I think we all more or less agree that Men need to be good in something to be even considered by women. It coulde be looks, money, status, skills, etc; and the standards are rising fast. Ideally men over-develop a niche that made them important on one aspect of life, ideally by developing a skill or offering unique service / labor, specialization. Women also have this imperative more than ever, but they still have the option to just pick a winner. A woman may even be rich and successful and still expect for a more more successful man to date, even if technically they do not need him to be better than her.

As time passses and technology develops, genders rely on each other less and less, people who choose to be alone or cannot get a partner can cope: porn, social media, hook ups, video games. Therefore, Relationships are a luxury, an ideal extra rather than a need, so women feel free to be picky and men feel free to not invest too much commitment in them either.
