So this isn't a really big or egregious thing, but it definitely hurt. I had a male friend a few years ago, thought he was basically my ideal guy, we were very close friends, he had a girlfriend, I eventually moved to another city for study. Shortly after, I went on a trip overseas and while I was there I bought him a beautiful and fairly expensive silk tie with a particular design I knew he'd love. When I got back he asked me to fly up to see him (thankfully he paid for flights and hotel), and I did, and I got there and we got to the hotel and I gave him this lovely present, and he looked taken aback and kind of embarrassed and I instantly felt humiliated. In that moment my gut feeling slowly rose to the surface and I knew that this would not be going where I so desperately wanted it to. The weekend together was pretty strange and not long after that I cut him out of my life.

A few years have passed and I'm not quite so sad anymore, and of course the present is just one relatively minor part of that big awful pick-me saga, but for a long time I'd think about that gorgeous tie and just cry and want to slap myself in the face for being such a dumb bitch. I'd remembered that he liked that art style, spent a lot of money on him (was on a student budget too), given the present with love to someone I thought cared for me, and ended up playing myself. Before I cut contact, he sent me a photo of him wearing it with a suit to work one day and I cried. It hurts a lot to be a caring person and waste that energy on someone who didn't deserve it. Needless to say I'm a lot more wary and protective of myself now.

Lived with him. I was mommy, maid, and cook for a man who was convinced he did the majority of the cleaning but couldn't even reliably take out trash. I remember recently we were saying shitty things our exes did

I said how my ex would tell me I wasn't good enough for him and I was given deadlines to be good enough or he'll leave me

Everyone stopped laughing and it went silent
