1. What is your gender (growing up)?
  2. Which parent pushed gender roles on you more?

I feel like there's a lot of this "OH, WOMEN are the ones forcing us to be manly." and "OH, MEN are the ones forcing us to look and act feminine." But when I think about it is seems like the opposite. My dad hardly ever pushed me towards doing more feminine things but my mom always did. ("Don't cut your hair! It's so pretty and feminine." "You shouldn't curse because it's not ladylike" etc ). Meanwhile, my dad was coach of my softball teams AND supported any girly arts and crafty thing I was into.

The reverse is true for my brother. My mom has never forced him to be more manly but on the other hand, my dad got pissed off because my mom brought my brother to get a pedicure with her as a kid (no polish or anything, his feet were just nasty), and once forced him to go to baseball practice with an (undiagnosed) burst appendix because he thought my brother was just "exaggerating" his pain and needed to toughen up.

My point is, I think in many cases the gender roles that negatively affect us are more perpetuated by our own gender than the opposite one.
