My good friend had an ex like this and it wasn’t long before it became violent. He is pathetically insecure. He is threatened and he is trying to tear her down so that she doesn’t leave him, now that she is working on herself and beginning to realize what she is capable of. The more confidence she gets, the more aggressive his attempts will become. This behavior leads to serious abuse, control, and manipulation of it isn’t already there. Hopefully she gets out now before it gets worse.

This is so sad, but not uncommon. Many men want to be better at everything (other than cooking, cleaning, etc) than their SO and will act terribly when you’re inevitably better than them. This really comes to a head with LVM after having children, when the children get old enough to start accomplishing things (even little kids) the man will start to get jealous and insecure and compete with the kids for their wife’s attention.

One of the ways I like to vet men I’m dating is by playing games like pool or cards or chess and observe how they behave when they lose. If they are sulky or act like a little bitch then it’s over tbh. Same goes for discussing work accomplishments and other personal successes. I have pretty much vetted my boyfriend already at this point, but a point in his favor is that we can easily spend 3+ hours playing poker, I beat him every game, and he still has a lot of fun and wants to keep playing. There’s never a snarky comment about it being all luck, just “Wow, you’re so good at this!”

This makes me angry for her. I lift weights, and pre-covid me and my husband did together and had a little crew of regulars that we worked out with. I am much smaller than all those guys in the weight room, and I lift and pull much smaller numbers (except on hip thrust, squat and dead lift—I matched some dudes!). My husband in particular benches and deadlifts multiple plates—and he and the other guys always would get excited and high five me and talk up how strong I am. Even now that hubs is in a crazy strongman dungeon gym and I don’t lift as heavy as I used to and pole at home a lot—he sees me execute a move and still comments how strong I look. I ask if he thinks he can do it and he says no—he’s likely humoring me but it’s still sweet. He never tries to overshadow my fitness and strength accomplishments—why would he? We are in different leagues of strength and fitness by miles, there’s no need to compete, just be supportive of each other.

So I was on my university’s crew team.

Rowing machines (called “ergs”) and how fast a person goes on one are heavily influenced by weight. A heavier person can generally produce more force than a lighter person. But, in a real boat, the heavier person weighs the boat down and creates more drag by pushing it further down into the water. The erg doesn’t account for this penalty, so your erg time may look fast, but it won’t necessarily translate to real speed on the water compared to a lighter teammate with slower times. We know that males are on average much heavier than females, so let’s break it down.

Taking a look at the erg ranking for males, the 25th percentile is 4:00.5 total time for 1000m. Assuming “sub 4” is 3:99.9 (or very close), he’s just barely beating out 25% of other males of all ages. For women, the 25th percentile is 4:55.3 and the 50th percentile is 4:25.9 meaning that she’s beating out closer to 35% of women of all ages. When we compare apples to apples, she did much better than him.
