My mom cooked breakfast in bed and did the cleanup for some fat slob every Sunday in a split bill home and the only thing he mustered up on Valentine's Day was a card and $15 grocery store roses. Moral of the story is that most men only know how to take and most women already give more than what they get because of it. Very few men deserve a Valentine's Day "about them" because everything is already about them all the time.

I'm older and have seen so many relationships, I was married myself for 20 years and I thought he was a good one. I thought I also knew at least one other man who was a good husband but since my divorce his wife has been venting to me and he's kind of meh. Which maybe meh is as good as it gets.

Having your marriage explode spectacularly is enlightening. I thought my grandparents had good marriages. Nope. I thought multiple aunts and uncles had good marriages. Nope. Every friend I've ever known? Shit marriage. Women are telling me all kinds of things now.

Men don't deserve shit. They already get way too much. There have been studies done that show even in "equal" marriages, they only pull 35% of the weight. That's equal to a man, 35%. And most men are so much more pathetic than that women even see it as equal too.

So even the "good" men get an extra 15% gifted to them every fucking day. So fuck them. They deserve nothing extra.

My ex-boyfriend didn't even buy me a gift or do anything for me on our first Valentine's together despite telling me constantly how much he loved me. He only promised to get me something when he got my gift in the mail because he "felt like shit for being such a bad boyfriend." Like wow, a card or flowers were so hard to send when he had internet access. A week later I broke up with him and he still hadn't even given me anything at that point lol. I refuse to do anything for a man on Valentine's day anymore.

Fuck that noise. In my pickme days, I've spent an embarrassing amount of money on men who didn't deserve shit. The real kicker of course, was that I used to pride myself on not needing anything myself on v-day, so I'd be seeing myself empty handed whilst women who were valued were bought nice gifts. It hurt, but what did I expect when I didn't even have any self respect and showed just how much of the audacity I was willing to let them get away with to be "picked"?

No. Last Valentine’s Day was the first Valentine’s Day for me and my ex where we could say I love you (he only admitted he loved me 6 months prior and we had already been on and off for 2 years by then. I know but I know better now). I didn’t think after all this time I would have to tell him to get me something. I got him computer parts he needed/wanted, his favorite wine and snacks and wrote a beautiful heartfelt card. He was so surprised. He got me nothing except a last minute, half-assed date to BJS restaurant lmao. I cried in the car. Don’t do it, ladies. Only way I can endorse doing something nice for him is if it’s a very established relationship and he always does loving things for you and even then, you have to hold back.

I honestly completely and utterly hate Valentine’s Day and have refused to have anything to do with it since I was a teenager and I’m 36 now.

I hate the entire concept and premise of the day and all the commercials crap that goes with it. There is not a single part of a man doing things for you on Valentine’s Day that says he loves you or you mean something to him. It’s done because they’ve been told this is the one day a year you should put in a tiny bit of effort and spend money on something overpriced to tell her that you love and appreciate her one day a year.

He should love and appreciate me every single damn day. He should want to get me flowers because I love them not because roses are expected and they quadruple the price on Valentine’s Day. He should want to grab me my favourite chocolate bar at the grocery store not because it’s expected but because he knows I like it and that gesture of knowing he was in the store and thought about me and he knows what my favourite is rather than some box of $15 chocolates in a heart box of mediocre chocolate.

He should want to take me out on a romantic dinner not because it’s expected but because he values me and my time and wants to spoil me with a dinner he planned with a reservation he booked and a meal he will know my tastes to and want to enjoy my time over a nice bottle of wine and great food.

If he needs one day a year to show me what he should be doing every single day. Then he isn’t the man for me.

I don’t have expensive tastes. I buy myself flowers from Costco and like Lindt chocolate. I love a funky pizza restaurant that has a wood burning oven. It takes very little money to make me happy. What it does take is time, effort and paying attention to the details.

Ugh, this reminds me about a tale of two pies between my ex and I.

I made him a from-scratch chicken pot pie with a custom crust design representing his favorite hobby. He made sure to post lots of photos of it on social media for his mom to compliment him on. Not a single photo was of us together or even of me.

Some time later, he decided to make a “special dinner” for me with pie as a dessert. On top of the food not being cooked the way I like (he would always overcook fish even though I told him my preference for medium-rare and it would effectively ruin my favorite meal) the pie was one of those cheap 99 cent grocery store pies that look like a crisco hockey puck. I took a single bite to be polite and then said I was full. He then got mad at me for not liking the pie and dinner that he put so much “effort” into making for me.

And he had a really well-paying job, he could have ordered takeout if he didn’t want to cook, and walk 10 feet across the grocery store from the clearance area to the actual bakery and pick up a nice fruit pie.

Instead he would actively choose to spend the least energy possible on me.
