There are mixed views about this. I think if you want to fuck lots of hot young women, this is not the greatest approach. If you want to find a wife, it's a good approach (when some women hit a certain point in their life many want to settle down with a provider type and well reject the more alpha type men).

As for the approach:

It shows a lot of confidence
It shows good social skills

You only buy someone a drink if they prove they are worthy of it. You don't go buying every hot girl you see a drink, that's stupid and bad economics. You sit, you talk and you find out if YOU think she's cool enough for you to spend YOUR money on a drink for her. That's similar to one of my lines/routines at the clubs and bars. "I don't mean to interrupt but I had to say that you are gorgeous! My name is Andre...I'm not going to piss off your boyfriend by talking with you am I?"

It shows confidence, the compliment is sincere, and it certainly lets me know if a girl is interested in me or taken. I make sure to introduce myself to anyone with her so I don't get any unwanted interruptions myself. Plus I might make a wingman spontaneously if I play my cards right. You never know.
