Everyone, there’s a popular AskReddit post currently trending asking sex workers if they had ever fallen for their John. The amount of “I started stripping at 18”, “I was in an abusive relationship at the time”, “I was poor”, “sex trafficked” stories leading to these oh-so heart warming romances is sick. One guy even said he’s in the best relationship of his life with his fiancée who is is a stripper, and his profile shows him and the fiancée have decided to open their relationship. WHAT! The replies are so freaking bizarre because everyone is acting like the stories are so lovely and beautiful but it’s like everyone is ignoring the dark undertones of everything related to the stories.

A lot of people have jobs where they get exploited, forced or abused. People who work in retail or cleaning get shit on and 0 respect too. Same for many other jobs. It's still a job. Just because it's a job doesn't mean it's nice or good.

Honestly I wonder if there's a woman who's doing it for fun for real. No history of abuse, no pressure in some way, like really just for fun. Cause all the women I see doing it are either pushed, have been abused, have no self esteem, are dealing with trauma, etc etc. Doing sex work, sure is work, but it's very damaging tbh.

Thank you for posting this. FDS is against the sex trade, not against individual sexually exploited and financially coerced women themselves.

Just as FDS is against the pornography industry but does not wish any harm to the exploited women.

Please do not be a pickme and defend men's "right" to buy sex over women's rights to be free from the patriarchy. Sex is not a human right. No man will die from lack of sex. But many women die each day from the sex trade.

I just want these women to be able to do their work safely, because a large majority do not really have much choice (capitalism and often times racism) and be able to access worker protections as well as legal recourse for violence and harm. As it stands most SW is illegal and therefore means that women are at increase risk of harm, from both clients and police. The cops are not protecting these women, using undercover stings as an excuse to rape them and and these johns still get away with so much fucked up shit. They even get fucked over by Anti trafficking charities who use them to get funding and dump them on the fucking streets once they’re done with the photo op. It was really eye opening.

I worked at an outreach centre for years with women in the sex industry. Compassionate advocacy for women’s rights, particularly those of our most vulnerable are needed. I don’t think that advocating for these women to have access to workers protections, payments is the same as supporting the trade at ALL. They need some recourse because right now when shit hits the fan they are usually pushed further towards the margins. If fact we could even say that if we directed all this energy to boosting disability rights, stronger rape and assault charges/processes it would help a lot. The prison industrial complex is really real for women in America (and Canada too).

A lot of people are acting like these women aren’t self aware or understand the inherent risk because that’s not representative of the majority. Women aren’t stupid. We should know that more than anyone else. Many know it’s not the best option on the table, but that there’s very little mobility outside the trade and are usually dealing with issues that require a substantial amount of money or time (health issues, custody battles, immigration, etc). Instead of tearing them down and judging (which imo is pickmeisha behaviour) we need to be providing support for these women in difficult positions to have a chance to even navigate life after SW.

We’re all aware the the employment and education opportunity gap is huge for women. It’s not that we don’t do well, it’s often that we’re never given a chance to even try to be something different. Not to mention being a woman that’s disabled, marginalized or who grew up poor. The odds are so enormously stacked against most of us. I count myself as one of the lucky ones.

Anyways I just wanted to share my thoughts and perspectives as someone with extensive experience in policy and the social sector. I feel like we spend so much time bashing rather than finding ways to mobilize and help these women. And trust me, these non-profits and women’s shelters need your support now more than ever.

These women need support from high value women who will treat them with dignity and respect. Who will help them to take the leap to leave the sex trade for good. 💕🙏🏽

On a side note- it’s quite common here to have ‘pimps and hoe’s’ parties where the women dress like hookers and guys dress like pimps. My sister and her boyfriend chose to go in full on catholic nun and preacher outfits. Never been prouder 😂

Making sex work illigal makes it more risky. It also increases human trafficking and exploitation. Allowing it to operate legally eliminates pimps who act as HORRIBLE embezzling banks, drug pushers, and outright abusers. It also allows testing and support to be provided by the government.

I'm not a huge fan of sex work, but I would rather those who are in the industry and safe and supported, than exploited.

Frankly women trade sex and companionship for things, houses, a lifestyle all the time. I've never understood how that was any different.

The fact that almost 800 people like this brings me so much joy. I wish we could all gather and protest or make ourselves heard! I always feel so gaslighted when I express my opinions about sex work.
