That song is as straightforward as it gets dude...

She's in a relationship that turns bad but you're in it just because of habit, sunk-cost fallacy and the fear of the unknown that comes with being newly single.

She then reassures herself that the breakup is the right choice because she'll get over him. She won't die without him, she can still have fun without him.

That’s not what the song means. The song is saying she loves ALL of the things he did for her, but that’s not a reason to stay in a bad relationship cuz she can give it to herself.

Pretty sure the conceit of the song is that the dude either isn't doing a lot of the stuff the lyrics describe or that they're pretty easy to do for yourself (buying flowers, holding your own hand, going dancing). And that's the thing right, it's a problem if you can easily replace your dude. That's the sad part of a relationship especially the ones on the rocks, they're so unhappy that you can't even find things that aren't easily done yourself or replaced.

I don't think anyone is looking down on small acts, I think the problem is that small acts aren't enough to maintain a relationship which is unhappy and they don't justify keeping a man who isn't good for you anymore.

As for why is a break up song like this celebrated by women? Because a lot of women have been in these trashfire relationships where they were miserable and every time they asked for the dude to change or the relationship to get better, the dudes would do these kind of things or throw in their woman's face how apparently lucky they are for this stuff. And for a lot of ladies, the moment they finally felt free to leave was a moment in a super market where they realized flowers are ten bucks and they have ten bucks. They can hang out with themselves. They can go dancing. And that well, they can love themselves better than this miserable relationship and dude can.

It's also a pretty universal message being honest, a lot of dudes could probably have a healthy epiphany if they went to a grocery store and bought themselves some flowers and a 6 pack.

She's quite literally saying that the things she appreciated, enjoyed, and misses from her ex; she's actually capable of doing for herself. If they weren't enough, as u mentioned, she wouldn't feel compelled to replicate his actions.

What's the controversy? She wrote a song about a breakup she had, expressing some fairly common feelings other people have during breakups...that the other person wasn't particularly good at loving them.

Personally I think the key in that song about what lead inexorably to her specific breakup was "say things you don't understand" Her ex either genuinely had no idea what she was talking about sometimes or he feigned not knowing to not have to deal with it.

I don't for sure know what the topic was she so desperately needed to be understood on I probably never will. And that's ok. I've got a few suspicions, there's clues in other songs but the world doesn't need to hear them, it won't do Liam or Miley any good to be discussed in that way and if Miley wanted the details talked about she would have put more details in the song.

What this song shows is she's not over him.

It's over, he moved on and is happy, it's in the past for him. She is still writing songs trying to convince herself how she is over him.

Sometimes you may meet a person in your life that you simply cannot get over, no matter what. And if this person rejects you, the fairy tale can turn into an anguish. It's better to never meet such a person.
