have a divorced uncle. during the divorce process his ex-wife quits her job as a hair designer to become a school bus driver just so she can report a lower income and get more alimony/child support. she treated my cousin like shit but because he was too young to legally be allowed to choose which parent to live with he was forced with his mom. he buys a car, she wrecks it. she kicks him out of the house 3 times cuz she's pants-crappingly insane but still ordered to receive $$ from my uncle.

edit: 12 was once the age for a child to choose (maybe outright), but that is no longer the case. the original info i received was from someone who moved out of Ohio a decade prior so that may account for it

in grade school my friend's (we'll call him Sam) mom and dad got divorced. she got custody, and had child support payments from his dad. When Sam turned 18, she was still getting child support for him, because he lived with her still for a while and was in high school. but almost immediately after graduation, he moved to live with his dad out of state. the state still required the dad to pay child support the mother for supporting him. I'm not sure if that was a paperwork error or what, but they demanded he still pay. so she got a bunch of money for couple months. when Sam went home for a visit and demanded the money that she fraudulantly got that was actually for him, an adult, she refused to give it, and the state allowed her to keep it. and this is despite her no longer paying ANY expenses for Sam, who was again, out of state and living with his dad, who also was paying for his college IN ADDITION to what she got.

Stories: they have two sides.

I have a child from a previous marriage and a few months before my child's third birthday my ex told me that he wanted nothing to do with our child and that he wasn't ready to be a father, then ran off to Las Vegas to lead a drugged out, alcoholic party life style. I was upset at first, but since he saw our kid only once a month and was contributing absolutely nothing financially for the past half year, I got over it.

I accepted the fact that he didn't want to be a father (Though I still thought it was fucked up.) and I let him go. Scott free. Didn't file for support, didn't bother trying to find him. Just continued taking care of my child along with my current fiance who has been the only Daddy she has known since she learned to say "Daddy".

Fast forward 4 years and while attending court-appointed rehab, it suddenly occurs to my ex that he is now ready to be a father. He Takes me to court for visitation and after a few hearings, they grant it. Never-mind the fact that he has been absent, or that I have written proof of him basically begging me to give her up for adoption to save him any financial responsibility.

The following month I take him to court for support and I am granted $31 a week and NO back support because I didn't file back in '07. I went without fucking work shoes just so that my kid had shoes of her own. And when I got home at 3am dead tired, I fucking went to bed hungry so that my kid could have the rest of her favorite cereal for breakfast. Every expense my kid had came before my own and as a result I suffered. Not her, me. Which is what a real parent does.

So yeah, if the courts didn't completely fuck me over and gave me even the measly $31 a month he's owed for almost 5 years while I busted my ass serving lewd drunks, moping floors and scrubbing dishes alongside my fiance who busts up his body day after day as a carpenter while my ex-husband played fun-time nomad artist looking for the next high while his parents wired money to him; then yeah I'd buy myself some fucking shoes too. Hell, while I was at it I'd buy my fiance some work boots as well.

This means I spend money on a winter coat for him, and new shoes, and a hunting license, and karate lessons, and a driver's permit. You know, things he actually needs and things that are good for him.

Yes, but not all men pay child support. In this case, yes the recipient is an idiot. My own father avoided helping us as long as he could, and now my stepsons father avoids paying for his child as much as he can. So let's say Kudos to this Father who pays.

It's obvious that a better method is needed. I have tried suggesting that the SRS set up trust funds for the child. One trust for each child. Then either or both parents pay into this trust. The parents' only access of the money is by presenting a receipt to the SRS office for reimbursment. Excess money in the trust becomes the child's upon their 18th birthday.

I'm not saying that's right (especially bragging about it), but another way to look at it. If she has sole custody, the money used for herself is going completely to support that child. With the child support, she can use income for her own well being as well as take care of the child's needs.

In my experience, my father provided nothing but some baby sitting when I was a kid. My mother and her family took care of my education, clothing, food, medical care, and other needs. To give to me, she did without.
