If they really think that women will only take off an average of one day a quarter for menstrual reasons, then why not just say everyone gets an extra 4 days of paid sick time for whatever reason? That would be the true path to treating everyone, man or woman, equally.

What about other illnesses individuals may suffer from? I had an intense emotional and mental breakdown over a year ago and had to lie that I was really ill to get off work (last time I said I'm feeling mentally unwell, I was forced to come to work). I felt so bad I couldn't move, I was shivering and felt incredibly weak and fucked up, had contemplated suicide prior to this. I went to a public psychiatrist and everything, didn't get sick leave, nor could I use any of my paid days off (company policy says I cannot take time off during festive months and this was in December). I was also told that I had to get a doctors note, when I handed a note from a psychiatrist, it wasn't acceptable to them despite being clinically diagnosed with moderate depression and anxiety. But ok.

If they do that they really need to stop paying by salary and go back to hourly wages because if a woman is getting 2-5 days off a month, she should be paid less as she did less work. Either that or give the male employees a year end bonus to make up for the difference.

And because of absence, working 1 week a month less than men, they should get paid less. If they worked like they were supposed to without bloody excuses (profane and literally), then they are paid equally to men, just as they have been. But watch the feminists go batshit when women are paid less because they get a week's vacation every month. We can't pay them more per hour compared to men on the hourly rate, just to keep up with a monthly salary, as that's inequality. The entitlement many women have for getting so little work done compared to most men, yet getting paid equally is ridiculous. Thats like a McDonalds crewman getting paid the same amount of money as the head chef of a 5 star restaurant in Hollywood. That's why I believe "equal pay for equal work" and "quality of work equals quantity of pay" are great ideas instead of base salaries and minimum wage systems. You get paid what you're worth, based on the kind of work you do, its difficulty, your full effort and the quality of the results. And if it's just about the leakage of blood, then I'd be getting paid a month's salary for only a week's amount of work. I have hemorrhoids, and I bleed almost every day and it hurts like hell just to sit down. Plus I have gastritis, IBD and Crohn's thus it takes me an hour to crap, so I need longer breaks. Give me money because my ass is on fire! I gotta wear tampons up my bunghole! And just because I'm a dude, I'm not supposed to be emotional about this? Bullcrap! Being a female is not an excuse to be lazy, pandered to or entitled to extra benefits given by law or society. If women want equality, they need to prove that they deserve it by EARNING IT.

Wouldn't any company with such policies prefer hiring men, which completely takes away from the whole 'equality' factor? If you start paying people of the same gender the same for less work, it would be a really bad business move to hire people of that gender

Edit: in case of an economic downturn or just bad times for a business, they would likely also fire the people who, again, cost the same but do less work.

This is wrong. Women should not be given leave during menstruation. To say they need leave during menstruation is one more reason why they may be better off staying at home. You want to work then you get to work. You need to be at work from 9-5 and figure out how to handle your business within those parameters like any other employee. I doubt if they're gonna actually pay anyone to be out on leave, maybe once or twice, but in the end they'll codify it as an HR policy and add stuff to the fine print.

For some women, their period can be debilitating, for example, for women with endometriosis. We're not just talking about aches, we're talking about not being able to leave the house. Menstrual cramps can literally be as painful as a heart attack. These women need to deal with this on a monthly basis on top of any other medical conditions and issues, such as migraines.

Also, "equality" doesn't mean that men and women are the same. We are not. And I'm sure that there are also things that men have to deal with that women don't. But reaching "equality" for men and women means understanding these differences and adjusting accordingly. If a man bled uncontrollably from his penis every month while feeling a heart attack, while being nauseous and incredibly fatigued I would definitely vote for him to have a couple days off.

(Side note: this issue isn't like having a migraine. We're talking about the biological process that allows the human race to continue. Women aren't "heros" for taking this burden on, but at least respect the fact they have to, and that for some this is incredibly painful.)

In the UK, 50% of girls have missed days of school cos of their period. It impacts a lot of women and by formally recognising this, it would bring validity to them saying they need time off work. It might reduce stigma etc

I see your point with migraines and it does make sense, I think the difference is however that its half the population that are vulnerable to this issue, and going off the cited statistic, it would suggest that about the quarter of the population are having to live with this monthly

If men had painful periods, such a leave would be normal since having a job was invented. I think it should be at least normalised that women can feel terrible 1-2 days a month. Some employers still have a problem with women taking a day off because of period. Which for some is extremely painful or is just vomiting + diarrhoea whole day.

Dude you have never ever experienced menstrual pain, there are women (lots of women) that have SOP and other issues that makes at least a day or two really miserable, maybe I wouldn’t ask a menstrual leave but to be listed as a medical reason because most times is just taboo, and most doctors won’t recognize it

The reason this shouldn't be counted as sick leave is that (for the woman who really suffers during their period) it happens every month (unless pregnant or on hormone blockers) and wouldn't do the women who would need to take a day or few off during that time every month much justice as they would most likely get fired because of the time off. it would be better to compare it to a chronic condition (which I have) and get consideration for it.

The bigger issue I think with this law is the women who abuse it. if it is abused and they get paid time off every month without any scrutiny or evidence needed then it will cost companies a lot of money and will more likely lead back to a place where men are going to be favored for employment over women because they won't have to pay out this type of leave.

As far as your Migraines, that sucks man I suffer from them too, I think it's hard to compare the two though, again looking from the perspective of the women who suffer very badly from periods (which can often come with migraines to be fair).

If migraines are chronic (headaches that last more than 15 days each month with 8 or more days with migraine symptoms) then I think this should be considered by employers and treated differently from sick days. but only cause this can be confirmed and verified by doctors.

I completely understand your frustration with your migraines OP, I do, that sounds like something that can be debilitating and absolutely detrimental to your work, especially if you have to push through it without leave. However, allowing for Menstrual Leave should be kept separate from this thought as this is an issue that affects all women in different fashions. As men, we cannot determine how painful a period could be as we have never experienced it ourselves, and should trust that this Menstrual leave might help a lot of women who are really hindered by the stresses of their period. Sometimes menstruations can be incredibly painful, and horribly moody, and debilitating for some women (not all, it does vary), and I'd bet those women would continue to work if their periods weren't so horrible for them. It's something that is out of control, much like your migraines, and I believe personally, asking for paid leave in those select cases where a period is truly horrifying is fair, women can't take a whole week without pay once a month otherwise their finances living independently would be incredibly difficult. We've got to understand that this is a widespread issue that is very evidently affecting women worldwide, belittling this with the words "where is my migraine leave" is a bit closed minded. I understand your sentiment and I agree you deserve paid leave when your migraines are unbearable, however we've got to be grateful we live in a society now where women's issues like this are recognized. I believe in the path of equality and equity, men and women's issues are very different, and both sides have many different struggles, so we should all work together so that both sides can be treated fairly with their issues. People with migraines being allowed paid leave, and women with intense periods being allowed the same treatment.

I work in a school and have seen some teens suffer with period issues. One girl was curled up on the floor (she had only just started according to her and the mother) so on this occasion I don’t think it’s wrong.

Although I wouldn’t mind “I’m over a certain age and sat on my balls by accident” leave 😂. (This is a joke. I’ve never sat on my balls. I put them in the back pocket 😂😂)
