Most people work bullshit jobs and would quit if they had the opportunity/Security. This is just an example of that. If I made 11M a year my partner wouldn't be a stewardess / janitor / office drone even if I met them in that role.

I can’t find any stats but I’d be willing to bet the stats for stay-at-home dads would be similar, super high earners can afford to have one parent not work. It just makes sense.

An interesting stat I found when trying to see if there was any comprable research for SAHD (first graph here) was that the second most common demographic for SAHM, behind highest earners, was actually lowest earners. Most SAHMs are from families that are either very wealthy or kinda poor. Middle class is where the least SAHMs are found. I didn’t expect that to be the case and just thought it was interesting.

I make "good money" currently.

My wife went from full time work to SAHM because we both thought it made the most sense. It wasn't worth putting our kids in daycare etc for her to keep working as we had enough money with just me.

I don't think most people plan for this and really not that many go for a trophy wife even, its just the most logical thing to do if you feel you can afford it and shes not married to her career but wants to be a mother.

There is a certain point that one partner is bringing in such a low percentage of the household income that it doesn't make sense for them to work.

Even if the man makes the 1% minimum of 420k and the woman is pulling in 100k, she's still making less than 20% of the family's total income. Is it really worth it for her to work full time instead of taking care of the kids and home?

I mean, yes? Most people aren't 1%ers (duh), most people make a tenth of that or even less. People work because they have to. If a couple can afford for one person to stay home it makes sense for it to be the mom because babies/childcare, but the reality is most people need to incomes to have a comfortable life.

In our current society, stay at home wives (or husbands) are a luxury. We've been convinced that it's somehow a "good" thing when both partners have to have a fulltime job in order to finance a lifestyle marked by consumption and waste.

Of course this also flooded the market with available labor since everyone is looking for a job, so slowly this option one can choose to have more financial freedom slowly turned into a necessity.

I definitely think it should be interpreted as a sign of love to enable a stay at home lifestyle for your partner. On the other hand, there should be an implicit understanding that a partner who is allowed to stay home should show appreciation in some form for that opportunity and not take it for granted. By that I don't necessarily mean submission and devotion by the way, just common sense.

I think women believe it’s great to have the OPTION of a good career. My husband makes well into the 1% range (and so do I). I am pregnant and fully plan on staying at home for a while after having my child simply because we have the option to do so and we believe this option will be the best for the well being of our child as well as my mental and physical well-being (I have an extremely demanding job and bonding with my child and getting in shape post partum will be difficult if I go back to full time work immediately).

The plan is, however, to resume full time work once my children are in a good routine with all day schooling.

Women talk about the importance of a career because 1) it IS fulfilling in and of itself. 2) it’s important to have the option to financially care for yourself if you find yourself in a terrible marriage and need to get out. However, if it makes sense either financially or otherwise for one partner to stay home and they both agree, I don’t see what the issue could possibly be. Maybe I’ve not been on the pulse of these sorts of issues and discussions but I don’t understand the implication that this data somehow proves anything regarding “aLl tHaT tAlK wItH wOmEn wAnTiNg CurrrreeRs”.

Yes I plan on staying home for a while but that certainly doesn’t change the fact that I thought it was a good idea to go through medical school and residency and secure a great career which has not only been incredibly fulfilling but has served me and my family well and will likely do so in the future. It also doesn’t negate the experiences of women who were satisfied in their career and chose to give it up indefinitely for a family either. It also doesn’t negate people who were never passionate about their jobs and only did it as a means of survival. Many people (men and women) would stop working in their unfulfilling jobs if they had another financial means of supporting themselves. I’m pretty sure 70%+ of people who win substantial lottery earnings stop working.

So I guess I don’t really understand the full point this post is making... yeah people don’t work more than they have to if they don’t want to 🤷‍♀️

Gender roles are costly to maintain, especially those assigned to women. Being attractive takes time and money. Ie Hair maintenance, waxing, manicures, workout routines, clothing, facials, manicures, etc. Having kids is costly too and their daily roles in the traditional gendered sense are unpaid. You have to have both time and resources to support this.

Everyone wants to conform to what society says to do in varying degrees and weather or not it’s what makes us most happy, we all experience validation from doing our role well. For men for example, there’s a lot of validation in being able to be the bread winner that takes care of their family and has an attractive wife who doesn’t want for anything.

Being able to chase that is a privilege. It always has been. Poor and working class people don’t have the same luxury. Poor women have always participated in the labor force to make ends meet. To say that what women really want is inequality, less control over their lives, and to live within gendered confines because we see the people with resources doing it is to ignore all of the other factors that go into the decisions people make.

I like working. I mean, I’ve never had a job I didn’t like, even when I was 15 working at McDonald’s I’ve always liked working and seeing the money in my account and knowing I earned that. I’ve got some workaholic tendencies that probably stem from growing up poor and fear of returning to that. So a big blanket of financial security could subdue that fear and kill the workaholic in my head saying shit like ‘you’re only doing your masters and working full time. You could spare another 20 hours a week a get a part time job to save some more. If you stop talking to your friends, dump your boyfriend and sleep 4 hours a night instead of 7 you could complete your masters and do 2 full time jobs and start your own business and run an Etsy store. Oh that’s too much for you? Pathetic’.

Money is a game changer for everyone. Very very rarely do people act the same if they’ve got no money, are middle class or have a lot of money. If my partner made a shit ton, hell yeah I’d stay home to raise my kids. I’d have time to work on my passion projects and hobbies and I’ll always be looking cute. People in that income bracket have cleaners and nannies so it’s not like I’d be doing housework. And whenever I need a break from the screaming kid I’d have a responsible woman to pass it onto. I imagine my mindset about work would change.

Like, they don't actually stay at home. They have people doing all the chores for them, and they travel, engage with hobbies or their own projects, meet friends, write books, and do whatever rich people do. Many have actually very productive lives. Most people just cannot afford to fully engage with their passion if it doesn't make them enough money. Rich people don't need to worry about that.

It's not about gender equality it's about having the means to do whatever the fuck you want.

I like working, I like my colleagues and the independence it gives me. But I wouldn't be working if I had money. I would do a whole lot of things, I wouldn't be bored, but I probably would't focus on a career. despite my career being pretty cool and artistic. But I can do it by myself, better, and without deadlines.

I believe that most women work because they were told to work by society and they must do it for security. Once they have married a man who makes that much money, their work is pointless unless they are also extremely successful.

Since most women hate their jobs (like everyone), they would quit because they no longer need money. IMO this statistic shows how the rich have disproportionately benefited from feminism. They benefit by utilizing the larger workforce, but they still get to give their children ideal childhoods. Just saying.

On a side note, I think think almost all women seek this type of man out, but the man doesn't really look at the woman's finances so she could be poor as fuck meaning any labor she provides would be negligible to their overall wealth.

If you're joint filing your income is going to be way above the higher tax brackets unless you're both earning around the same amount. It's not actually worth having two people working at that point, you don't actually gain anything compared to having one maintain the home and work on non-monetary pursuits.

Top and bottom earners also are more likely to have friends staying home too. It seems like a small thing but if you aren't working what are you doing while kids are in school? My mom was a sahm and she always had friends around that did stuff together. Cleaning and maintenance aren't an all day task, especially if you have a sahp getting militant on kids not being pigs.

I work part time, my husband has been prodding me lightly to sahm since December, but Covid has turned it up a notch. It's all fun and games while I'm basically homeschooling kids and busy, but when things go back to normal? All of my friends work whether they need to or not. Being an isolated loner doesn't sound great, it seems like a recipe for turning into one of those weird moms that are overly invested in everything their kid does.

Men derive satisfaction from working. We need to work or else we feel worthless. Even in hunter-gatherer societies, men went out and did the hunting while women foraged, then went back and waited for the men to come home. What makes you think times have changed? Women don't derive much sense of worth from physically working as they do helping their clan. Being a support role from home is almost entirely in line with their nature, so why work when they're being provided for?

You are talking about doctors, high level attorneys, and executives. These people mostly marry people either in the same field or born into the same social class. You also aren't talking about people in their 20's. The pattern I always see is that somewhere between 30 and 40, most of these women either switch to part time or stay home full time. The hours just don't justify the salary at that point. The women I do see stay employed do something like teaching, although that is phasing out as teacher hours are shooting up.

I remember my wife comforting her friend on the phone for an hour because her kids would refuse to hug her at the door when she got back from work. It broke her heart. It didn't take long after that for her to quit her job. The company was able to snag her back as a part-time consultant so she could have more flexibility. She is much happier now.

Here's a thought- if you're in the 1% top earners, then you're probably a career oriented man, would a career oriented man look for a career oriented woman, that would force him to compromise his career (cuz they will split the household stuff 50-50), or would he prefer one that'd stay at home and do the things he ain't good at/doesn't wanna do? And a woman who sees her place at home, more than in a career, wouldn't she look for someone who would allow her that lifestyle? the fact that there is such a niche, for two "opposites" to find each other, doesn't mean that this is what all (or even most) women (or all men for that matter) would prefer.

I don't how many times that this has to be stated....a woman's career, wealth, status has less than a .0001% impact on a man's attraction to a woman.

Men are looking for entirely different things from women to improve their lives. And it isn't the female imperative to trade off perky tits, tight ass and the V in exchange for a 10 BR mansion in the most prestigious neighborhood, luxury car, status as GF of lead singer in the band or Frat President, invites to the best parties\events or any number of other status\perks which factor into a woman consideration to be attracted to a guy. If guys want any of those things, they go out, work and buy them for themselves.

This is particularly true of attractive or successful men and for the most part, the guys who feel the need for a 'high profile" or "high intelligent" or "high career" GF are in the domain of weaker men who feel that somehow getting that type of woman will improve what others think of them and hopefuly improve their low self-esteem. It doesn't work.

My husband always wanted a SAHW. When we first married we were broke so we both worked.

I changed jobs frequently because I started out in retail and then office work. None provided a livable wage or health insurance.

A few years ago we moved states for his job and I had to quit my job, which was by far the best I had.

Before we moved, in preparation I applied for jobs in the new location via indeed.com. Moved. Three years later, two $9.00 hour jobs, with no benefits, I quit.

Husband told me he preferred I stayed home so I did.

We are nowhere near the income bracket of your post.

The UC does not behave like the MC or LMC. The housewife fits in more with the UC image of prosperity and status. They will drive the same types of expensive cars and live in the same type of expensive neighborhoods. So for them, I suspect the SAHW goes with "keeping up and upping the Jones's).

Because if one person is making enough money, it wouldn't make sense to allocate their resources (in this case time) to make extra money that isn't needed.

It just makes sense for them to not work and do other things whether it's to take care of offspring, go back to school, or whatever.
