OP had a consensual encounter with a girl who initiated it. Now she is saying he took advantage of her which is ruining his reputation and is now concerned about being criminally charged. She will obviously be beloved because she’s a woman.

Firefighters in China are overwhelmingly Chinese and male.

Fire fighters in India are overwhelmingly Indian and male.

A nation that’s overwhelmingly one race is going to employ a lot of that race.

Why men?

Probably because women, unable to pull a person out of a fire, don’t want to be the reason that person dies.

Edit: took out a nonsensical and rogue ‘an’

[+]hindusach1 points 7 years ago* [recovered] (9 children) | Copy Link

More than just putting one's life at risk, because the job *requires* you to be able to carry 90+lbs of gear up the stairs of a high rise building. There are just not that many women who can pass the physical requirements necessary for the job.

[–]jaheiner 131 points132 points133 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Lies, it’s only heavy cause of patriarchy and privilege.

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points37 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Exactly! Women are just as strong as men but they are socialized as young children to not carry heavy things or engage in physically demanding task.

It's all scientific. The Gender Studies course proved it. end/sarcasm

[–]onbakeplatinum 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This was literally in Anita Sarkeesian 's thesis.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I couldn't make this shit up (because I'm not insane)

[–]theBrineySeaMan 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I know it's a joke, but that could be a factor. I work with a lot of women who just ask men to lift for them when they get a heavy load, but I used to work with women who took their own heavy loads with proper form. Obviously carrying one heavy load won't make you stronger, but doing it every day probably will.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Actually it's not a joke. It's one of the theories that the gender warriors use. They think gender is just a construct and that women are socialized to be weak and if not for that they would be just as strong as men.

I'm sure if women work out they will be stronger but you can put an infant female in overalls and give her trucks and blocks and set her outside in the dirt and she won't grow up to be as strong as a boy. Whatever parity she may have before puberty will disappear as soon as her boobs show up and his pubes grow out.

[+]landon9121 points 7 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

We should lower the test requirements below those of the actual job for women. /s

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points19 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They already do that.

That's what they meant by "equal pay for equal work".

She's a firefighter and therefore that's equal work. Doesn't matter that she can't do the job. No problem, they'll move her up to management pretty quickly so they can keep their gender quota up to politically correct levels.

[–]AKnightAlone 11 points12 points13 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Maybe we can make female versions of tools and suits that can cater to their delicate nature.

[–]Dracci 154 points155 points156 points 7 years ago (39 children) | Copy Link

The post is so fucking stupid. What are we going to lower standards and make hiring quotas for firefighters now? Are you fucking kidding me? As someone who lives in Socal, no one (who isn't a complete fucking moron) would want diversity hires doing this job. So what, were going to have underqualified minorites and women trying to put out forest fires that are literally threatening entire counties and thousands of people's livelihoods just so we don't offend some random cuck on the internet? This person should be euthanized.

[–]SwordfshII 97 points98 points99 points 7 years ago* (28 children) | Copy Link

We do for military.

Statistically out of 10 men going through Ranger school 6 make it.

With the 10 person female squad 2 made it.

The Army gave up 4 qualified Rangers so women could play soldier.

But they sign up for Selective Service too right?

[–]patraicemery 67 points68 points69 points 7 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Not to mention the physical fitness standards are miles apart in the Navy. I dont trust a single female to save me from a burning or flooding compartment.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 48 points49 points50 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I remember in Navy boot camp overhearing some girls complaining how tough the mile and half run is. They said they wished they had my legs(I'm 6'4). I just looked at them and reminded them I had to lap them 3 times (on an 1/8th mile track IIRC) to pass.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I’m a little bit overweight and even I think a mile and a half is easy. Don’t know if there’s anything else in that race but if it’s just running, it’s really not that hard

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Mile and half run after doing the situps and pushups. It really isn't hard if you're mildly active. I was fairly sedentary before getting there plus I hurt my leg and still ran it before I was fully healed. I was motivated to get the hell out of there as it was boring as hell, but some people seem content to milk it for 6 months before they run out of chances.

[–]stumpdawg 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

when i used to run i could do a mile in 7.5minutes. id jog a minimum of 2mi at a consistant 8mph (tredmill. id hop on and hold the up button until i hit 8mph)

im five foot fucking two. dont give me that long leg crap ladies, move your legs faster...its what i do.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

To be fair, I have the legs of someone who was like 6'7 or 6'8. I have a normal torso. When I was recuperating and just walking distances I would keep pace with some of the slower runners.

Those poor guys, the instructors would make fun of them for the hurt guy walking as fast as they were running.

Of course my injuries crept back to me a couple years later. During the semi annual fitness test I started running and felt so pain I had to walk most of it. I barely failed, but got a "good" score on the female scale. Despite the xrays showing my leg had broken and healed incorrectly they put me on the remedial fitness program requiring me to do PT everyday-which I couldn't do except the bike because of my leg.

It was then I realized that the fitness test is a mere charade. It's window dressing to ensure manning requirements are met, but it can stand to be far lower too. It's lowered during major wartime, and it's kept low for women simply to have a politically acceptably minimum number of women in the armed forces.

Don't let the "minimum level of fitness" crowd fool you. Men have 40% more upper body strength than women, but have to do twice as many pushups and for the marines 6 pullups compared to women's zero. Men are about 15% faster runners on average, but have to be 20-30% faster on the test.

Hell even body fat allowances are stupid. In the Navy it was a max of 22% for men, 33% for women. Now women do have more body on average but 22% for men is on the high end for being physically fit, while 33% for women on the low end for being overweight to obese. If a similar expectation for women was made than is for men, the max for women would be 26-28%.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The navy used to have 2 man stretcher bearer teams. Now they've increased it to 4 "person" teams because women can't carry a man unless there are 4 of them.

This essentially doubles the manpower needed to rescue injured sailors. That's okay, they'll just have to put more sailors on the ships.

Of course, they'll already have a "casualty" rate before combat even starts because the high number of women that get pregnant while on ship deployments or before deployments.

USS Acadia: "This was the first wartime deployment of a mixed male-female crew on a U.S. Navy combat vessel. Just over one third of her crew were women, which caused some controversy when during the course of the mission 1 in 10 of the female crew either became pregnant or discovered they already were."

That means 3% of the crew had to be airlifted out of the ocean and back stateside before a single shot was even fired. That's about 10,000$ per sailor all at taxpayer expense.

[–]patraicemery 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"discovered they already where"

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's worse that than because if a deployment is coming a lot of women suddenly "accidentally" get pregnant. Their deployment is cancelled and then many get reassigned to stateside duty and have an abortion.

During the Obama Administration a general wanted to start punishing women for disabling themselves from combat (just like they do for men) and the feminists made a call to Obama and he made them change it and then the General "retired".

[–]Thr0w4w4y757746 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I feel like women should have to sign a document promising not Tom for pregnant whilst employed by the military or face heavy fines and immedient dismissal.

[–]Robfu 8 points9 points10 points 7 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Co-ed is tricky, when I was in BCT in 2012 there was a lot of sexual misconduct between the recruits, between privates and DS, etc...

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 15 points16 points17 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

You can have the same fitness standard and separate living quarters.

[–]Robfu 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

we had separate living quarters, that doesn't stop the sex from happening

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Sure, but sex happens with gay soldiers too.

[–]Robfu 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Luckily they dont get pregnant and it's less of an issue since there aren't a huge group of horny men chasing the gay guy around and banging him and fighting over him. But yea it's similar.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's funny since like clockwork within a month of a scheduled deployment there would always be an uptick of pregnancies.

Hell a general in Iraq was so frustrated with how many people were injuring themselves purposely or getting pregnant on purpose just to get sent home he started cracking down on it, and there was only a backlash against disciplining the women.

[–]3-10 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I am so grateful I went through Benning and it was single sex at the time.

[–]ColdIceZero 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I was just down at 30th in Oct. I didn't see any female recruits.

[–]3-10 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was in 1/46 at the top of the Hill by 1/50th. I also jumped at Fryer.

[–]Steeped_In_Folly 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I stared at the math in this post for four long minutes trying to figure it out. It makes no sense to me. Can you elaborate please thank you

[–]neonsphinx 10 points11 points12 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Each class at ranger school is only so large, there are only a certain number of classes each year. Without paying for more barracks, instructors, etc. which we aren't doing, at least not right now.

Ranger school is a good course that provides valuable should and experience to Soldiers.

So by pushing female Soldiers through, there are less Soldiers getting that training each year. Because the females are less efficient at graduating the course than the men are.

[–]Steeped_In_Folly 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I get all of that. I’m talking about the math. 6 in 10 of men make it, 2 out of 10 of women make it and then something about how that takes away 4 jobs from men? I don’t get the math.

[–]MadlifeIsGod 12 points13 points14 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

He's saying if you replaced the 10 women with 10 men you would get 6 passing. Since you only get 2 it's 4 soldiers not qualifying.

I agree to an extent, we shouldn't have lower standards for women, but if they can meet the same requirements as men they shouldn't be excluded.

[–]Grasshopper21 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They literally can't meet the same standards. we've already proven that.

[–]comisohigh 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

if you have only 20 slots available for ranger school, the new PC rules states that there shall be 10 men and 10 women. 6 men make it and only 2 women make it. However the chance to pass Ranger school, before PC rules, is 49%. If there were only 20 men trying out then it would mean that 10 men would pass, instead the women take up the remainder and throw the odds off.

https://mwi.usma.edu/challenge-ranger-school-can/

[–]Steeped_In_Folly 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh okay now I get it. Yeah that is insanely dumb.

[–]ChefBoyAreWeFucked -3 points-2 points-1 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Statistically out of 10 men going through Ranger school 6 make it.

With the 10 person female squad 2 made it.

Do you honestly think 100% of male entrants are qualified, but some are getting rejected to make room for women? Your math also requires that 66% of applicants be female to work out.

[–]xbroodmetalx 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is pretty dumb. I would also like to be able to read the actual article. Ya know, for science.

We have lowered the standards here in Canada, simply for the cucks and libtards to feel good about themselves. No fucks given to potential victims and these women inability to perform basic functions like kicking in a door or carrying dead weight.

[–]Syrinx16 7 points8 points9 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Canadian “libtard” here. I don’t agree with it either, I’d rather have a smaller more elite force than a large and less trained one. Also try not to group your fellow Citizens as Cucks and libtards, it’s not very Canadian of you. You see how divided and fucked up the USA is? This is the type of rhetoric that we need to stamp out here because name calling is for children and Xbox live.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I see what I see. And if being Canadian means being the only type of Canadian you like, then I'll pass thanks.

[+]hkl8324 -19 points-18 points-17 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

This applies to everyone fucking job on earth. Women are not qualified to do most of the jobs.

[–]Ardillon85 18 points19 points20 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I would not say that women are not qualified for most jobs because that is simply not true, but, there are jobs that require, endurance, strength, commitment and a lot of physical traits that women either don't have or do not care to have and so it is in everyone's best interest to leave those jobs to men that are in fact able and qualified to do them. Political correctness and women rights movements are sometimes simply idiotic. There are things that women are not physically nor emotionally able to handle and that is fine otherwise they would not be women anymore.

[–]hkl8324 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I dont mean not qualified with respect to the bottom line, I mean not qualified with respect to their more qualified male co-workers. When you hired a woman, you dropped a more qualified man. And that is true for almost every profession.

Men always outdone women coworkers but they are still equally paid. For everyone cent you pay a man, his outcome maybe 1 unit. And for women, that is always lower than 1. That is the true meaning of my "not qualified"

[–]pacmatt27 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I mean that's just total bullshit. This isn't the place to be a sexist cunt.

[+]Stunner900 -57 points-56 points-55 points 7 years ago* (29 children) | Copy Link

Mainly a lot of minorities don’t qualify.

[–]ddl_smurf 42 points43 points44 points 7 years ago* (25 children) | Copy Link

what ? why ? [citation needed]

Out of the bat I think that's wrong, I don't imagine a causality behind your hypothesis. It's not about minorities, this is a case of sexual dimorphism it seems

[+]Stunner900 -22 points-21 points-20 points 7 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link

When one wants to become a firefighter they need to meet requirements .

One of the main ones which is not having a serious criminal record.

[–]Sawses 12 points13 points14 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What percentage of non-white males have a disqualifying record, do you think? Personally, I'm more inclined to believe it's because the USA is 70% white. Plus, rural areas employ the vast majority of firefighters...and most rural areas are way more than 70% white.

[–]demonryder 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, my thought was that the need for fire fighters scales not just with population, but with area as well. So sure you will have a lot of non white firefighters in the big cities, but not enough to proportionally represent whatever minoroty is being looked at when there is a ton of the US that's mainly white and is going to have white firefighters.

[–]ddl_smurf 19 points20 points21 points 7 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

I'm sorry you're being down-voted, I appreciate and welcome your describing your opinion, that it is not a common opinion here should be less important than your making the effort to share and in so doing, inviting conversation and challenge. It's laudable and I salute for it.

[–]Stunner900 20 points21 points22 points 7 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

I apologize for sounding racist. The fact is statistically minorities have a higher crime rate. Because of this they have trouble getting jobs.

[–]SirSkeptic 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My understanding (and I might be wrong) is that Chinese, German, Italian, Greek, Japanese, Vietnamese and Korean minorities have a vastly lower crime rate.

Or is there an elephant in this room I'm not seeing.

[–]ddl_smurf 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Everyone is racist at some level, that's just how the brain works, it's a pattern matching device in the end. My point was that it's unclear which way that works, maybe the high crime makes it hard to get a job, maybe the hard to get a job makes the high crime

[–]patraicemery 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's not racist at all. I am a volunteer firefighter and live in a very heavily minority populated area. It is not unusual for us to have 30+ people apply to join and come to an orientation and nearly all of them are inelgible due to a crime committed in the past. It's the reality of minority neighborhoods and is something that needs to be addressed by those minorities community leaders.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

So how about you link a source with those stats, instead of linking a website that mentions nothing of race or crime statistics.

[–]tricks_23 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Oh c'mon, it's not like those stats are either contested or difficult to come across, it's a rather inconvenient truth that's widely known.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_and_crime_in_the_United_States

That says whites commit 1.5x more non-weapon assults than blacks, and almost 3x more than Hispanics. Crime statistics - assaults.

So...... you got some stats?

Now think of this also. We don't care about the gun violence stats, because gangbangers aren't aspiring to be firefighters.

We're looking at druggies, drunks, and abusers. To say that out of those three groups minorities have to lead the numbers is just inherently racist.

I would cite the plain 'crime in the US' Wikipedia. I know "per capita" rates aren't a popular thing, but I think it's important when general ethnic makeup of the US is so overwhelmingly white. Simple numbers will always favour white simply because there are more of them.

I'm not saying that minorities commit crime simply out of some kind of genetic disposition. Just it seems to be disproportionately high with minorities, which is a shame. But in professions where lives are being saved, I don't care about quotas of any kind.

[–]ddl_smurf 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

none of those requirements includes "also there should be a category you can be placed in that is not an average majority in x population" that would be so weird

[+]Stunner900 -10 points-9 points-8 points 7 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link

I didn’t mean to have race involved in the hiring, that was my mistake. I mainly meant that a lot of minorities have a serious criminal past that makes them disqualified.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Citation on Fire Fighting still needed. I know plenty of men that have criminal records but work in government jobs such as this one. Please use citations for your facts if you're going to say something like this is true.

[–]ddl_smurf 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Neither of us mentioned race, but I understand the amalgam, this is a franc and cool moment of exchange cause it's rare when our brain lets us expose and thus discover bias. You are correct that minorities are disproportionately represented in criminal activity, but, imagine you live in a world where blue eye-d people are hated and aren't given jobs, you'd expect blue eyed people to engage in more crime wouldn't you ? Cause sometimes, in desperate cases, crime is your last resort. This doesn't reflect on bleue eyed people being lazy or irreverant, or if it does, it's not clear how much is inherent to the pattern you describe, and how much is due to the circumstances, and what's interesting, is that we have a say in those circumstances. Sorry for the blabber buddy =) just hope it was interesting to read =)

What kind of racist bull shit...

[–]AN3M0N3 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Is it racist to acknowledge that our judicial system is stacked against minorities now?

[–]ThatGuyV3 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not all minorities are criminals, nor are they predisposed naturally to being such. Having low expectations of people because of their race is indeed racist.

[–]MadlifeIsGod -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Just playing Devil's advocate here, but perhaps he's pointing out how the American justice system often more severely punishes minorities. Statistically speaking minorities are more likely to commit crimes in the USA and also much more likely to be convicted of said crimes or serve harsher punishment. Now I don't think that's because their skin colour makes them criminals, rather more a result of their environments, but it does disqualify more minorities from said jobs.

That said, I don't think that requirement is bad, if you commit a major crime it should disqualify you from some things. Nor do I think the requirement is racist for existing.

[–]vettaleda -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Is that what you were doing? Because what I heard was “a lot of minorities have a serious criminal past”, and that is pretty generalizing. Passing information through vague, poorly chosen diction is also not helping your statement there. Sure, the actual factual basis may be sound, but your delivery and the things you said before aren’t painting you in the best light.

Yes I agree; “our” - I never said where I was from - judicial system can be and has been completely racist and disproportionally punitive, even abusive, of minorities. You don’t need to be a sociologist to see that. I think that’s pretty clear.

I do think that lumping a group of people together by their racial relativeness and saying that they have a criminal past is, at least, in poor taste.

It also happens to be true, most firefighters come from the lower class (not judging, it's just a fact) so criminal records are a big hurdle.

It's also the sort of job that you only go into if you want to perform public service and that's also a big hurdle because many of them don't buy into the national mythology (for good reason)

[–]v573v -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

No, the one where they suppressed natives and developed murky racial identities tantamount to ‘if you feel native than you are native’ resulting in a pollution of authentic natives and the Spanish so that real natives lose their cultural identity and voice to faux natives who don’t see a problem with the Spanish language, culture, or religion, much like yourself, Mr. NoproblemshereTM after all you’re all native! Yay! Natives in grinding poverty? Nah! I’m not poor! Natives lacking upwards mobility? Nah! We’re doing great! My neighbors are 90% native and we don’t have any problems at all and I’m not sure why some naysayers are bitching...

If Canada allowed anybody with ‘native DNA’ or worse ‘felt native’ to call themselves First Nations the First Nation bands would also lose their voice to a legion of people who are happily Canadian. Canada’s problem is solved!

[–]luckytron 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

You’re giving credit to the Spanish for completing their genocide?

Genocide: The deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation.

If Canada allowed anybody with ‘native DNA’ or worse ‘felt native’ to call themselves First Nations the First Nation bands would also lose their voice to a legion of people who are happily Canadian. Canada’s problem is solved!

Bruh, I have absolutely no fucking clue what that is all about, but I commented because of this:

Or do you expect me to believe that the descendants of Spanish conquistadors didn’t actually exterminate the native locals but in fact are the local natives?

You are equating British and Spanish colonization, which where carried out in completely different ways.

As of now, there are 15 Million Fully Ethnically Indigenous people in Mexico, three times the amount of American Natives in the USA, which has three times the total population.

This is without taking into account that the rest of the population is basically Mestizo.

So in the end, where is the Genocide you spoke of?

Black isn't a race either. Its just a generalization used in politics to group people into lump sums so they can typecast each other into sub-categories that lead to segregation. Haven't you've ran a country before? These sub-groups = profit.

EDIT: Sure downvote me. But ask yourself: before we politically categorized everything was there as much segregation? Women are segregating from men and vice versa. Races relations have worsened as of recent, and the only ones making profit of this are people using real life drama for ad revenue, such as the news or social media. But who cares, downvote my opinion. None of you are willing to discuss this anyway.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman -2 points-1 points0 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

TBH the jury is out on the biological impact on being trans(the minority concordance among monozygotic twins being particularly damning), but that is an academic question separate from how transpeople should be treated.

Tomorrow there could be incontrovertible proof bring trans was simply a sexual perversion(something for which there is little if any proof of) and that still wouldn't justify marginalizing them.

[–]OscarAlexHasEntered 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It’s based on the formation of the brain stem. And for the record, if you think the jury is out on that, then you haven’t done your research.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I have done research.

First there was the basal strial terminalis hypothesis, which turned out to be diagnostically useless since a) it can only be examined post mortem, b) showed a deviation but not a correlation among trans people and most damning c) it isn't even sexually dimorphic until after puberty, conflicting with the testimonies of prepubertal children identifying as trans

Then there was the gray/white matter scans, as the ratio is sexually dimorphic but once again they did not find transmen had male ratios or transwomen had female ratios, but that they just deviated more from the average of their sex's ratios often being in the area in between, but not to the extent to be more closely aligned to the ratio of the sex associated with the gender to which they identified.

Then there was the hypothesis of brain mapping and the incidence of phantom limb sensations, comparing transwomen who experienced phantom penile sensations following SRS compared to cismen having had penectomies from penile cancer, with the former having a lower incidence. What is ignored in this is that SRS does not when properly done actually remove the nerves in the penis but simply repositions them along with the penile tissue which is inverted to have a shape closer to that of a vagina. One shouldn't expect phantom nerve sensations when the nerves aren't removed.

Then there is the "feminization in utero" hypothesis regarding a disparate distribution of sex hormones while developing in the womb, or potentially a disparity in sensitivity to those hormones among different tissues namely the brain.

An interesting hypothesis to be sure, but empirically unsupported. Monozygotic twins, who have both the same genome and the same uterine environment at the same time, show a minority of concordance for being trans, in that if one twin is trans the other is as well. The study found about 30-35% concordance among monozygotic twins and 5-10% among dizygotic. Not insignificant to be sure, but this in no way cements biology as the sole or chief factor, which one potential caveat: it could be for some trans people, in that being trans could have multiple sufficient conditions but no one necessary condition, and for 20-30% of transpeople that sufficient condition for them is biology. Another potentiality that has not be empirically explored is mutations in tissue sensitivity to sex hormones post zygotic split that only occur in one of the individuals.

That is why I say the jury is still out, not that it is definitely biology or definitely culture or definitely a mix. People tend to want simple answers to complex questions, and a singular cause explaining an event is no exception.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Rome wasn't big on gay marriage though. Pederasty with young boys was seen as a simple affectionate relationship-which is predatory by today's standards-but it wasn't marriage.

It's important to consider the distinction between sex and love and the historical context of how these are characterized over time.

[–]RedKetchum 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This has permeated much of modern cultures too, particular in Latin America which is predominantly Catholic.

In fact one could argue a good percentage of Latino transwomen are more gay men opting to have a more socially acceptable way of conducting their lives.

It sounds odd but them along Muslim countries particularly Iran who punished homosexuality with death but is totes fine if you as a gay man has SRS and lives as a woman. It really says something about what counts as progressive when considering these culture's contextualization of sex and gender.

Eh, the article's not THAT bad, it's just bit ... nothingy.

https://hbr.org/2018/12/making-u-s-fire-departments-more-diverse-and-inclusive?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=hbr

cliffs:

Women, there aren't many woman in the service.

Black people, there aren't very many black people in the service.

Gays, is there room for a paragraph on gays? Ok, there aren't many gay people in the service.

> What firefighters actually do.

> Yes, they’re fighting fires, which requires climbing ladders, hauling hoses, and carrying victims from burning buildings. But this is only a small subset of the job. In 2016, only 4% of emergency calls to which U.S. fire departments responded were actually fires. The majority (64%) were medical emergencies.

Ok, that's a fair point. It's just the article itself is very wishy-washy and doesn't really answer any questions. I think they should've forgotten about gay people and black people and focussed on a more factual approach to what modern firefighting actually is and how they can be best achieved by hiring diversity, be that through a social justice approach (more gays, more racial minorities) that many people are sick of, or a more objective approach (more older people, people from different industries with relevant qualifications) that might have actually got readers interesting.

I did a search for the question mark.

> So how can we get more firefighters to recognize members of non-prototypical groups as being equally capable of success in the fire service?

> But what’s the actual path for departments achieving more diversity?

> how can we get more firefighters to recognize members of non-prototypical groups as being equally capable of success in the fire service?

None of those questions were answered!

And, of course, there are very loaded questions. "How can we ever hope to make white, cis-het male fightfighters accept that transgender people can be more effective firefighters than they are?" Ok, that's an exaggeration, but if this went through the hands of a Guardian, Huff-Po or Buzzfeed subeditor, it's not hard to imagine it would've ended up that way.

If you want a wishy washy par, check this out.

> And we’re starting to learn more about how the research can extend to practice in the form of a general diversity and inclusion training program I developed for fire department leaders that includes education on how biases and stereotypes affect the experiences of firefighters from underrepresented groups. While not revolutionary, these steps are vital. “Biases impact how we think and the decisions we make; we should be aware that they exist and how we manage them,” says LACoFD fire chief Daryl Osby.

Translation: My research proves that research in the future might lead to more diversity in training and how more research may, or may not lead to education and training on both biases AND stereotypes that may or may not affect firefighters who are not from the more represented groups. My work isn't very significant, but the fact that I'm doing it is. For a relevant quote, one fire chief say 'A bias is something that does exist. Because it exists we should think about it. Also, we should manage it. Realising that something exists is the first step to accepting that it is real, which leads onto the second step of management."

That's one of the worst quotes I've ever read! I just imagine the fire chief wanting to give her the absolute bare minimum of agreement without committing himself to anything she might insist on in the future.

Final par

> Most firefighters are probably unaware of how their status-quo perceptions about their profession reinforce bias and create unequal opportunities for peers from underrepresented groups. My research points to a more inclusive alternative.

Oh jeez. Does this woman really think her liberal arts degree is of interest to firefighters with actual experience of the industry?

With that conclusion, I don't feel so bad that her commissioning paper got pounded so bad on Twitter.

As a certified firefighter, as someone who has volunteered and put my life on the line in the past for people, this makes me sick. You can't force someone in to a profession. And honestly, some of the nicest most tolerant people are fire and ems. They don't care who you are or what you've done, they just want to help. If you think your god damn sexism stems from a profession where people risk their lives every single day to help people they don't even know, then you're brain is more fucked up than I could ever imagine. Get a life, grow up, and stop being a mothetfucking baby.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My 5 year old son has already decided he wants to be a firefighter when he grows up.

So I'm guessing it's not something you just decide on one day.

If the firefighter is physically capable of pulling me out of a building then I don't care who they are. Men are stronger. Testosterone is a hell of a drug. But if a buff woman wants to do it and she can, hell yeah. Or if she wants to be an engine mechanic back at the firehouse also hell yeah.

But don't send the equality hire who can't lift 50 lbs in to rescue adults, please.

[–]azazelcrowley 19 points20 points21 points 7 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

Oh no wall of text.

Ignoring the gender thing for a moment because, ffs men are naturally stronger in ways relevant to the job what's wrong with you expecting this would end up equal, and assuming the rates are disproportionate rather than reflective of the society, I think there is some cause for concern over the racial disparity (Not in terms of efficacy of the fire service, but because of what it suggests about our society), but it wouldn't be resolved by the Neoliberal or Progressive approach of fucking about with the fire service to make them "more welcoming" or some shit. Because the problem isn't the fire service, it's the society that drives men who are physically active into different paths based on their race. It's possible that the "Missing" black men and so on here are into sports instead, and trying to succeed there, or they might be pushed toward crime, or somewhere else. The issue there would be impressing upon people from an early age and regardless of race (save for, perhaps, knowing where it's likely to be beneficial to say "Have you considered Sports/Firefighting?") that their skills have a wide range of applications in fields they may not have considered and so on.

On top of that you've got the poverty issues and different perspectives in some communities of what is a respectful and prestigious use of strength, fueled by many factors. It's entirely possible that some criminals, had they grown up in the suburbs, rather than being celebrated for their strength when used for criminal ends and seeing others celebrated for the same would have been celebrated when using it in more productive ways, and thus, would have been fashioned into firefighters or the like.

I think plenty of impoverished minority youths pursue a career in sports because it's viewed as one of the only ways out of their situation, despite it being a thing that only really rewards a handful of individuals and ultimately "wastes" the others time (If they are pursuing it as a career, rather than a pasttime.). Impressing upon people going into sports and so on that they should consider a physical career as a backup/supplement might impact this.

Just stuff like that I guess.

The reason these communities still view sports and so on as the way out is a leftover from a time when, yes, you couldn't really get a career in many things because we'd fuck you over for it and make you seem incompetent and so on, but it's difficult to fuck someone over for simply being good at sport, their record speaks for itself. They disproportionately pursue careers requiring exceptional individuals because there was a time when only exceptional individuals from their communities could overcome the circumstances they were placed into, and so it is the only "way out" of the situation. This fucks over the vast majority of them who, simply put, are not exceptional, and would be better served by pursuing a more "normal" (if prestigious and taxing) career in something like firefighting.

Progressives try and fix all this by fucking about with the fire service, when I'm not convinced that's the problem anymore. Active sabotage of peers is something the overwhelming majority of society is going to frown on, and I think any measures already in place to facilitate anti-discrimination are probably sufficient.

[–]Blutarg 14 points15 points16 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Okay, now I'm interested in why fewer firefighters are black than would be expected. I did some quick looking up, and the percentage of police officers who are black is right in line with the population as a whole, yet in a country that's 12% black, 6% of firefighters are black. I'm not saying that needs to change--black Americans have enough problems without being browbeaten into putting out fires, too--but I am curious if there's a reason for it.

[–]I_Pee_In_The_Sh0wer 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Find your local big city departments hiring announcement. Just pop in when they take the exam. You will find a shit ton of white males. Like over 90%. It's just a fact that blacks and Asians don't want to be firefighters. They aren't being discriminated against. In fact, most big city departments are doing everything they can to attract more diversity. Around where I worked you saw a fair amount of Hispanics, though.

[–]Brockkilledspeedy 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't understand why it needs to change. The physical standards to pass the exam have already been lowered for women. What else can they do?

[–]I_Pee_In_The_Sh0wer 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was a fireman for over 10 years. At all of the employment tests... It was filled with white males. Women in the fire service are overrepresented compared to those that apply. Last hiring exam we had, only 3 out of 500 applicants were female. They hired 1. That female is vastly over represented.

Besides, there's no problem that needs to be solved. More women in the fire service isn't some tragedy that even women want to solve .

[–]Blutarg 9 points10 points11 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]a_posh_trophy 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Surely you can't be that narrow-minded that you negate the fact that the fire brigade only employ applicants. If the majority of applicants happen to be white, how is that their fault?

[–]AKnightAlone 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women are too afraid to apply because of rape culture. Wouldn't want to be surrounded by a bunch of big strong men. And black men are too afraid to apply because they might get shot when someone sees them breaking into their home, even if it's burning. Mexicans wouldn't want to apply because they would need their green card.

All very obvious situations, really.

[–]Rogdozz 9 points10 points11 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because having diversity is important for police work. For example if the police has to confront a woman about something, it’s better if a female police officer handles the situation because she might be more understanding of the suspect. Generally when the population can relate to police officers, the chance of a situation escalating gets lower. Plus obviously if you have a lot of racial minorities in the police force the chance of racism gets reduced

No Harvard Biz review is right. There isn't any reason for whites and males to be over-represented among fire-fighters. One of the reasons this movement exists is that we want the risk associated with being a first-responder to be shared by everyone equally. (source: Myth of Male Power).

[–]lanceparth -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I agree with the need for racial diversity among police and firefighters but men have an obvious physical advantage over women when it comes to even the training for these occupations. If I were trapped in a burning building, I would absolutely prefer to depend on a man not woman to do what’s necessary to save me

[–]Sewblon -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I see the logic in that. All other things remaining equal the person you want chopping down a wooden door with a fire ax to get to you, or dragging your unconscious body out of a burning building, is the person with the most upper-body strength. But being over-weight tends to interfere with a fire-fighters ability to perform their duties for the same reasons it interferes with all strenuous physical activity. https://www.fireengineering.com/articles/print/volume-165/issue-12/features/physical-fitness-fire-service.html. Women tend to be less overweight than men. https://www.kff.org/other/state-indicator/adult-overweightobesity-rate-by-gender/?currentTimeframe=0&sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D

So women's bodies actually do bring something valuable to the table in this case.

[–]EloquentBarbarian 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How many overweight fire-fighters have you met that are still in service?

Women tend to be less overweight than men.

I am all for men’s rights, however the reason that firefighters in the U.S. are majority white males is because to some these are considered high paying low entry jobs so there is a good ol’ boys mentality and you can only get one of these jobs if you are related to someone there, basically if you have someone on the inside. A lot of these firefighters with overtime and such make 100K+ a year and there was even an article a while back about some firefighters making over $250K a year, more than the salaries of their state’s respective governors. In some counties there have even been lawsuits over the unfair and discriminatory hiring process towards non white men. So if you take anything form my comment, it’s just that this situation is more than what appears at the surface.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And according to Indeed, the average salaried firefighter makes $43k per year in the US which is only a bit higher than the US median income.

https://www.indeed.com/salaries/Firefighter-Salaries

Also according to Indeed, the average police officer makes $52k per year in the US for a job where people aren't 2/3 volunteers.

https://www.indeed.com/m/?from=homeLogo

Just because a few people make a lot of money in a position isn't typical of the position as a whole.

White males aren't becoming firefighters because of their shot at a extremely small segment of well paid positions. If anything we can probably make the reverse argument. They're privilege allows them access to free time and resources that others might not have so they can pursue what they truly care about...For instance...Fire fighting.

[–]Crash-Bandicuck69 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Again, it depends on where they are. Those stats also dont seem to take into account overtime, which almost all (paid) firefighters take advantage of. I have literally never met a firefighter that makes less than $80,000 a year, and ive asked around a LOT because I once considered making it my own career. Im not talking about any racial or sex based privilege.

Firefighters, paramedics and cops are usually in that career because their older family members were. This isn't unusual or bad, but it creates unintentional cultural monopolies in areas that are essential to ALL communities. It's not surprising that there are aggressively sexist and racist people in these careers, based on their insular family traditions and the conservative preference for authoritarian power. It is TRULY a life-threatening issue in some communities.

That said, I've trained with cops, paramedics and fire fighters. They're ALMOST all good people, but they think of each other like family and they think of you as a moron or threat.

I’m gonna get downvoted to oblivion for this but here it is.

I have absolutely zero problems with firefighters being mostly white or mostly male but in the US the firefighters union is the best there is and unfortunately what happens is firefighters usually only hire their own family members or friends. This is the reason firefighters are overwhelmingly white and male. People get the job based on connections not just ability and merit.

It actually is something of a problem, and not just for whamen and minorities but also for white males who would love to be firefighters but aren’t connected to the special club.

It's literally one of the most important things ever made by humans.

[–]Rogdozz 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Pretty sure it’s not one of the most important things ever made by humans.

I mean, I don’t agree with the commenter above you, obviously he’s a retard lmao.

But freedom of speech isn’t something holy that was created just because it’s “the right thing to do” or whatever. It’s just a means to an end. Just like democracy. People didn’t start a bloody civil war that meant losing family and friends just because they felt like monarchy is morally wrong. They did it because monarchs were exploiting them, they were hungry and it made them unhappy with their lives so they wanted a political system that made it impossible for the majority to be exploited like that, and came up with democracy.

Then when democracy was enforced they figured hey we should probably allow people to express any political opinion they have because that makes it easier for people to figure out who to vote for.

My point is that limiting freedom of speech isn’t the end of the world. It can be bad, but it can be good as well if implemented correctly. Just look at Germany, at some point in time (after ww2) they figured that it’s probably not good to allow people to promote genocide, everyone (except Nazis) agreed that it doesn’t contribute anything valuable and only creates a risk of something similar to Nazi Germany happening again. So they basically locked that particular ideology out of political discussion, and in 70 years this limit on freedom of speech still hasn’t expanded any further than it should

[–]perplexedm 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

Does free speech have limits? Is this free speech or creating splits and issues in society? If any issue happen in society, for eg., if some random person acts violently on these kind of poisonous arguments who all should be responsible?

This has been noted to different than freedom of speech. If I were to act on your comment earlier and silence who I deem fit your description of feminazis or whatever you call them. Would you then be responsible? No, it would be me because I decided to take action on your words ME.

To add silencing a persons free speech helps no one, infact it would inflate theor victim complex.

Hence I talked about how Tim Cook responded to white supremacists (which I feel was in right direction), porn, etc. on his assets. He openly said he will not allow a platform for such people on his sites.

To be quite frank, always want to see information to be free but there are some cases like this which should be thoroughly scrutinized.

This is so dumb. Of fucking course it's a problem when apparently only white males want to be firefighters. And you're a fucking idiot if you think that's because anyone else isn't brave enough or some shit. Apparently there's a reason why males of colour don't want to join, and of fucking course we need to figure out that reason and do something about it.

[–]canuckfanatic 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It's only really a problem if there's bias against people of colour.

I'm an Indo-Canadian male, son of two immigrant parents, and this post made me realize that I've never heard another immigrant/1st gen person of colour express a desire to become a firefighter.

If it comes down to people of colour not wanting to be firefighters as much as white people do, then I don't think there's anything to fix.

In my experience being surrounded by immigrants my whole life, the lifestyle of being a firefighter doesn't align with the goals of immigrants/1st generation citizens.

No it's always a problem. Any institution as broad and general as firefighters need to be an accurate representation of a society because that's how a fair and equal society looks. It doesn't matter why it's not, what matters is that it's fixed.

It might not be a problem with how the institution of fire departments operate, but with how PoC and immigrants fit into Western/American society.

Firefighting requires long shifts and risking your life. It might be the case that a significant number of able-bodied minorities aren't willing to risk their lives because they might have relatively more responsibility to their families than the average white person.

For example, my family of 6 relied entirely on my immigrant dad's sole income - there was no way that he was going to take a job like firefighting because dying on the job would destroy the family financially.

This isn't a problem that can be resolved through a revision of how fire departments work. This is a societal issue, with the impact on fire departments being a symptom.

I never said the fire department needed to revise anything. What I said was that it's a problem that needs to be fixed.
