Unfortunately, the laws in this country have never been over-hauled to match the changing philosophies and living standards of the real people.

The laws still reek of "1950's mentality", while the real world has changed dramatically.

Child support, child custody, divorce, and even partnership laws have never been changed. These laws were created back when women stayed at home taking care of kids, or because of mothers having to file for divorce because of abusive fathers, and stuff like that.

Women are in the workforce, and can make as much or more money than a man. Women hold positions of power. Women and mothers have multitudes of options for everything nowadays, and aren't restricted to the "pregnant and barefoot" mentality of back then.

The laws need to be overhauled and changed to reflect that there ARE single fathers out there, abusive mothers, and childrens rights.

Having a kid doesn't happen with only ONE person involved, it's a decision that BOTH make. And it's unfair to dump ALL the financial responsibility onto the father, when the woman probably talked the man into getting her pregnant in the first place.

Talk about sexist and prejudiced laws!!!

Of course you'll have no money left to feed yourself, develop future romantic relationships, put away for retirement, invest in a home, or raise yourself to the financial security needed to justify obtaining custody but that's the way the evil patriarchy crumbles I guess. Should have thought about that before you did something so selfish as join the service and fight for your country.

My son has a has a similar story but served 2 tours and came home injured. Most of his VA goes to child support but Zero ability to see his kids.

Unpopular opinion. Just because you served in the military doesn't make you fit to have custody of children. When my dad got back from his tours it took him a long time to adjust back to normalcy and that was very hard for ALL of us. This picture tells 1 side of a very layered situation. Military service does not entitle someone to custody, regardless of rank or medals earned and should have ZERO weight behind these issues.

I'm not saying this doesn't happen to good people but we really don't know the whole story. Maybe he's abusive or has a drug problem due to PTSD. There might be any number of reasons why he doesn't have custody of his kids. Like I said I'm not trying to discount how unfair family court is towards men but each situation is different.

Anyway, if he's been paying child support for 8 years then, by his timeline, he was away on TOD for part of that. Obviously mom gets full custody if dad is a soldier on active duty. He comes back disabled, so it kind of does make sense that mom retains custody.

It’s so fucked. One of my buddies was in Korea, and had to fly back to the states for court, when his baby’s mom was arrested for being involved in an armed robbery (driver for her new BF). He went to court and was deemed unfit for custody because his military career means “instability”.

The point many of the commentators seem to be missing is I don't think this guy is asking for special treatment for being a vet, he's saying being a vet and serving overseas shouldn't be held against him. It's absurd he owes that much while earning a government salary or disability and then he still doesn't even get partial custody.

There is bound to be more to this story. The courts don't take away 100% of your custody unless you fucked up. Does he have a criminal record? Any addictions? History of abuse after all of that time in the military? All I'm saying is...
