Sounds like a girl i dated in college. She posted on her Myspace (that's how old i am lol) that she was a strong independent woman, them she left me for her co-worker at McDonald's. She came back like a month later talking about how she realized she screwed up and would i please accept her apology and take her back and oh yeah she needs help making her car payment too.

Got a buddy who recently went through a nasty divorce. He has a kid with her and the judge gave him the state minimum child support of like $480 something but the ex was trying to get him for an additional 1100 a month in alimony. She claimed he was the soul provider for the family and she hadn’t worked in “years”. My buddy provided three different pay stubs for three different companies that showed she made more than him, he showed the judge that she was living at home with her parents and had no plans on leaving and he finally provided to the judge the bank statements that showed she was collecting $2800-ish a month from her GI bill. The judge, in the end, ordered her to pay my buddy $500 a month in alimony. I understand this is the rarest of cases and it probably won’t stay this way but I feel like justice was served, at least for now.

If you choose to get married, prenup all the way. It isn't perfect protection, but it is damn sure better than writing checks to your ex for who knows how long while she lives an unearned life of relative comfort.

I think in some cases it's partly justified - if in a marriage both parties agree that one of them will stay at home and clean the house, raise the kids etc - whilst the other one works - if the marriage then breaks down after a few years then the stay-at-home spouse can't realistically just click their fingers and find themselves in gainful employment overnight - so there should be some sort of payment to support them, but I don't see why (as in some cases) this should last a substantial period of time. There should surely be a limited set of time and after that period elapses the payments cease.

Childcare is obviously a different issue and I think if you've got kids from a relationship it's fairly obvious you should pay your share for their upbringing.

As a woman the state of marriage laws and alimony makes me sick. Maybe its just cause I love my husband so much, but I cannot see in a world where we decided we needed to divorce how I would abandon all my morals just to stick it to him. Its sick, disgusting and morally wrong. I think there should be no such thing as alimony, and that child support should only be instituted in cases where one spouse is taking the majority of the custody, but then we would also have to alter custody laws so they don't favour women so heavily. It makes me sick that other women treat men as disposable playthings instead of the humans they are.

Alimony should be 3 years TOPS and only in extreme cases. No one should pay for your “lifestyle” forever. One year should be plenty for you to get a fucking job, and pay for your own shit. I’m sorry you won’t have the same life as before, but that’s how separation works.

I am going to disclaim here first and foremost that, In no sense at all am I advocating violence. I had this thought today reading a newspaper. (Yeah, I actually do that, LOL!)

I had the sudden realization that the average trial for murder/manslaughter costs so much less than the average divorce with alimony and custody battle with child support. I read the average legal retainer for a Lawyer is roughly 20-50k, whereas I’m seeing horror stories where Men pay upwards of 250k for 18 years of child support, and untold amounts more for alimony and divorce.

Has anyone else had this very sudden realization?

The most egregious example of this I've seen was with a buddy of mine.

He started dating a single mother and within a year they were engaged. I don't know what he saw in her. She was previously an escort and only stopped when she got pregnant with her ex (yes, she dated a guy while escorting).

They got married about a year after their engagement and then got divorced another year later. He loved her kid, and she was totally into the whole "you may not be her father, but you're her dad" thing.

Of course the court ordered him to pay both alimony and child support, but he had no visitation. She brought up the fact that he wasn't even the biological father, which apparently convinced the court that visitation was unnecessary (but child support was).

I would never say I told you so to him, but man... bad decisions all around. Don't date single mothers.

What do we learn? Never get married (luckily growing up with divorced parents ingrained this into me, despite the fact that my father is pro-marriage (he had custody) and tried to convince me that marriage is good...yeah, thanks Daddy, the coolaid don't taste good and I flushed it down the toilet!) and never move in together (to a) not fall under common-law bullshit (luckily that doesn't exist in Germany) and b) don't share any bills with a woman)...I certainly am no woman hater, but I'd rather put a bullet in my head than give someone who is not me (or a relative for emergencies!) access to my bank accounts and my financial well being!

ps: If you can, also live as if you have kids (put that money aside and invest as much of it as you dare, while also keeping an emergency fund (your car might break or your washing machine or your computer etc.))

pps: Also, have a vasectomy if you don't want kids (safer that way, no "I am pregnant and it's your's!" scares...nah lady, sterile (well: Not yet, but before I ever date again!))

If you don't want to pay alimony, then don't let your spouse take time off work to stay home with the kids. They will win alimony 100% of the time in those cases. They will win alimony 0% of the time if they hold their own career during the whole marriage.
