I think most men, myself included, support gender equality initiatives, as long as they don't entail discrimination of men, examples being forced maternity leave and gender quotas in corporate boards. No, not every shitty thing that happens is due to the patriarchy, mansplaining or structural sexism.

Why not support it? Everybody loses when women are excluded, economically, culturally and morally.

Most of the feminists men are actually average and below average.

Better than average men are usually sexist, but they can afford it through the Halo effect. Women simply tolerate more shit from good looking/high quality men. Vice versa as well.

Back to the womens rights : Right to vote, right for medical care, right for law system, right for education are all the rights women have and should have. No one tries to take that away.

Actually, law system favours women in many ways.

This is my belief about discrimination Generally speaking:

Most people generally speaking are not racist, misogynist, homophobic, etc actively. Most people aren't going to burn a cross in front of lawn for being in a interracial homosexual relationship.
- But a lot of people hold some of the same beliefs as those that are actively such. So for most people they don't actively seek to enforce their beliefs they accept whatever social order exists that least inconveniences them.

That's all said to say if you get your rights few will really oppose unless the active haters can convince the majority you are a threat.

But we know there are serious repercussions from society for the average Joe and from government if he doesn't. This ranges from backlash from the community, to being fired from his job, or even threat of government force against you.

I don't think I've ever heard of someone getting fired for not supporting women's rights, let alone any government force being used on them.

I strongly support basic neagtive rights for all human beings equally.

When you start labeling a type of right based on subgroup identity it’s usually an attempt to establish a positive right and therefore illegitimate or it’s total BS because the “right” being discussed falls under a broader basic negative right which should be the focus of garnering support.

An example of the former would be women’s “right” to birth control being an attempt to establish a positive (and therefore illegitimate) right.

An example of the latter would be gay marriage “rights” which should fall under the broader rubric of the negative right of the government being prohibited from establishing marriage laws between consenting adults.

'Women's rights' is at this point a rather nebulous term that means different things to different people. That said, to those that think the women's rights movement today is only about preferential treatment, I would counter that to a privileged group, equal (edit: or maybe a better descriptor, equitable) treatment looks like discrimination.

To address the broader question, I would first question whether there is widespread, common consequences for not supporting women. Elected officials certainly face a little more pressure sometimes, although not much. Privately though? Unless you're sending company wide memos with your screeds, it's pretty easy to get away with being a casual misogynist.

I work in power generation as a plant operator, casual misogyny is the norm when the topic of women comes up (I have one coworker that's a woman, on another shift though). In fact, you'll see more pushback against men that don't conform to the 'good ole boys' mode of thinking. Voicing a differing opinion too strongly (this goes for other topics too, like religion and politics) is an easy way to find yourself on the 'outside', and making complaints to HR is a good way to get frozen out by your coworkers and management (who are primarily concerned with just keeping things even keel). The squeeky wheel doesn't get the grease, but the nail sticking up will get hammered down.

Jve seen the outcome of granting women more rights in my lifetime and compared to the generations preceding me it has been positive on the whole. My reasons are mostly selfish: I'm not part of a social elite or incredibly wealthy, more freedom for women means I have greater exposure to interesting and attractive women who act on what they want than some poor girl forced to marry bc she has no other options in life.

I may be wrong, but in America, there is nothing a woman can't do that a man can't outside of maybe religion or other non-regulated activities, and in America, women have more power than men. Think about it like this, what do I gain from it? Not much really, in fact I stand to lose more since equal employability would increase the supply of labour hence dropping the wage, demand and supply. Then there's the fact that I would be giving up my time for this, when would someone ever support something and use valuable resources on something that doesn't do anything good for them?

Think about it like this, there's things happening everywhere in the world- Myanmar, Syria, Israel, yet not many in the west are really interested in it and fair enough, it doesn't effect them at all.

It is always surprising to me how much misogyny there is online.

It's surprising to me how little there is.

It is because these people can say pretty much anything they want without consequences and their identity is kept private.

No, it's because society has given women a lot of privileges and women like to deny that and pretend that men have all the privilege. A lot of men resent that but don't say anything IRL because upsetting people with privilege is dangerous.

This made me think how much the average American man feels about women's rights. If you ask him he will probably say he supports it.

I don't think there's a consistent understanding across average American men what "women's rights" means. I think most men support women's right to vote, and the right for women to work, get a driver's licence, etc. If you're talking about wiping out the "gender pay gap" and how "women have always been the primary victims of war" you're going to get more push back.

You'll have to describe "women's right" because it is to our knowledge that women and men currently have equal rights. Whenever we hear "equal rights" or "women's rights," we hear "special privileges" or "preferential treatment."

Women have just as much right to drive, apply for a job, or start a business as anyone else does. What they don't have a right to is taking the rights of other people away through being granted rights for themselves, nor do they have a right to be picked in a job over someone else, or succeed in economy.

Also, the government does not reprimand anyone for supporting women's rights. Men have no reason to support women's rights beyond the rights that they have already been granted in 1964 when suffragettes fought for women's rights to vote and participate in the free market.

Men are not going to support women being granted rights over men, which has already been happening.

I think this is the key. Men feel like they are under attack for just existing while others can openly attack men. This probably causes some built up anger because they can't express their opinion about anything without being yelled at about not knowing what it is like because you are too privileged to understand anything.

In today's world, women have more freedom than men. They have the freedom to work, they have the freedom to stay home, they do better in college, and they have sex freely available. On the other hand, many men feel like they are just supposed to shut up and work. If they fail, they are essentially useless and should just kill themselves.

The truth is that most people don't even like the politically correct world.
