My ex said the same thing after an awful contested divorce. I think, to her, the idea of taking care of a house alone (and the kids when she has them) was daunting and she was scared of facing it all alone. I asked her if she was joking because hell naw. Sell the house if you can’t handle it, I’m done.

My STBX actually suggested a 6 year legal separation until our youngest turns 18. Similar situation, I earn all the $$, pay all, ALL the bills and expenses, health insurance, etc etc. Not a f%$@king chance!! And I had already moved out and I'm STILL paying for everything while the lawyers bicker back and forth. I can't wait for this to all be over!

Well I just completed my uncontested divorce (no kids) and my ex wife asked if I could stay in the house until the end of the year to help pay the mortgage 50/50 so she could save up a bit more and find a roommate. It’s cheaper than renting anywhere nearby so works to my advantage as well. We both agreed if we start dating no inviting the bf/gf to the house. Everyone’s situation can be different.

Yeah they think they want it because they're INDEPENDENT. But then they begin to realize what all that entails and they panic tf out. And if they're beyond their dating prime with regard to looks/fitness they realize they may spend many years or the rest of their life alone.

There are still guys who allow their wives not work. My wife makes as much as I do. When she started with the narratives that I wasn't doing enough, and her legs were staying closed until I did. I wasn't worried. When she asked for a separation I went and got a divorce settlement. We make similar income; not including my disability benefits which she found out was untouchable.

To her credit she can afford the house, and I wasn't fighting for my share of equity. When she realized how much of my money was going to be out of her budget she freaked. All of a sudden I wasn't a bad husband. She didn't want a separation. Oh, she also noticed the moms checking me out at PTA. If I would have had a better reason to leave; than I thought she wanted it, I'd be single.

There are situations where the children will continue to reside at the house, and the parents will have an "off-week" apartment that they go to.

The concept is called "nesting".

You can have your own off-week apartments, or a common apartment depending on your financial and post-divorce situation.

It's not very common, but in some situations it's appropriate.

I'm pretty sure that my stbxh was also thinking this way. I had to tell him that I am not living with a man who has divorced me and I did not know what the hell he was thinking.

I feel like he wanted the benefits of having me live with him while not having to commit. And then I think about it more and think that's just crazy and I have no idea why he would assume that was ok.

She just doesn't want to pay the bills.....I think the disruption to the kids has very little to do with it. Kids adapt very quickly to the new normal, and whilst there can be some short term issues, by and large if both parents can co-parent well...the kids will be happy with 2 homes.

My ex thought similar things and threw accusations at me that were completely false. I’m pretty sure that many women just don’t really think things through on their own.

I don’t WANT my ex to suffer, for the sake of our son, but I’ve seen signs that she’s struggling. She hasn’t been able to hold a job down and just told me today that she has another new job (looks like a downward move IMO). I’m sure her rent for a 1 bedroom is about the same as my mortgage and rents keep going up where I live.

When she first left she expected me to do a lot of things for her still and I slowly realized that I wasn’t getting anything in return so I stopped helping her. Let her figure it out on her own if she wants to be on her own. This mentality doesn’t make me happy, but trying to be there for her when she made no effort for our family wasn’t doing me any good either.
