Somewhat. Clothes are basically markers of class. A guy can be tall and handsome but if he's wearing disheveled, ratty clothes I'll subconsciously assume he's poor/uneducated/possibly homeless and it will lower his desirability for me**.

However anything beyond clean, well fitting clothes isn't going significantly boost a guy's desirability. For example an 8 in a nice t shirt and jeans is still going to be more attractive than a 6 in a suit.

**Note I'm talking about both casual and long term desirability

It pretty much doesn't matter to me at all as long as he knows how to dress for the occasion/environment, but that's more about social competence than caring about the clothes themselves.

My husband pretty much lives in the dreaded cargo shorts/T-shirt combo. As long as he's not wearing that to a wedding or a funeral I don't give a shit.

They don’t have to be expensive but well-fitting, contextually appropriate, and clean clothes are important. I’m not saying he needs to be ready to attend a black tie event tomorrow, but showing up to a restaurant in sweaty gym clothes, or gaming t-shirts with cargo shorts isn’t going to score any points.

You can buy most of your clothes at Target and still look good.

Ehh it does to a certain extent but more as a potential indicator of whether our tastes etc align. I prefer people with more alternative/grungy/casual looks - if someone's always decked out in chinos and designer polo shirts, I don't find it as attractive but also we may have some compatibility issues.

That said, clothing can influence my in the moment attraction in a relationship too - I find my partner particularly attractive in a shirt and waistcoat with sleeves rolled up but it would be a bit much if he wore that all the time 😅

As an example..my friend is tall, blonde, super fun and loving, really magnetic personality. When I first met her BF I thought he was a slumming sugar daddy because he was so unattractive compared to her, and dressed like a slob w dirty ripped up poor fitting clothes. Then she showed me his military ID and I had a good look at his face clean cut. Then I see his raggedy beard and greasy unevenly cut hair. Dude is hot, has a Chad face. Isnt super fit but not fat. Hard to tell when you see wing sauce all over his shirt.

This is one of Many examples .. yes, it’s extremely important that a man wear clean flattering clothes and have his head and facial hair in the most flaterring light.

Caveat emptor - If said dude is a 1-3, the above prob won’t be enough to make a difference

For me, their style usually supersedes their looks if they dress super super well (very creative almost hispterish but neat and well fitted, luxury with flair). I had friends tell me before that I need to start picking men outside of their style and what lifestyle I assume they live as a result of it. It makes it hard because i don't find most mens that attractive on a base level. Their style was the great equaliser for me.

The amount of influence depends.

I think it suffices to say that approaching a woman for the first time goes a lot better if your clothing is both flattering and situationally appropriate. If you have a unique (but fashionable) style and some attributes that CAN be flattered, this is pretty much your way to that coveted "chad-like" status where you have the best chances getting a lot of women to smile at you, be open to you, talk with you, etc.

Relevant example: A guy in middle school wore baggy cargo pants and ratty t-shirts. He had bad teeth and frizzy, long-ish hair. I literally noted him as ugly, and I'm the type to give a LOT of grace to men for looks. In high school, he started wearing new skinny jeans and dark-colored shirts that displayed his personal likes. Skinny jeans flattered his body type with long, strong legs. He also began to keep his hair neat. He even joined the most advanced math program... so I developed a stupid crush on him. Would I have likes him just because he took care of himself? No. But it made him nice to look at, and that counts. Just looking neat and fashionable to others will get you small amounts of positive attention.

The real trick is turning a couple glances of positive attention nto a number exchange or a date. This is where the confidence of looking how YOU want to look can help you as an approaching man.

If I don't think he's physically attractive, why would his clothing warrant any attention from me? I've left-swiped very attractive men with only sneakers/hoodies/sweatpants on their profiles. Both are important.

They're probably nice dudes, but.. if he can't even make an effort in his first impression, I don't want him.

My partner wears black jeans/formal pants, fitted t-shirt and some nice shoes for casual wear. It's not very fancy and expensive-looking, but it looks nice. He saves his ratty sweatpants and sneakers for when he's going on a run.

i would like to chime in on that question... why do women often prefer casual clothes on men? casual clothes and even leisure clothes (at home though)? i heard that a lot from different women over the years... so often that i sometimes think they want the man to dress down... even have that discussion with my own gf quite a few times, when she tries me to get into casual wear (like you see on tv, lighter colors and whatever) and leisure wear at home, which is not going to happen, but i would like to understand the reasoning behind it, when most people know that when they see their dude in leisure clothes on the couch they loose attraction pretty fast...

(the reason im never going to wear anything like that is that i dont own anything like that, not even shoes that remotely resemble running shoes)

My personal preference is an athletic/casual style because it tends to be flattering, non pretentious, and usually suggests that a guy’s in decent shape. Certain jewelry like a small chain can really pull an outfit together. There are also certain styles and clothes that turn me off. Preppy looks (vineyard vines,etc), anything too formal, cargo shorts etc, camo print. Anything too serious looking isn’t for me, and I’m not into the country/redneck look either.

Straight up? Like 80% But don’t interpret it this as 80% of attraction is positively influenced by clothing. Interpret this as a screener. My attraction tends to subtract more than add and most of the disqualifications come from clothes. Your 6 pack abs don’t matter to me if I am embarrassed to be seen with you. There will be some positive feelings associated to those that go above and beyond with style. I have taken a second look at a guy or turned around because his clothes were good and I wanted to get a better look at his face. One caveat, if you are overweight, you’ve already failed the first screener so I never got to evaluate clothes. So, in order for screening- body, clothes/style, then face.

To me, it's about fit. Clothing can enhance your body, but it can also hide your body or make it look worse. A man with well-fitting (and/or tailored) clothing will BE more physically attractive than a poorly dressed one, that's the whole point. For example, if guy A wears a shirt 2 sizes too big, I can't see his body and so he'd be less attractive. Guy B wears a shirt that shows off his muscles= more attractive. Similarly, if guy B wears pants that fit properly, he won't look like he's being swallowed or look bigger than he really is.

It depends, I personally don’t look at whether the clothes are trendy or high brand. But they will always say a lot about who the person is, their style, their overall vibes, but also at their lifestyle. If someone’s clothes smell bad or are stained I will seduce their their habits aren’t the healthiest. Its not so much what the person looks like but more what it says about them

It’s subconscious but I definelty notice a sharp dressed man. Or a really dumpy dressed one. Clothes definitely give an impression of who you are. It does make a difference especially in style conscious younger women. I think older women usually don’t give a rats ass

It does in the sense that it signals what he is like

A businessman in a fancy suit seems corporate and from another universe to me.

Overly dressed up guy seems self-obsessed, fashionable and into whatever is popular, trying too hard to impress

A guy in jeans and converse with some normal shirt/jacket looks like he could be relatable and closer to mentality I like

A guy in track suit and some ugly sandals, or cargo will just look ugly

Overall, he should look nice but he shouldn't care about fashion and brands. Classical, simple, not flashy but he needs some basic sense of taste even if it means just wearing 2 colours and 1 type of jeans + ok sneakers.

Honestly how he dresses might be more important to me than how he physically is, because how he dresses can signal personality and values. If he's wearing a T-shirt with a phrase that's in accordance with my political leanings or related to my hobbies and in my opinion funny, this can boost my attraction quite a bit. I'm also a big fan of guys in makeup or cross-dressing, guys who wear bright colors, guys who wear pants that are snug around the butt, and guys who wear quirky ties/socks/scarves. In contrast, I'm going to go dry as beef jerky if he's wearing a MAGA hat or a T-shirt that says something like, "make me a sandwich." A cop or military uniform is a turn-off as well.

If he's wearing something that doesn't really signal personality (e.g., a plain gray T-shirt or button-up), the clothes won't matter much to me. Slight plus for wearing clothes that fit well, but the level of formality and brands don't make a difference at all.

meh. as long as he doesn’t dress like a hillbilly, or a hobo (ridiculously baggy clothes or distressed clothes), or like one of those “swaggy” guys who wears his pants with his ass out and wears bape, idrc what he’s wearing. i don’t pass judgement on people based on what their wearing, so it wouldn’t really change my opinion much.

i do find it more attractive when a man has more of a formal style though. it doesn’t have to be super formal, just more formal than sweatpants all the time.

ironically enough, my bf is the kind of guy who only wears jeans for an occasion or if i ask him to, otherwise it’s sweatpants. i don’t mind, but i prefer him dressed up.

Women operate on how repulsive someone is. Some guys don't have a chance at all despite doing everything perfect. The most handsome guy can do everything perfect but is so bad in one aspect that he loses all attraction points.

Especially the women into subculture claim style is important over ‘face aesthetics’ are deluding themselves— no the ‘ugly goth guy’ at your school wasn’t attractive because of his style, he probably had great hair, a nice smile and high cheekbones to pull of the alternative look.

I do pay attention to it cause I may think a guy is super attractive, but I won’t go for it if I can tell “yea this dude cares way more for his looks than I do, that may possibly be a turn off for him” and vice versa

A lot. "Don't judge a book by it's cover" is a bs for the most part, the way somebody cares for their appearance tells you so much about their personality and lifestyle.

It's not about brand clothes or expenses accessories at all though, but about being able to dress appropriately for events and social gatherings, having neat and clean clothes that smell good and fit well. It tells you a lot about the relationship this person has with society and at least for me personally, it definitely matters.
