This probably won’t go down well, but I think the important bit here is that if someone was breaking into your house at night, the assumption is that it is a man. So the man from the household is the best person to risk an altercation.

I would be interested to see how the ‘protector’ role would change (if at all) if men and women were perpetrating crimes equally.

Listen if I hear a noise in the house I can totally go check it out myself. That said I recognize I am a liability. I am not the best suited for this role. I am a tiny, fragile person(medically).

While on a whole I am an egalitarian, I also recognize that for some things one or the other is just biologically better.

I don’t wake my husband up because his life matters less than mine. I wake him up because I’m this altercation he is more likely to make sure we both come out of this alive.

Oh geez. I have done the same thing when I heard a crash from the living room late at night. But my husband is a lot bigger than me. And I think he likes being the big, protective one. I don't know. Male disposability is a big issue, but men and women are different. This seems more like just the man being the man in the relationship. Both genders need to treat each other with respect and dignity, but at the end of the day, men and women are not the same and I don't think it goes well when we try to pretend we are.

Should be both going to investigate the noise together, unless they have kids. Then whoever is physically stronger (usually the man in a hetero marriage) should go to defend the children while the one who is weaker goes to investigate alone. My partner is bigger and stronger than I am, and has higher earning potential. In the future when we have kids, we've agreed that of we ever find ourselves in a dangerous situation we might not make it out of together, he gets taken care of first after the kids as he can better defend and provide for them. The only exception to that rule will be when I'm pregnant or breastfeeding. He doesn't like it as he's pretty traditional, but he can't argue with the logic.

Because men are born with free muscle and on average, grow taller than women. If the average woman goes downstairs to have a showdown with an average man, based on muscle mass, reach, and height differences, she's vastly more likely to lose.

I usually go to check, trying to get my SO awake is impossible at night and the intruder would be alerted. I'm also lighter on my feet and have quite a few different self defense classes and martial arts under my belt. Though my husband is more adept to like street fighting. I also figure I should be the first line of defence because if the first line of defense goes down and it was the opposite I'd be to worried about the kids and wouldn't be able to think clearly tbh. With my DH with the kids it makes it easier for me to focus and keep a cool head.

Yeah Normally, most days I say the same thing. However, In practice I am usually up in half a second darting to the noise. I am faster than my wife as far as reaction speed and just act on that. I've put myself in potential harm more times than I care to admit. I've been lucky. So far it's just been a cat that snuck in a window by ripping the screen, a family friend that lost a ton of weight and I didnt recognize, and my own cat being a douche bag more times than he should be allowed.

Agian, I've been lucky.

It just seems to be the way I am hardwired.

I should also mention, I usually ball like a baby and shake uncontrollably about 5 minutes or so after my adrenaline comes down. Anyone else have something like that

No, it's just the fact that men are on average stronger than women. And if you're the husband, chances are you're stronger and more capable than your spouse. There's a reason men have always waged war while the women stay on the sidelines. And this comment isn't to shame or discriminate against anyone, I'm simply saying that the stronger partner has the duty to protect the weaker SO in any way they can, and vice versa.
