Before the student loan bubble, colleges seemed to pride themselves on placement rates and starting salaries for their graduates. The ones with above average #s, marketed that. Many colleges were very selective in who they admitted into each program and how many because they wanted to keep those #s up.

It seems like the easy availability of student loans made colleges eyes light up and gobble up all that $ and start ignoring when the supply of graduates for a given major started outstripping the demand. The inevitable fall of placement rates and starting salaries was swept under the rug.

People seem to finally be realizing that 100k in student loans are not worth it if you're probably going to be making close to minimum wage when you're done.

It is a tough problem to unravel. It's not fair to the people who made responsible decisions that those who made poor decisions are getting partly off the hook.

Why do people get a degree just to get themselves into debt? They are essentially leeching from society. Higher education is meant to benefit society, not drain it.

Many of these self called "educated" people brag about their multiple degrees, masters, phds, whatever. They only stayed in school because they weren't able to find a job with their useless bachelors.

They don’t need to forgive student debt, you can do what Australian uni/colleges do and give them the debt to pay off.

Oh, that student can’t find a job? Okay we won’t charge you anything on your debt. No need to pay the debt, No interest, no monthly increases, nothing.

You found a job now that pays you a decent wage? Okay now you need to pay the debt off while we add interest and monthly costs in. You lost your job? Back to no need to pay, no interest, no monthly costs.

This means that you aren’t constantly having interest added that you can’t pay because of a low wage job or unemployed.

That’s the best solution to the student debt crisis.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind them taking $10k off my student loan debt. As a young man this would help me a great deal and set me up better in the world. However, this really is not a women’s issue but a financial issue. Colleges are inflating the price of tuition. Many universities are paying outlandish salaries to coaches, presidents, vice-presidents, chairs, and many other positions while raising prices on students. I understand having a free market for colleges but when you leave college with $60k in debt its destructive towards the career of young adults.

Just because it would disproportionately benefit women doesn't mean it's a men's rights issue. Let's stay on brand and make sure we're consistent with our messaging. I'm personally in favor of canceling student loans because it helps a lot of people, both men and women, many of whom were exploited by profiteers, get out from under crushing financial obligations they unwisely took on when they were very young. I don't agree that cancellation of student debt is on the table only because it benefits women more -- although this certainly may be part of the appeal for some. Regardless, I do think it is interesting that 70% of student loans are held by women, because it highlights how great the educational disparities between men and women have become. We are neglecting the education of boys and young men.

I paid mine off. I also took a credit hit because when you get I missed a few payments before I know forbearance was a thing. My credit score suffered for years and didn’t get into the 700s until my mid thirties when I disputed it. It shows up for years.

Student loans as they currently exist are absurd. Most of it won't get paid because of income based repayment rules. They're a huge subsidy to universities and a ticking time bomb to the budget. We need to go back to the old system, where states funded public universities properly and tuition was a nominal amount. Then the cost to the public is known up front and won't snowball the federal government. End student loans. They're a scam.
