Do men show up to dates smelling bad out of lack of awareness or lack of care?

I keep seeing posts on r/dating_advice about women going on perfectly good dates, however the only issue was their date smelling horrible. Other instances seem to be that there was other issues on top of the men smelling bad. In any case I see many posts mentioning this. I never thought it was an issue until I myself dealt with it.

Seemed to have a good connection with this guy, first date he didn’t smell great, but not particularly awful. Second date he straight up smelled like shit, and even worse breath. I’m just very curious why someone wouldn’t take a shower and brush their teeth before going on a date. Don’t you think there’s a chance they could get in close? A chance for a kiss? Needless to say there’s not gonna be further dates(to be clear it was more than because of his smell, but the smell is what sealed the deal).

What’s driving all these men to not smell nice on a date? I feel like grooming yourself, smelling nice, dressing nice, is the bare minimum you can do to show effort for a date. If you aren’t willing to do these things why even date?
