Scruffy aged man (Simon Baker) has a meeting with an "OLD-er" woman. I don't always scroll through the daily mail but when I do, it's posts like these that make me snort. Media is ready to devalue women and put scruffy men on pedestals. The comments call them out.

“Honestly, women should boycott these apps,” said Breanna, 30. “I don’t know what benefit they bring – other than make us more accessible to trash men with bad intentions. I’m telling everyone I know to delete the apps. They’re not worth it and no one I know has met anyone worth a damn on them anyway.”

I’ve deleted all the apps

[–]ironglaciersFDS Newbie 89 points90 points91 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

She's so right.

[–]OnlytheFantastical 23 points24 points25 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

RIGHT?! It’s hard to explain this to people who are not actively in the dating pool. Partnered/married people just assume I have a plethora of quality options because of dating apps. But this author perfectly distilled all the problems with OLD into this single paragraph. Wow.

[–]KimpracticalFDS Disciple 100 points101 points102 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I haven’t used dating apps in years and it’s been great, I’ve never been happier. All the women I know that use them are miserable. It’s because we as women were never meant to put in the effort to find a man, they are supposed to put the effort into us and show us they are interested. Dating apps take that away from us. And for what? We are giving up our precious feminine energy and power for men that are trash. The whole thing is an abomination against humanity lol

[–]AnniaTFDS Disciple 19 points20 points21 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I deleted too. I live in another country alone in a place very difficult to meet people so I though that apps were the only way to find someone. Deleted all that mess and still found my boyfriend organically anyways. I never had a good experience on the dating apps, just low effort men that never got nowhere.

[–]electroloopRuthless Strategist 134 points135 points136 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Dating apps are a meat market for cheap, LVM to get free, easy sex.

“Free and easy” through manipulation and coercion. Do you think 90% of men on apps have the courage to approach a beautiful woman? Fuck no.

[–]Equal-Ear2312FDS Apprentice[S] 376 points377 points378 points 4 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

very good article by Nancy Jo Sales:

No, dating apps didn’t invent misogyny or womanizers. But they did give straight men – unvetted men – unfettered access to women. They gave them a new sense of boldness through a seemingly endless set of options. They gave them the ability to decide with the flick of a finger whether a woman was “hot or not” enough for them to date or have sex with. They gave them the ability to create false identities who can’t be held accountable.

[–]TheMostOfMe 229 points230 points231 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yep it gave them THE AUDACITY

[–]slothvegas 95 points96 points97 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

LOL, yes! And they had plenty of it to begin with!

[–]mashibeansFDS Apprentice 70 points71 points72 points 4 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Wow, this is similar to "the shopping cart test," and men fail at it horribly.

Basically this test can show whether you're a good or bad person. Returning a shopping cart to its designated spot is not required, no one really will call you out on it, and it can be a bit of an inconvenience.

These apps are basically a chance for men to harass and objectify women with practically no consequences, but it's entirely 100% their choice to do so. That so many men actually take the option, says a lot about men.

(Also, same with those Craigslist ads from men, wanting a woman to be his pr0stitute, maid AND pay him "reduced rent." Those men know, and want to take advantage of poor, desperate women anyways)

[–]akashyaboaFDS Newbie 17 points18 points19 points 4 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Returning a shopping cart to its designated spot is not required, no one really will call you out on it, and it can be a bit of an inconvenience.

I mean you're losing money if you don't return it... I doubt LVM wouldn leave a euro our of laziness

[–]mashibeansFDS Apprentice 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

LOL this test makes sense in the context of not having the coin system... I do wish in the areas where I live there was one, just to keep people from being such lazy dickheads.

[–]akashyaboaFDS Newbie 12 points13 points14 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Whaaaat? There are places that don't use money ? I am shocked that someone has so much faith in people

[–]ububTkucFDS Newbie 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I live in the US - a culture that worships greed and capitalism. I have never put down a deposit for a shopping cart. Must be a European thing….

[–]mashibeansFDS Apprentice 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think it's less about faith in people, and more about not wanting homeless people to loiter the parking lots, asking to take your cart so they can get the coin. Not that I'd know personally, just what I heard.

[–]akashyaboaFDS Newbie 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They made me feel depressed whenever I used them. No more. Haven't touched them since summer 2020 and I never will again.

[–]melympiaFDS Newbie 92 points93 points94 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I can't help myself... Quote from the linked article:

Back in 2015, I wrote a story for Vanity Fair entitled Tinder and the Dawn of the Dating Apocalypse

I think we need to rename this to Dating Appocalypse. (Only partially because of the pee-pee...)

That being said, though, I don't use dating apps, nor do I plan to.

[–]deeper-discussion 53 points54 points55 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nancy is amazing, not only is she making issues transparent, but she’s a spokeswoman for us all

[–]JulyParadeFDS Newbie 243 points244 points245 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I stopped using OLD when I realized it was turning my goal of seeking a relationship into a validation video game. If you're dating a guy from OLD with any self-esteem issues he's going right back on the apps the moment you don't give him a sufficient "gratitude dance" for doing the bare minimum.

[–]howlsmovingcactus 91 points92 points93 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep, great point! There's always someone waiting to take your place if you don't act like the perfect girlfriend according to their delusional, self-serving standards.

LVM and NVM take what they can get from vulnerable women on these apps. I find it hard to believe that even the ones who say "looking for something serious" will turn down the chance to swap nudes, have a one-time hook-up, or even do FWB just to get over you... their options are almost unlimited.

Of course, that outlook obviously shapes how much time, money, and emotional energy app-addicted scrotes place into dating you (and you as a person)...

That's why one of the biggest OLD red flags is a man saying "I'll get this one, I guess," or grumbling about paying for the first date, or if he immediately starts talking about splitting future dates.

It's a HUGE tip-off that he's obsessed with the apps and having as many options as possible, so he wants to make sure his sad wallet is secure enough for him to roam.

[–]Kitty_PompousFDS Newbie 117 points118 points119 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Man you hit it on the head. The most emotionally stunted human beings I have ever met. Constant constant self-pity in the hopes that his boo-hoo sob story that feeeeemales treat him so bad will embolden you to mop up his tears and be his new mommy. Guys would leave old within a week of speaking with me and then when I responded insufficiently to sob stories and bare minimum gestures and invitations to turn it sexual, it was back to the drawing board to look for a new bang-mommy

[–]RaccoonSweaty3741 12 points13 points14 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

He will go back no matter what to push his ego and see how many he can get. You are still assuming there is any level of logic attached to their behaviour in the sense that you can influence it. They don't care if they are in a happy relationship. It is a thought the'd rather not have, postpone or push aside to continue being on the lookout. The fact he already got you renders you boring in his mind no matter how long it took. Men on dating apps are addicted to novelty. Their primitive instinct is telling them they are impregnating a lot of women. They are addicted. They are living in a real life Disneyland for gown men. They are only going to stop once they stop having success there.

[–]Unlikely-MarzipanRuthless Strategist 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Very true. As they say, dating apps and social media are a narcissists playground.

Not saying all people who use OLD or SM are narcissists, but that there are many predators online and those apps make it easier for them to find prey.

[–]mostdefinitelyntursFDS Newbie 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I love how they have a primitive instinct to impregnate; but not to provide

[–]MsXxSelfDestructxXFDS Newbie 36 points37 points38 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I have such mixed feelings about OLD but mostly negative because I feel gross putting myself into the pile of options for the gross men local to me to gloss over my bio. But at the same time, I'm naïve and want to hold onto some glimmer of hope that maybe I'm missing out on a good fun, positive time meeting someone HV by chance.

[–]Equal-Ear2312FDS Apprentice[S] 63 points64 points65 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

men have told me how they feel about old: it's like window shopping. they see women as nothing but meat. the "connection" is superficial: he either likes her looks or doesn't. most men don't even read the bio. most men immediately ask to change the platform or the app. most men get sexual with innuendos and dick pics the very same day.

they think that there's a sort of "understanding" that the app is solely for sex. some men laughed at me when I told them I was looking for a deeper connection. if you explain you want a committed relationship, some men will lie and tell you what they think you want to hear in order to get into your pants. some can even take their sweet time. it's all a game to them. for women, it's like playing minesweeper, only here's no logical next step.

[–]_cnz_FDS Newbie 53 points54 points55 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It’s very funny that they use a black women as the cover picture for the article. As a black women myself, I’ve gotten so many disgustingly racist and sexual comments across all dating apps when I used them. I had no provacative pictures on my accounts and would usually get these comments as the first messages, so I was not inviting this behavior at all. I thought this was a normal thing for most women until I went on my Asian friends’ accounts. Not only did they not get any such comments, they received super likes by the hour and we’re constantly engaged in genuine conversations with the men the matched with.

In the end, my account was banned bc I was reporting scrotes too much and I’ve never looked back. These apps severely damaged my self esteem and made me believe that if any person liked me, I was nothing more than a racial fetish to them.

[–]BrightIdeaGeneratorFDS Newbie 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Geez that is so awful to hear, I'm sorry. I also deleted the apps but I can't believe you got BANNED.

I went out on a Valentine's weekend (2 days before the 14th which was a Monday) date with a man (47) who I had been talking to through Hinge for a couple weeks. We had good banter and he sent voice notes in addition to texts. He arrived to the date with a Valentine's gift of mini teddy bears, chocolate, and homemade cookies. I was tickled pink. We then had a lovely dinner and he drove me home (it felt safe enough to do so). During dinner we talked about dating and he admitted that he was "addicted to swiping" and thinking to himself while looking at photos "Oh you're gorgeous, but you're gorgeous too *swipe swipe* I wander what's next?!". I was a little shocked but not surprised. Anyways, we texted more after the date and then the next day I didn't hear from him. He had told me he was hosting a Superbowl thing for the boys so I didn't think I would. Then actual Valentine's day I didn't hear from him either. Odd. Tuesday I realized that I had tickets to a movie he would really like so I reached out to invite him. His reply? He said I was right that I should have heard from him earlier but he didn't "feel strongly enough to more forward". How could he ever feel strongly enough after one dinner and when I'm competing against a fantasy woman who is only ten swipes away?

I love Nancy Jo Sales. ♥️ I remember reading her article on I think it was Tinder and the dawn of the dating apocalypse a while back. She always spoke the truth and continues to do so in a world that continues to normalize the traumas and horrors of online dating for women. Thanks for sharing the article, it was an enjoyable and validating read.

[–]bambiedgehills 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I love her too. Her book is awesome. We’ve chatted a bit on Instagram and she is very much FDS 🥰

[–]Hungry_dogs 12 points13 points14 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I can't do dating apps anymore. In all honestly, most forms of communication with men I had tried to end. There isn't a point.

Everytime I speak with a man I just get reminder why I should avoid them and focus of myself.

[–]corkymuu 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The internet in general seems to bring out the worst in men. They no longer have to hide their true nature.

[–]ProgramUnfair4738 10 points11 points12 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I live in a very rural area, so I feel like OLD is my main option. But earlier someone outright asked me for sex on the third message. And another guy tried hitting on me using a Harry Potter reference. I love Harry Potter, but I’m also in my thirties so I expect more from my interactions with fully grown men.

The whole OLD scene near me seems to move in peaks of potential suitors galore followed by troughs of scrotes who immediately tell on themselves. Right now, the obvious scrotes are out in force. It’s depressing. And because I’m finding it depressing I’m considering ditching it altogether while I do some more work on myself.

[–]awhileagonowFDS Newbie 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm in the same position: rural living, nowhere/no how to meet men given that this can't happen through my work and I don't have a network/community to help. However, I have opted out of the apps. Having considered my options I decided it was too much of a timesink for very little reward, and I can't be doing with the relentless cynicism from men on the apps. They are either being crass or bitching about women or outright lying about their situations and intentions. It's not good for my (anyone's) mental health. Obviously this means never dating, ever, and I live in hopes someone will invent some radically woman-friendly dating platform that screens out the detritus before it gets anywhere near, like they can't even join, let alone swipe or send a message. How good would that be?!

Dear Scrotes. Dating Isn't a Men Rights Issue. And YOU PROVED just Entitled and privileged you are. Morons.

[–]savagegardenn 119 points120 points121 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I would absolutely never use a dating app if I were in college, in a hip neighborhood, or in my 20’s. But with careful, ruthless vetting, it’s probably the most convenient way for women in their 30’s to meet a lot of men quickly. Just stick to the handbook. Only “like” guys who meet your standards, and unmatch the SECOND they turn you off. They are definitely shopping for sex. If they neg you, want to move off the app, are too eager to meet, NEXT. Dating apps are not for 27 year old me. But at 36, I know they’re competing for me, against myself enjoying my own company. And as soon as a message isn’t fun to read, bye boi!

[–]OriginalCanConFDS Newbie 87 points88 points89 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, I met my dude on tinder when I was thirty! His photos though were of him dressed nicely, at family weddings, or with his (now also my) amazing cat. No stupid pictures with the boys or with his car. Never once did he turn the conversation sexual, and as I'm a teacher, I found almost every single other dude tried some stupid hot for teacher line on me that grossed me out (oddly enough, I don't find the idea of teenage boys who are under my care to be attracted to me appealing? Who would've thought!). He was kind, respectful, asked me to dinner, and refused to let me pay when I offered (I was in my pre-fds days!!) you have to have ruthless standards on apps otherwise you'll just get saddled with garbage humans.

[–]Show-me-the-sea 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Gosh I learnt so many lessons on dating apps. I was single and started a new job. It was a flurry of dates as I assessed their interest on the first date. Any warning signs whatsoever and I was out of there.

Then I fell hard and yep - as most of these comments and the article described - found the worst one. So I left for months and focused on me.

I tried one more time at the insistence of a friend. Happy to say I found a good one. We’re married and have kids now.

[–]dualita 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Has anyone seen a trend of women promoting these apps because they found their boyfriends there? They promote it like they are getting paid for it and I'm done with this.

I like video games but I know that they are not everyones piece of cake and I don't shove it down everyones throat.

[–]NotMyRealName814At-Risk Pick Me Youth 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I know that I'm pretty old and out of touch but finding a relationship through dating apps has never had any appeal to me at all. I've never created a profile on any of them. I'd rather meet a man through work or mutual friends or hobbies. Sure, you run across many men who are trash but you can see them right away for what they are and do so many times before you even go on an actual date. I realize that these apps are not going anywhere but for me, personally, they just hold zero appeal.

[–]Equal-Ear2312FDS Apprentice[S] 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

all women are simply gambling with a dating app. but after 30 is russian roulette. not because of some wall but because most men on dating apps think there is some wall but only for women.

[–]jijitsu-princessFDS Newbie 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I keep hearing polyamory repeated by men who use these dating apps. It’s because they now think they have multiple options.

[–]These-Ad-5925 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I see online dating as the equivalent to internet trolls, I guess that’s basically the simple answer to this. It gives them the ability to hide behind a screen just as internet troll would 🤷🏽‍♀️. So if they say something out of pocket, that screen basically acts as their defender; they can easily brush off their out of pocket statements as you just misinterpreting the text…potentially just you being crazy. The list goes on. Scrotes will scrote wherever they can !

[–]forestbunny-287 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Deleting my dating app was the best decision I made recently! So much less stress and distraction.
