I applaud DeSantis for these reforms. It's a first step in the right direction in family law reform. But it didn't go nearly far enough, and there is far more needed.

First, no man should ever, under any circumstances, be forced to pay support for a child he did not either biologically father or willingly adopt. Ever. No matter how long he wrongly believed the child was his. Mothers need to be held legally and financially accountable if they commit paternity fraud by misleading a man into believing he is the father when he is not, or lies to the state about her child's paternity to extract money from a man who is not the child's father. No state should be able to order a man to pay child support without paternity being properly established. And any man who had his pay wrongly garnished for child support should be paid restitution with interest from either the state or the lying mother.

Alimony should never be awarded when both spouses worked, but one outearned the other, and the marriage did not have a seriously negative impact on the career of the lesser earner. If a millionaire marries a waitress, he shouldn't have to pay the waitress alimony just because she had a low paying job and he didn't. Nobody should be able to cash in just because they married a wealthy partner. Marriage should not be able to be used as a tool to financially benefit beyond the position the person would've still been in if the marriage never happened. If a person marries as a poor person, and did not financially contribute to marriage, they should still be a poor person after divorce. Especially if they are the one who filed for divorce, had an affair, or were abusive.

Proven marital infidelity and abuse needs to be taken into consideration in regards to division of assets in divorce. Same with a spouse who files for divorce without fault. The person who broke the marriage should be penalized, and absolutely should not get a penny of alimony.

Child support needs to be capped at an amount that is considered the reasonable actual cost to care for a child, and the recipient of child support should have to keep receipts showing that the money was spend on the child or for basic living expenses that benefit the child (reasonable housing, utilities, food, etc.). It's crazy to see celebrities paying $50k or more per month on child support, knowing that over 95% of that money will be spent for the luxury of the parent (usually the mom), instead of the child. These ridiculous child support orders are on top of alimony and a very rich share of divided marital assets.

It’s interesting, I thought for the most part, alimony isn’t permanent. If alimony is awarded, it’s usually for half the length of the marriage, unless the marriage lasted over 20 years, and even then it’s often not permanent…or so I thought. My dad was married for 20 years, he pays alimony for 10 years. My friend was married for 6, she pays her ex husband for 3 years…

The concept of alimony makes sense in certain circumstances. Specifically, if the marriage causes one spouse to have to abandon their career in order to become a caretaker.

Caretaker typically means for children between the two, but could include others, if it can be proven.

Alimony, in my opinion, should only last half the duration of the marriage. And the amount should only be for as much as the career they abandoned would have been worth, minus any career they maintained while married (eg, continuing to work part time should subtract from the amount). The amount should not exceed 40% of the divorced spouse's income.

This means that whatever you were making going into the marriage, is what you would generally get (temporarily) if you leave the marriage. Aka, marrying someone rich shouldn't net you a pay day.

As well, the amount of alimony received should be reduced if you get a job and start earning your own money. Every 1 dollar earned of your own money should reduce your alimony received by 50 cents.

I'm ignorant to divorce laws, but I do believe in alimony when a child is involved. But when a couple separates and there's no kids....why should there be an automatic split in assets?

Also, I've seen so many times where the wife is receiving child support but she's using that money to party, travel, and have fun. If you were the father, how would you feel knowing the money isn't going to your kid, but rather so your ex can be with other dudes?

Alimony should be like unemployment...short timeframe, a smaller amount then you would get, requires evidence you are looking for a job and if you get a job it is reduced again based on that income.
