone who's familiar with suicide stats should know this.

The real problem is that this phenomenon has increased so dramatically in recent years; I blame the economy and the way that the internet has shrunk the world, allowing us to retreat even further into ourselves. Men may have borne the brunt of these changes more heavily than women given their designation in society as wage-earners (which isn't to say that women can't fall into that category, but rather they're likely to depend on their partner's paychecks during the period following childbirth). But no one, regardless of gender, is immune to the thoughts and feelings that can lead one to suicide.

A man and a woman killed themselves this week. And look who got more press -- it was Bourdain. And I don't think it was just because he came second. He had an incredible life, and his work touched a lot of people. The issue of the coddling of women doesn't apply here, or we would have seen far more florid outpourings of grief over Kate's death. And we didn't.

I'm not saying that women aren't coddled. They are. Young, attractive women are granted society's protection due to their fertility, but that is as far as it goes -- and anyone who says otherwise is playing the victim.

[–]Mode1961 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I agree with most of what you said except the part about Bourdain getting more coverage. I say that fashion lady talked about on most news channels, and even most of the daily talk shows. It was all over Facebook and even on Youtube.

[–]Baberaham_Lincoln666 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Thanks for pointing that out. I think I should've emphasized the quality of the coverage and the things on which the writers chose to focus. At least from what I read, there were some really touching articles about Bourdain's work, which might be explained by his activity as a host on a show broadcasted by CNN.

Although it's more likely that I read further into news on Bourdain's death because I was more interested in his work than the work of Kate Spade. Sorry about that.

[–]Mode1961 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No need to be sorry.

Personally, I have never heard of Kate Spade until this week. Mr Bourdain, I did know about.

[–]cacamalaca 15 points16 points17 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

because his pride is preventing him from seeking help.

Pride or the $150/hr cost to see a therapist

[–]TokyoIsMyCity 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

At least Bourdain could have afforded that easily.

[+]MotherFuckin-Oedipus1 points 8 years ago* [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

[–]opalescex 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

not at all that's pretty expensive

[–]Hoodwink 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

$150

You know a lot of male suicide comes from money problems or a derivative of money problems (like not affording healthcare treatment or loss of jobs->wife->family or drug problems which are often linked to poverty).

It's not mental health issues purely. Hell, I'd say most 'depression' problems come from the fact that most of the friends and family treat the person like shit or some real problems in your life you can't fix easily (like social skills because a lot of it comes from childhood-to-young adult rearing).

[–]superhobo666 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If talking about our problems solved them there wouldn't even be a therapy industry in the first place.

[–]Seventytvvo 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]mcavvacm 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]J03SChm03OG 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Of course not that man doesn't exist.

[–]TwoTonJoe 183 points184 points185 points 8 years ago (23 children) | Copy Link

"Just get help" they say.

It's 100% not that easy, nor is it cost effective, and that's a real tragedy. I struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts for many years, but I was a single father with sole custody of two children and for me, getting help would have resulted in exposure that I wasn't ready for.

My fear was that if I was honest with an analyst, they'd see me as a risk and then I'd potentially have my kids taken from me while I was placed in some sort of clinic. I went to a couple of counseling sessions which had a LOT of questions I didn't want to answer honestly (do you have guns/weapons in the home, do you self-medicate, etc), and it was costing me $40 a visit even with my insurance, and they didn't have office hours outside of my work schedule (I'd lose work time with each session), so there were few reasons for me to continue.

I'm fortunate enough to have made it through the worst of it. Many aren't. This is a very real problem in America, even moreso for men, and it's got to be addressed seriously.

[–]LaBellaVita89 32 points33 points34 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Your comment really high lights some of the problems with our health care system especially when it comes to mental health. Sadly, your experience is likely a common one. Ughhh. Glad you made it through. Thank you for sharing your story.

Hijacking this comment to correct some misbeliefs.

As a training psychologist, the only time I would commit someone is if they said to me "When I leave this office I am going to kill myself and this is how I'm going to do it."

We cant help you unless youre being honest with us.

[+]MotherFuckin-Oedipus1 points 8 years ago* [recovered] (4 children) | Copy Link

I was suicidal for two years as well, though I suppose I'm lucky it was when I was in high school, so I didn't share any familial obligations.

However, I faced some similar issues. My private high school had sent me home, instructing me not to return to campus until a shrink passed me as someone who wasn't going to hurt himself. Sounds appropriate on paper, but I would have been expelled for missing classes, as any absences were not excused. This only encouraged me to lie my way out of the three tests I was given to establish a baseline for my mental health.

I also didn't want to be placed into any kind of protective care as a result.

There are some tangible negative consequences of seeking out help. In hindsight, I do wish I had done it anyway; what I faced wasn't nearly as bad as losing custody of offspring. Considering how close I came, on several occasions, to being listed in the obituaries, it would have been a much safer move.

....Still, we shouldn't have to make decisions like that.

[–]TwoTonJoe 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's such a catch-22, isn't it? Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

How are you doing now?

[+]MotherFuckin-Oedipus1 points 8 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

It's been over a decade since that dark time. I never sought help and kept everything relatively well-hidden. People knew I was depressed, but they didn't know how badly or what to do about it. I've just recently started opening up to people, including my dad, who until a month ago had no idea I wanted to die back then. I have to educate people on how to respond, and raising awareness about this stuff is important to me now.

After visiting a Zen Buddhist temple for a school project, I learned to meditate, and doing so helped me keep it mostly manageable. I'm convinced it saved my life.

Life these days, overall, is generally good. Happy marriage, and both of us are software engineers, so we don't have financial woes. I travel regularly, for work and pleasure, and I'm a pretty easy-going guy.

It feels as though that suicidal period left some very real scars, though. If one of my friends, or even my wife, is struggling with stress, part of me remembers what I dealt with, and it makes it difficult or impossible for me to comfort anyone. Kind of a big "so what?" attitude that I internalize. I'm also not very emotive; I may be happy or ecstatic about something, but to everyone except my wife, I have about as much visible emotion as a plank of wood. My friends harangue me saying that I treated our wedding like a poker game, and if you see the video footage, I don't so much as smile while standing in front of everyone with my wife next to me.

The flip side of this is that, after healing (for the most part) from it, stress and anxiety are almost entirely foreign concepts to me now.

I had a break down after my separation and loosing access to my son. I had just got a new job after loosing my pretty cushy IT job. I even had a lawyer provided for me from my boss. Anyway, after getting fired for performance, I got a shitty job at Lowes. Wasn't much, but I was working. One night after tooany drinks, I had a break down and had an ambulance called. My friend told them I was suicidal. I was, but I didn't tell anyone I was. This led to a three day stay at a facility. They didn't care that I just got a job and was scheduled to work those three days. They didn't care that I was telling them I wasn't suicidal. They even threatened me to more time when I got frustrated.

It was bullshit. I was lucky enough to have a caring HR lady who excused my absence. The same woman who got me out of a fake sexual harassment charge too. It's not easy to ask for help anymore.

2nd degree manslaughter, which was a plea-down from a murder charge.

Yeah, one of those "Who the fuck did I marry?!" scenarios.

[+]MotherFuckin-Oedipus1 points 8 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

My father won custody without a murder charge against my mother. It just took him 15 years and nearly a cool million in attorney's fees to do it.

...Why it was so hard for a judge to award custody to a successful attorney over a high-school dropout woman who couldn't hold a job as a waitress is pretty sad.

Yes = receive treatment for that specific thing and forfeit any pain medication or potentially addictive drug that could drastically improve your quality of life in perpetuity

Similar boat for a lot of men, suicidal thoughts have repercussions.

A lot of my buddies have had trouble in the past, although I’ve done my best to be there for them. If they report their issues, they will get help (keyword for disciplinary/corrective action), and for that they will lose their job, which deters a lot of us from seeking help in a high stress job.

[–]forzion_no_mouse 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not to mention the people who will lose their jobs. If you have a security clearance you are just asking to lose it and then your job.

[–]EyeofAgamotto126 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I’d recommend to any dudes out there who are Christian to seek out help within their church. A lot churches employ “care pastors” who function a lot like counselors, are more likely to respect you as a man, and not necessarily constrained by a bunch of BS liberal reporting requirements. They’re also more likely to be guys, which is who guys should be talking to for support, not women.

[–]TwoTonJoe 18 points19 points20 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

In theory, I agree with you. In practice, that avenue didn't work for me. I was told to "pray harder", and "what do you have to be depressed about when God loves you so much?"

Granted, these were my experiences as a believer, and hopefully the exception to the rule. Normally, I encourage faith-based counseling over secular.

[–]MotherFuckin-Oedipus10 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I was never religious, but when I was suicidal, I sought help from religious leaders too. I was greeted with very similar advice. I found it in bad taste, and borderline offensive.

I found my "salvation" in atheistic Zen Buddhism and meditation. It didn't get rid of the suicidal depression, but definitely helped me manage it. I recommend trying it for anyone out there looking for anything to help.

[–]EyeofAgamotto126 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

I’m sorry you had that experience. Secular or faith based it all depends on who you get. There are lazy turds in every profession and it’s very obvious you got one. I think the vast majority are smart, caring people ready and willing to go deeper to get to the heart of the matter and really help.

[–]TwoTonJoe 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

By hanging? That's not a great way to go.

[–][deleted] 46 points47 points48 points 8 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I hate writing about this type of topic because I don't want this to be misconstrued as saying that suicide is in any way painless or peaceful when done right, but proper hanging is about as easy as it gets. If you drop from a high enough height you will severe the connection between your brain and spinal cord instantly, pass out, and then die from asphyxiation without feeling any pain.

It's kind of an old fashioned manner of execution now, but it's one of the least painful.

[–]AndyBreal 28 points29 points30 points 8 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

I recently read an article about the hangings they did after the Nuremberg trials after WW2. They were meticulous about using the the right height of drop per the table and there were still many whose necks did not break and struggled for a long time. One was over 10 minutes.

[–]MotherFuckin-Oedipus13 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

At least with some other methods, too, if you decide you want to live mid-execution, it's easier to get out of the situation.

[–]WimpyJeeper 11 points12 points13 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Considering who was being hanged, there is a real possibility of a “aww, real sorry bout that... promise to do better next time” situation.

[–]AndyBreal 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You would think that but you have to remember that the people viewing the executions weren’t the sadists that those being executed were. They talked about how many of them had a hard time watching and were traumatized by it.

[+]MotherFuckin-Oedipus1 points 8 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't know, man. When I was suicidal, hanging was not a very good option to my unwell brain. It's pretty hard to get the appropriate drop distance indoors, for example.

I do not advocate suicide; these were my two plans that I nearly executed when I was ill, though:

  • Floor a car off of a cliff without a seatbelt. Even if I had survived the initial impact, there was a 0% chance of being conscious while I bled out.
  • Shotgun blast right between the eyes. So long as you don't flinch, this is practically guaranteed instant death. If you do survive, though, life is probably pretty shitty.

Again, nobody should be killing themselves. I'm glad I didn't. But the odds of fucking something up hanging oneself are greater than other methods.

[–]chaveznieves 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you watched his shows, he alludes to the fact that he had some serious things go wrong and was at some very low lows in the passed. I think the one where he goes up river in Borneo.

Plus you could sort of tell he was depressed if you know what to look for. He never had a real large range of emotion, just kind of a flat emotional delivery even of things he supposedly liked.

[–]chocoboat 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't know... that never struck me as depression. That can just come with age and maturity, you can really enjoy something without getting an excited-little-kid expression on your face, and you can hate something and just try to calmly let it slide and move on.

And he would get genuinely excited once about something interesting to see or good to eat once in a while, it just wasn't common. I never got that "dead inside" feeling from him, he was just mature enough to not care about some of the flashy stuff that other people find fun and exciting.

[–]Taxus_Calyx 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Good observation. Could he have been covering up emotions that were there all along to satisfy expectations placed on him to be stoic and immovable?

CNN remembers him kindly, but no mention exactly why he took his life. At the end of the article, CNN avoids the real problem of male suicide and offers only this general problem:

Suicide is a growing problem in the United States. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a survey Thursday showing suicide rates increased by 25% across the United States over nearly two decades ending in 2016. Twenty-five states experienced a rise in suicides by more than 30%, the government report finds.

Yes.

For years

He was very open about it.

[–]chocoboat 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Can you show me an example of it? This is the first I've heard.

I know that he has a dark sense of humor and sometimes jokes around with a "we're all gonna die in the end so none of this matters" kind of attitude, but I would hardly say that anyone who makes an occasional comment like that is depressed and considering suicide.

He was a drug abuser for many years but stopped when he became famous, which was quite a while ago at this point. He seemed to be enjoying his life and doing what he loves, travelling and eating at the best places in the world, and being paid to do it.

An article published today talks about him mentioning depression in a 2016 episode of Parts Unknown where he talks about a bad burger making him feel terrible for days, but it's hard to tell how serious he's being with stuff like that.

[–]mr_j_12 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The we're all going to die but doesn't necessarily mean he's depressed or suicidal. I make comments like that occasionally and don't mean anything by it.

Lost everything I ever worked for thanks Clinton /Bush /Obama’s bankster buddies in the housing theft . After 47 years of hard physical labor I get fucked in the ass by my own country .

I am almost 60. I know what you're talking about in terms of the economy. I don't have special needs children. But I am very much with you, and for that reason need to say that I hope you will keep on going - not because you and I are being screwed, but because we are better than those who screw and scorn men.

[–]MakeTotalDestr0i 13 points14 points15 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

His realist look at the arbitrary harshness of life and his narrative was one of trying to find a balance of brightness to offset what seemed to be the inevitable triumph of decay and misery. He explored trying to harvest light and meaning from everyday experience only to succumb to the mental entropy met by anyone who is deeply introspective and plagued by foresight to see their own future misery reflected back to them by the misery of good people in the world.

I could probably think about this more and write about it but don't have time right now.

The same type of dark cloud hangs over many comedians who try to harvest the light through the laughter for each brief moment but the clouds always encroach

Yeah, I saw it too, and could even hear it in his voice and the way he composed himself or the words he chose. He wasn't a happy man. There are quite a few quotes of him talking openly about his internal struggle and battle with drugs. The problem is while it may be apparent to a professional or an observant eye, nothing can be done in this society if the individual doesn't reach out.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I’ll start. 60 something year old with an identity crisis (wearing flashy clothing, trendy). A need to escape and get away rather than confront his underlying issues/roots. Extremism. Dismissal of religion/hedonism. Last one I notice is the need to be seen, heard, or seeking attention for self-fulfillment and acceptance (tv show, popularity, etc). Edit: also kind of a loner- or a lost wanderer by himself.

Am in the only one who can't fathom why someone in his position, and with his wealth would kill himself?

[–]Travis_McGee 33 points34 points35 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

No, and that's part of the problem. These men often don't feel capable of openly expressing their inner turmoil because there's an uninformed audience out there ready to say exactly what you're saying here. "Why do you feel that way when you have everything?" He doesn't have everything. He didn't have what mattered to him.

The growing societal disconnect between human conditions (depression, divorce, w/e) that drive people to permanent action and their avenues for treatment (counseling, retirement, stability, a break) is only going to get worse. People don't want to hear or see that you're suffering, so you hide it til you can't anymore.

If you want to make a simple and deep impact in this world, open your heart up to other humans and get real with them. I know, in my case, being able to talk openly about my issues without judgement or worry would take so much of the weight off, even if just for a moment. The biggest thing you can do is recognize, "it doesn't have to make sense to me." Their pain and suffering is only ever going to be something that they experience, and you probably won't ever understand it. But, at least you can listen to them, and more often than not, that's all they need.

[–]Mild111 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is the biggest thing to me.

All of the talk after Kurt Cobain ("It was becoming too famous too fast")

That seemed too simple of an answer to me. Like celebrity culture was using that as a front to preserve some sense of legitimacy, because nobody famous could legitimately be unhappy, right?

Then I'm reminded of Dave Chapelle and his sudden departure and trip to Africa.

I'm not saying that there are perfect pictures of mental health amongst the 'common folk', but there's a sense of when you're poor, you do things to adjust. Now take someone used to doing that adjusting internally and thrust them into a community where they have handlers and hangers-on willing to deliver any drug. A community where every comment made to you could be sucking up veiled in the guise of a friendship.

I'm sure there were several people who presented their selves as a friend to Anthony Bourdain, but how do you know who your true friends are?

You take any one of us whose life is dedicated to using all of our emotional energy to maintain friendships and gather resources and thrust us into a world where people clamor to take pictures with us and answer to our demands, and what is left to do with that mental energy?

That feels, to me, like the loneliest life I can imagine. My loneliest times, personally, are when I've lost friends over financial and social imbalances. I've had close friends hooked on hard drugs, become homeless, and get aggressive when I wouldn't 'give them a handout'. I've had close friends who achieved a bit of minor internet celebrity status and money and turn their back on those who did the work to get them there.

I can only imagine how one's support structure is thrown into chaos after becoming a celebrity.

You turn on your local syndication TV channel during the day, and you'll get a steady dose of the TMZ/Wendy Williams/The View bullshit overanalyzing every fucking action celebrities take. We fucking worship chaos in this culture. And then we then act all shocked when a seemingly-polite man hangs himself in a hotel room, or horrified when a dejected teenager brings a rifle to his school and starts blowing away the shallow "cool kids". (And then we act like we wonder why it happens again and again)

Trying to make men grow vaginas will not reverse the suicide trend. Men are not defective women. Men need a purpose, not airing their feelings.

[–]Travis_McGee 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I agree that men are lacking purpose in today's society, but, being able to discus feelings is important regardless of gender. Your response here is exactly the type of (dare I say) toxic masculinity that keeps other men from opening up and keeps these events strictly in the "surprise" category.

Until men can express themselves and find a way to talk about what's hurting, they will continue to "unexpectedly" drop out of the game.

[–]PenPaperPencil 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

the guy you're responding to is a tradcon who supports the draft, he doesnt support mens rights. He wants men to be forced into gender roles to 'give them purpose'.

[–]xNOM -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

being able to discus feelings is important regardless of gender

And men do not "express their feelings" by talking to people. This is what women do. Most men and boys simply find it a waste of time. Men are not defective women. Stop spreading this crap toxic femininity. It's not some "evil social gender norm" that keeps men from crying their eyes out as often as women do. It's universal. It's masculinity. It has a basis in biology.

In countries and places where people recognize that men are not defective women, they take a completely different approach:

[–]PenPaperPencil -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]vonthe 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, I'd say you weren't the only one.

If you haven't felt the blackness that can overtake you, you won't understand how powerful it is, and that it has nothing to do with who you are, where you live, what kind of car you drive, who makes your shoes... it has everything to do with YOU, the person living inside the meat machine you walk around in, and how you deal with the world outside. Depression throws a massive black filter between the inside of your head and the entire rest of the world, so that absolutely everything is distorted and flattened and smothered in pain.

If you haven't felt it, I can see how you would not be able to understand it.

[–]Vandechoz 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Despite wealth and social standing, we all have the same problems.

That doesn't make any sense because the most common problems people have are caused by or related to a lack of money.

[–]grandmasbroach 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Plenty of studies have shown that once you make enough to basically keep your bills paid and have a place to live. More money doesn't make you happy. In fact, many times when a person gets money, and then loses it, they are more depressed than before they ever had money. I believe the studies I saw put the number at about 50-70k a year. After that, more money won't do much for you in the way of adding happiness.

I believe, and Jordan peterson talks about this at great length. Happiness is really something to strive for. It is a shallow end goal for life. What you should be looking for is meaning and usefulness in life. Whether that be through family, friends, career, etc. Meaning is far more important than happiness.

[–]Vandechoz 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, but most people in the world do not make 50-70k a year. In general, most people's problems are either directly wealth-related problems, or could be solved by enough wealth. Again, most. Just because money doesn't fix literally everything doesn't mean it won't fix almost anything.

[–]MotherFuckin-Oedipus2 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I stopped mentioning it in general on Reddit, but I can speak to this personally. I made some stupid drunken decisions with my money but got lucky, and now I'm sitting on more wealth than a vast majority of the country.

I have seen my portfolio dip in six figures on bad market days. I haven't so much as looked at a price tag in years, but on those bad days, anxiety and anger come in full force. There are days when it goes up as much, too, but the positive feeling it generates is far less intense.

There are other things, too, that can only happen if you have money. We're raised to think that wealth cures all - that's a big part of the American Dream - but in reality, our lizard brains lose sight of "the important stuff" and focus on other things to be anxious about.

Yes, being poor is objectively worse for your health, but there's a point at which wealth is a mental health risk factor.

[+]ambitious_flosser1 points 8 years ago* [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

Sure it does, because some people believe wealth cures most ills. Suggesting that most problems revolve around money is a generalization, and ambitious at best. I doubt Bourdain or Spade killed themselves over money.

[–]Vandechoz 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

wealth does cure most ills, and most problems do revolve around money

sure those two specific people didn't fix their issues with wealth, but they're not exactly a majority of people; and we don't even know how much of an attempt they even made to use the wealth they had to solve their problems

[–]EarlButAGirl 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Money can't solve problems it didn't create. I have plenty of money, but the person I put above all else committed suicide 12 years ago. I'd give every last cent and thing I own up if I could have him back. None of this shit I have acquired means anything outside of "I threw myself into a line of work that pays well and takes up all my time because the longer I'm occupied, the less I remember how fucking miserable I am." Every. Fucking. Day. since he died, I wish the world would swallow me up. I sabotage relationships, I'm distant with my family, and I never had kids because I realized that I don't want ties to this earth when I inevitably give up sooner rather than later. Money is shit. If you can't be happy without money, you won't be happy with it either. Trust me.

[–]anxious_ibex 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"The so-called ‘psychotically depressed’ person who tries to kill herself doesn’t do so out of quote ‘hopelessness’ or any abstract conviction that life’s assets and debits do not square. And surely not because death seems suddenly appealing. The person in whom Its invisible agony reaches a certain unendurable level will kill herself the same way a trapped person will eventually jump from the window of a burning high-rise. Make no mistake about people who leap from burning windows. Their terror of falling from a great height is still just as great as it would be for you or me standing speculatively at the same window just checking out the view; i.e. the fear of falling remains a constant. The variable here is the other terror, the fire’s flames: when the flames get close enough, falling to death becomes the slightly less terrible of two terrors. It’s not desiring the fall; it’s terror of the flames. And yet nobody down on the sidewalk, looking up and yelling ‘Don’t!’ and ‘Hang on!’, can understand the jump. Not really. You’d have to have personally been trapped and felt flames to really understand a terror way beyond falling."

Our leadership needs to wake up to this, but I have a hunch this is either exactly what they want or is a byproduct they're willing to live with to achieve other political and economic means and have no intentions of making moves to change. This could easily be me or you, however I for one am determined to not off myself in hopes of seeing a day worth fighting to overturn this horseshit.

There's a whole world of people, cities, wildlife, food, and wonders out there beyond my little town. I loved watching it, and I really liked him because he wasn't glossy and fake happy all the time, but seemed kind of tore up, pissed off, and generally damaged, which I identified with a lot more than I would have liked to. I also struggle with wanting to kill myself, a lot, and it's really sad he finally lost that struggle after all these years. I usually never care about celebrity deaths, but this one hurts.

The majority of people dead from suicide are men.

No one is taking a really close look at this issue. You know, something beyond the "Suicide is a problem. Please seek help."

Many men's issues are tied to suicide. Issues that still have a ways to go before they're heard.
