This is unfortunately the argument against making birth control methods that are incumbent on men instead of women. They just wouldn't fucking do it.

I always love when men complain that their partner made a baby “behind their back”.
I’m always like “Huh? She sedated you, extracted your sperm with a seringe and fertilized her egg with it?”🧐
Babies take two people to make. If you do not take any contraceptive action, you are responsible of the outcome, whatever it is.
I know that I wouldn’t trust a man for contraception.
[–]morguerunnerFDS Newbie128 points129 points130 points 3 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
Literally. I’d love to just throw my hands up and toss my pills in the trash and leave it to the man. God knows I’m sick of artificial hormones fucking up my mood and making me fat. But they have nothing to lose from nutting in a woman with no protection. They’ll just skip out on you and not pay child support. They won’t even wear condoms without fucking whining about it, their idea of taking responsibility for birth control is handing you $20 for Plan B. You simply can’t trust men to do anything in your best interest.
[–]DJSparksalotFDS Newbie27 points28 points29 points 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Female condoms. Throw the pills away.
These definitely aren't popular enough because you really can't trust men not to fuck you over. They're clunky and ugly but once you get them in they're comfortable and safe. Plus you can wear them for hours so if you're not sure if you're getting laid you can just put one in before a date and you're good to go.
[–]rinabeanFDS Disciple7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
They're not as effective as male condoms unfortunately

Hopefully when you have vetted a man according to FDS it's not very likely. And you will know afterwards, and you'll know to get the MAP and never see him again. The extra 3% chance of pregnancy per year worries me more. And because of the nature of condoms, that's also an increased chance of STIs
I think sometimes trying to be safe with men just makes it easier for them to hurt you. :( Get lulled into a false sense of security. That seems to be what happens with low standards generally

I was on hormonal birth control since my first serious boyfriend, 12 years ago at this point. A little over a year ago, I told my partner I wanted to stop my birth control because of shitty side effects, plus my own inability to decide if or when to start a family was driving me crazy and I wanted to just leave it up to the universe and stop over-thinking and over-planning. He told me he would take over birth control, anyway I'm due next month 😂

I just found out the guy I'm dating right now is pretty allergic to cats. (Thanks to discovering FDS, this will be something I screen for on first dates in the future.)
I love cats (and would never give one up for a man). My mom suggested my elderly cat probably wouldn't be an issue longterm if things get real serious with this guy. Then I could just not have cats in the future after my cat passes away.
You know what? Fuck that. Why should I have to give up having pet cats for the rest of my life? No man would ever be expected to give up something he loves to hang on to a girl. If this means staying single longer, then so be it.
(For the record, I'm channeling my inner FDS energy to have a conversation about this with my boyfriend in the near future. He can decide whether that's a dealbreaker for him or not.)

Alregy pills don’t always work on dander allergies. Source: have dander allergies and allergy pills never worked. Still had cats for about 8 miserable years of cuteness. But they often tried to murder me in my sleep by curling up in a ball on my face in the middle of the night.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Keeping them out of your room works amazing for me. I know it sucks not having a cute ball of fur to cuddle with but I rather not have allergies or my asthma act up over cat fur.

this is why i screen for people w animal allergies.
[–]StupidHappyPancakesFDS Newbie38 points39 points40 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
A lot of people don't actually know their allergy status unless they have experienced substantial symptoms or done a formal allergen test. Sometimes allergies manifest in less obvious ways. I've had parrots all my life since I was about seven, and decades later I ended up finding out that I'm extremely allergic to birds! I've also been around dogs a large proportion of my life, and I'm incredibly allergic to them too!
[–]princestarshineFDS Newbie9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Weird! How does it affect you?
[–]StupidHappyPancakesFDS Newbie5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm not entirely sure how those allergies affect me. I've got some autoimmune conditions and thus usually feel not-so-healthy, so that often masks symptoms of other conditions. I did realize after the allergy test, however, that after an extended cuddle session where I'd nuzzle faces with one of my birds, I do immediately get some sniffles and congestion, but somehow I never noticed before! It sucks, though, because on of my parrots is naturally very dusty, and apparently I'm really allergic to dust mites too, and it's like, yeah, no way in hell this house will ever be spotless enough to prevent me from being allergic.

[–]RadarFemefFDS Newbie9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
He's 80% terrible and his advice isn't based in reality, usually. He's gay, white, affluent, male privilege incarnate. He's actually said multiple times that straight men "have it the worst" out of anyone for sex (!!) as if the entirety of media doesn't cater to their sexual interests. He advocates women to be pick-me's, ignore their intuition, and thinks polyamorous relationships are the answer to most modern relationship problems. I could go on...
But on a handful of occasions, he's given good advice, almost as if by accident.
[–]ms_monquisFDS Disciple8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Excellent list. Also: you should just engage your fuckbuddy (not sure he actually even acknowledges one on one relationships anymore) in any fetish they have because, hey, at least they’re not a necrophiliac. While at the same time, espousing that you should leave at the slightest conflict because, hey, there are billions of other people you could be fucking?
Then again, I’m not sure I’ve seen any “advice” columns in recent years that weren’t dumpster fires.

Never take BC pills unless you have a legitimate health reason to
[–]FitncurlyFDS Apprentice163 points164 points165 points 3 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link
We don’t want to discourage women from exercising their reproductive freedom though, and our freedom in society rides on our ability to plan our pregnancies. So in general I agree because side affects can be awful, but also women should feel emboldened to take control of their destinies and bodies and pregnancies.
[–]Throoooowawayyyyy55FDS Newbie57 points58 points59 points 3 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link
I agree that we deserve the right to reproductive freedom but hormonal BC is the worst. You subject yourself to terrible risks so a guy can benefit which is plain wrong.
Condoms, non-hormonal BC (such as diaphragms) or even sterilization are better options.

Right?? I use hormonal BC, condoms, and make my boyfriend pull out. If you’re uncomfortable talking about the logistics of sex with your partner (what kind of condoms do you use? What happens if I get pregnant? Do you want children, ever?) you just shouldn’t fuck. I hate that the pill is being looked at as a loophole for unprotected PIV vs an additional measure for your health.
[–]ms_monquisFDS Disciple9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I had a long term FWB who was otherwise kind of a terrible person. But I will give him +10 for him really forcing this conversation with me. We weren't sleeping with anyone else, and were having the "fluid bonding" conversation. I told him I was covered as far as BC was concerned. He said, "What is it?" I said, "Don't worry about it, I'm covered." And he said, "No, what is it? Look at me, what are you going to do if it fails?" And he made me say out loud what I always knew I would do if the 1% failure happened.
[–]BjorknBeansFDS Apprentice74 points75 points76 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Also, there's some research floating around that hormonal BC actually changes what women will select for in a mate. On BC, women are less likely to choose a male for his sexual attractiveness but rather things like financial stability. When people get off BC they are less attracted to their husbands and end up in a dead bedroom/divorce situation.

I read on this sub today also about clots in young women. It isn't as rare as the leaflets make out apparently. It is a worry for me as I'm on my third Nexplanon implant. I get on with it very well but who knows what it's doing to my body?
[+][deleted] 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
[–]Davina33FDS Newbie0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Not sure why you are telling me that as I've never said not to take birth control. I actually have an auto-inflammatory disorder which significantly increases my chances of getting blood clots. I think you mean to respond to throwaway above me.

Well like I said in my first comment I get on very well with my Nexplanon implant. No weight gain, very infrequent periods which suits me. I'm on my third one now. It isn't unfair to say I don't know exactly what it's doing to my body. I do have hormone issues which isn't helped by an overactive thyroid. I tried the pill many years ago but I didn't like it but I've finally found a contraception that I get along with. I'm on a lot of strong medication like steroids and methotrexate. There is nothing wrong with pointing out some medications have strong and undesirable side effects. For me personally implant is fine but every woman is different.

I’ve researched getting sterilized and read the recovery is 3-4 months. I dislike the experiences I’ve heard about IUDs and condoms break. So I will stick to hormonal BC.

I used to take the pill, but then I got into an abusive marriage where we could afford their $80/wk voice lessons but not grocery money, or a coffee once a week for me, or a little thing of eyeliner, or a new book. Then I decided to switch to an IUD, so I’d be safe for ~5 years. That marriage ended (thank god) and I’m happy with my choice. Getting it put in was painful but my period is way lighter and shorter now and I don’t have to think about BC or taking a pill everyday. It worked for me, I just wanted to tell you a good experience with it in case you hadn’t heard one. No pressure!

That scared me a bit too, but I talked to my gyno about it and she reassured me really well. I trust her, and I’m glad I did it. If what you’re doing works for you, then that’s great! No need to change it up for shits and gigs.

This is anecdotal but I have a hormonal IUD and I love it. It’s a lower dose of hormones bc it’s localized, getting it put in sucked but not much more than a bad period cramp, and now I can barely tell it’s there. Plus for me it made my periods reduce from 7 days of horror to light spotting for like 3 days.
[–]pc_turnipFDS Newbie4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I got a nonhormonal iud and it, too, sucked upon insertion, but my periods don’t hurt at all they just last longer. I was fully prepared for cramps from hell but here I am lol
[–]chinchillen5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I had the non hormonal IUD for 6 years. I always had normal periods until I get it. I began getting my period every 2 weeks, and then began to have it non-stop. My obgyn couldn't figure out why I had it so often. He did blood tests, sonograms, everything. Finally after years he pulled it out and my periods stopped completely. I'm relieved that they did, but it's a whole new worry since I haven't been sexually active in years due to my nonstop bleeding. Please be careful, I know this isn't everyone's experience, but if you have any issues don't wait as long as I did before seeing a doctor.
[–]barbaramanateaFDS Newbie5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
For me I had done a ton of research and realized that Mirena and Skyla are fantastic choices compared to the IUDs of our mother’s generation. Lower doses of hormones, lower risk of device failure, more effective in preventing pregnancy than a tubal litigation yet far more reversible, and 25% of women using mirena including me have their period reduced to spotting or nothing. I know less about non hormonal IUDs but from what I have seen they are also great options. It is truly the best decision I have made for my health ever, and I don’t even have sex with men that regularly.
For period management alone, it is amazing even if it were not also a fantastic birth control method. Because being debilitated for an entire week every month was just not viable for my life. I feel like my hormones are so much better regulated now than they were pre-IUD. I am amazed and often tell my female friends about the wonders, wish I would have learned slightly earlier about this option. Plus it gives me way more privacy about my birth control and cannot be interfered with like pills can by a disapproving family or abusive boyfriend.

I have the Mirena IUD and I haven't had any problems with it. Love not having a monthly period. I'm due to get a new one though and I've debated getting another IUD or trying the implant...as little trouble as I've had with Mirena, it's still not super thrilling to have that piece of plastic inserted into your uterus lol

3-4 months? After a laparoscopy, it usually takes about 1 week. After a mini-laparotomy, it usually takes 1 to 3 weeks, but you really like need to take it easy for a couple of days after getting your tubes tied. Its an outpatient procedure. Ik getting snipped as a guy is easier, but 3-4 months is an exaggeration
[–]Cera3HornIsMyQueen1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I had the Essure implant about 10 years ago. After I got it, there were some reported problems and it's been discontinued since, but I'm very happy with it. No incision, no recovery, no hormones, not reversible. Not a recco of that in particular, but I'd have never even known about it had I not had a conversation with my excellent gyno about non-hormonal options. It's super weird how many women are uncomfortable even having the conversation with their own doctors.

There are “threads” that hang down outside of the cervix. They can be felt sometimes, particularly when you first get the implant. They soften up over time as a membrane forms around them. Or when the threads are cut too short after insertion, they’re pokey.

This is a genuinely important conversation for us to be having.
The Number One thing that lifts women out of poverty is control over their reproduction. This is not controversial.
HOW they control their reproduction is another, secondary conversation. This doesn't make it NOT important. It's too easy to default to the Pill. If that's the only option available, GO FOR IT. But for those of us who have additional options, please do consider them. Have the frank conversation with your doctor or your mom or your peers or whomever you can. This is too often an undercover topic, even to this day. It's a BIG DEAL! This is YOUR BODY! Know your options. Make informed decisions.

Birth control is subjective, what works for some may not work for others. You need to assess the pros vs cons for each method and find what works best for you.
Pills are great for some women and horrible for others, and it kills me when women suffer and continue to suffer taking them just to please a guy when there’s other methods!
