I was in a similar situation many years ago, I was like 16. Madly in love with her. We were best friends, long hours on the phone, dedicating songs to each other and the whatnot. Fully blown away. She ended up falling for another dude she met at a concert, I later kind of became her shoulder to cry on about the toxic nonsense, I never came out of the friend zone. I felt more like a girlfriend and it felt bad. I moved on, we're still friends today, but I learnt my lesson.

Now, I keep it polite but real. I'd meet someone I like and express how I feel. If she says it's platonic, and we don't have a prior friendship, I'd tell her I'd rather not torture myself getting to know her while pretending to be OK with it. Respectfully and with no toxicity or reverse psychology. Some of them are OK with it, more of them become intrigued. My philosophy has become: if you don't want me, then I don't want you. And I keep my distance.

You have to know your worth. And if you don't, find it, and if needs be, work on becoming the man you've always wanted to be (increasing your self worth and by extension your confidence). You becoming the best version of you increases your chance with any woman, but all of that is secondary benefit. You have to love yourself so much that you do all these things because you deserve it and you're realizing your true potential. I promise you, if you focus on yourself, wholeheartedly, and forget abt the babes when you think of yourself they'll fall into your world.

There are hero stories out there of brothers making it out of the friend zone, but it takes persistence. I know this dude who pursued a girl for almost 6 years and finally she dated him, but after being in other relationships where men didn't see her worth.

I agree with everything everyone is saying, however, I’ve successfully done it a few times. Once with a coworker and once with someone who lived at my apartment complex (who was also 5 years older than I was).

Both times, I was friend zoned but moved on. I did become actual friends with them with zero intention of hooking up. We hung out regularly, worked out, went to parties together, etc but I was living my own life, dating, etc.

It’s possible but you have to move on 100%. Meaning, if there’s any expectation or sense of you’re still clinging on (even when drinking/piss drunk), they will smell it and it’s never going to happen.

My advice is be friends if the situation makes sense. But divorce yourself from any idea that it will happen. In both cases for me, we were friends for months before they made a move (which I’d say is the only scenario where this works).

Of course, hooking up also ruined both friendships so I’m not sure I’d recommend it, but I digress.

The only way to do this, that I've seen, is to take a lot of time apart. Take back your availability and just don't hang out for 6 months. During that time, get fit, dress better, groom better, and date.

Only other catalyst to change their mind is seeing you with a woman of comparable, or hopefully higher, attractiveness to her.

Doing both of these things is most likely going to result in them now trying to win back your attention. They will talk shit to you about the woman they see you with to try and get you to give her the attention you used to.
