Considering that women have more and more freedoms not only to divorce men they don't want to be with, but also not to marry them in the first place, why aren't we seeing marriages becoming more stable?

From my earlier comment:

The lowest [recent] divorce-to-marriage ratio was observed in 2017 at 42 divorces per 100 marriages (which is still very much above which I'd consider acceptable), and stood pretty much stable at above 40 divorces per 100 marriages since bloody 1973.

Yes, I hear someone from the back row saying, but maybe it's people who have been married for some time, maybe they just kinda drifted apart, maybe it's boomers finally catching up to the trend...

But not exactly, the highest divorce rates are observed for 15-24 age group. Not to the extent it used to be in the 1990s, but still higher than for any other group.

The absolute amount of people getting divorced at higher ages might be higher, since we're dealing, among other things, with people who divorced and remarried.

"But," I hear you say, "isn't median age at divorce for women surpassed 40?" Yes; and what's the mean? - They decided not to publish it. Median age at divorce crawls up a little when people basically gained extra decade of lifespan in the last 50 years.

Yes, we're seeing less divorces because we're seeing less marriages. No, we are not seeing marriages getting more stable.

Mods: please don't retag the post as CMV. The headline is "not neutral" ("are marriages becoming more stable?") because established facts of the matter are not neutral.

Edit: (as per request)

"Marital stability can be defined as remaining legally married without divorce, physical separation, or legal separation. Marital stability is related to but distinct from marital adjustment, marital quality, marital satisfaction, and marital success... Marital stability is generally associated with positive outcomes for adults and children."
