The charity estimates that one in ten rough sleepers in London is a woman.

Statistics from the Department for Communities and Local Government show that half of adults in temporary accommodation are women.

These two sentences really do follow on from one another. Men account for 90% of homelessness, but only get half the available shelter. Wow.

Edit: As per the post by fia_bui below, I have to acknowledge that my conclusion here is not reliable. I conflated "rough sleeper" with "homeless" in my head when I read the article, which means I have compared apples to oranges. There's definitely an issue when 90% of rough sleepers are male, but it may not be the same issue that I first thought.

So it went from ~0% to ~10%.

Such a radical and drastic change in a mere 80 years.

Why by 2100 it may be that as many as 20% of homeless people are women.

This war on women must stop!

Homeless being anything less than 100% male is an inequality and injustice that decent people just cannot tolerate.

They're taking a socioeconomic issue and spinning it as a gender rights issue (for the minority of people afflicted with it). Women have just as much of a right to be homeless as any man.

And anyone who points out that 1 in 10 homeless people being a woman menas 90% of homeless poeple are men is, apparently, "misogynistic".

Which is somewhat baffling; if 90% of the people who are homeless are men, we as a society are obviously failing men far more than failing women.

Treatment can focus largely on practical issues – such as getting homeless people an appointment at the Jobcentre.

Homelessness for men is so easy to fix! Just get them a job despite high unemployment rates. So there's either a carousel of men being homeless and then finding a job and getting off the street and being replaced there by some guy who just lost his job to a homeless person, or it's not so easy a fix

This article highlights another issue of which I'm sure many people here might be aware of - Charities that rely mostly on government funding have to justify that funding by not only keeping their profile high in the public eye but by always painting the worst case scenarios.

The charity Macerlean references in the article - St Mungo's and Broadway - has over 900 staff on the payroll and an annual income and expenditure of about £55 million pounds (c. $85 million US / $99 million CAN / $104 million AUS). Only £6-7 million of that funding is raised through voluntary charitable donations. As far as I'm aware, the rest comes from a government grant.

The temptation to go for the sensational over the factual in order to ensure funding, or else increase it, must be quite strong I imagine.

I think it becomes an issue when a charitable organisation becomes a solution in search of a problem - the parallels of this to Rape Culture activism and funding of women only organisations should not be lost on any one.

Just for the record - I'm not arguing for a strong Libertarian position, I'm not denying the value of homeless charities or of refuges for women and their children who have been victims of violence. But as unpalatable as it may be to say it, the internal logic of any bureaucratic organisation puts self-preservation and continuation above all other considerations.

It's at least one reason why Gender Equality will never be satisfactorily achieved nor Rape Culture ever successfully abolished no matter what demands are met or laws passed. The logic of such a movement means it can never not have heretics in need of burning.

Homlessness is an issue for both genders to some degree appearantly. If the number of homless people of one gender increases we should investigate what made this happen. This definitly is a trend worth noting.

The bigger issue is the part where women get half the shelter although they "only" represent 10% of homless people.

This is important evidence that downtrodden men are ignored while downtrodden women are, quite literally, sheltered by society (and outrage when even a percentage falls through the gaps men are seeping through). The editorialized title however, is quite callous to the actual homeless; just because they are the vast minority of "rough sleepers" are women does not mean any of the homeless' suffering (or any sex) is invalid and of no concern.

I think what's important is HOW the gender gap has been changing.

If "women are catching up with men" means that more women are being homeless, than this is a problem. If they are complaining because fewer men are homeless and this is decreasing the gender gap, well then that's just silly.
