...the study revealed that roughly a quarter of people’s views about gender equality are more complicated, and differ regarding work and home. Most of them say that while women should have the same opportunities as men to work or participate in politics, they should do more homemaking and child-rearing, found the study, which is set to be published in the journal Gender and Society.

“You can believe men and women have truly different natural tendencies and skills, that women are better nurturers and caretakers, and still believe women should have equal rights in the labor force,” said Barbara Risman, a sociology professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and an author of the paper along with William Scarborough, a sociology doctoral candidate there and Ray Sin, a behavioral scientist at Morningstar.

Yet some researchers were surprised that millennials weren’t more egalitarian. Other recent research has found that young people are falling back on traditional gender roles more than expected. Even millennials who want to share earning and domestic responsibilities equally with their partners end up dividing labor more traditionally after they have children. The share of women working has leveled off, and the gender pay gap has not shrunk significantly.

“This generation pushing back in this MeToo movement is a generation raised expecting they would excel in school, get their law degree, and the doors would open right up for them,” she said. “And then what they found is the men they were working with still treated them in ways that were impossible to live with.”

The “Woke” Men Who Still Want Housewives

But for women to make real progress in and out of their homes, men must give something up: the backwards dream of holding onto their feminist bona fides while seeking out female partners willing to limit their own aspirations to the home.

Men cannot claim to be allies to women in this moment while insisting that we’re best suited to fold their laundry and change diapers — though I’m sure no man would ever put it quite that bluntly. Despite Donald Trump, Brett Kavanaugh, and the men of #MeToo, we are in the midst of making real change. But it has to start at home.

So it's preference week apparently. The OP from Skratt this morning highlighted the question "Why do the men on this sub think women are bothered by them and their preference?" Speaking for myself here, but from my experience, women are indeed bothered by male preferences; case in point from this NYT article over the weekend and the proceeding article. Whether the preference is weight, sluttiness (or lack-thereof), or housewife material, you can find women angry about it and not just in feminist blogs.

I always find these claims interesting because I can see the logic. Can you really be "woke" if you even prefer a submissive housewife? Taking leftists claims at face value here, that would mean you prefer gender roles; something tyrannical and oppressive by nature. Is there an ethical way to prefer something oppressive? I'd like to entertain the logic here without challenging the premise. So assuming that gender roles, and the female one in particular, are indeed oppressive, can you prefer this while remaining consistent with social justice ideology?

Q4All: Do you believe that for women to make real progress in and out of their homes, men have to give up their preferences?
