Well, because in your mind, you're having the conversation as a gateway to get their social media. In her mind, she's not interested in you and was having a conversation just to have a conversation. It's not clicking in their brain that once she rejects your asking for social media that you have no interest in speaking anymore because she never saw you as a romantic prospect to begin with.

The guys here think that every young woman has a huge social media presence.

Some young women have only close friends and family on social media, and frankly, because of the cesspool social media is, keep their friends list small.

15 years ago, you meet someone once, anyone, and you exchanged social media info, it was a given.

It is not anymore, most people who.will add people after one conversation are those looking for a following.

Much less invasive to ask for the number, and leave exchanging social media for that crowd that does everything for social media.

In my case, in high school and college I had a lot of people almost half interrogate me about it or get kinda huffy or distant after I'd say that I don't really have any social media. I've got a couple things I use to keep in contact with family or old, old friends but even then I'm barely on it. I've got a couple reddit counts, a discord, and a Facebook I log into like twice a year. If.

I just never saw too much appeal blasting myself out for the world to see. I got all I needed of that sorta thing in person. But if I didn't give a full explanation, usually people thought I was brushing them off or didn't like them enough to give them it.

Because they don't realize that you think the conversation is over because they declined to give you their social media.

They are being kind and polite. While it sounds like you're ready to turn and walk away after getting a "no"....

The conversation doesn't just end because they don't give you their IG handle.

Maybe they don’t have social media, and they aren’t rejecting you. You can ask them for their number. If they give an excuse or a fake phone number then you have your answer.

Interesting as I was visiting my kids at uni last weekend they are gen z early 20s, we were hanging out with their friends and they were all saying, men and women that being asked for their snap is a huge turn off.

The phrase are we still 12 was mentioned a lot.

She’s rejecting keeping in contact but not good at ending the conversation. Or, the conversation is good but not good enough to want more at a later date. She may just be trying to be polite and hope you get the memo to exit stage left. A lot of women are legitimately scared to reject a man too hard.

Also- I’d prefer to just be asked to hang out again than be asked for my social media. Maybe that’s a bit old school. But my socials are pretty locked down and I don’t use them much. Plus it removes uncertainty about intention.

The way you describe it makes it seem like you were expecting her to be a mind reader about you wanting to end the conversation. Unless you say “bye,” if I’m enjoying the conversation, why would I stop talking to you just because I don’t have social media?

Also it’s pretty obvious that she was just interested in having a good conversation and nothing more.

Maybe if they actually don't use social media they'd still want to keep in touch with you but just through a more old-fashioned kinda media. Like maybe suggest exchanging phone numbers instead, or e-mails, or maybe she has a fax machine.

Or, maybe they just enjoy the conversation but still don't wanna date. Sometimes people just like having a chat.

I'm willing to continue the random irl encounter, but i don't want to give them personal contact. If we stumble upon each other often and the conversations are nice, i might be willing to allow the pissibility of a more intentional/targeted interaction by giving them a means to contact me outside of randomly stumbling upon me.
