There is absolutely nothing wrong in going on a date to a fancy restaurant. Instead of going by yourself, the company of a cute girl would be far better (especially if she is also into fine dining). However, make it clear that you are splitting the bill.

You're being programmed by society. Your dad has been. The societal belief is that men are somehow worth less than girls and more disposable, and so must earn girls, or compensate them for their time.

All in all, you don't need to compensate them by paying for expensive dates and such. I don't buy expensive dinners until I'm already banging them on the regular. Even then, I keep it infrequent enough not to make a habit out of it.
