There are a few super markets by the name of "Ralphs" where I live, and I've recently started riding my bike there instead of driving. My main way of transporting goods is through a backpack, and security doesn't like backpacks (for obvious reasons), so they tell me to take it off and leave it at the front of the store.

However this got me thinking (mainly thanks to this subreddit) about how security would act if a woman were to do the same thing. Simply start walking around with a backpack on, and see what, if anything happens. Nothing did, she even made it a point to stop and look around IN FRONT of the security gaurd, still nothing. Immediately after she came out, I went in with my backpack and got stopped in a matter of 2 minutes.

I tried to think about a reason for this, we both had black backpacks, her's wasn't pink or anything "less threatening", but just for kicks, I decided to test out the "large purse" instead of a back pack. Granted a purse is more gender sided, but for the sake of the experiment, we did the same thing but with a purse of course. Same result, I was stopped.

TL;DR - Security 9/9 times tells me to leave my bag at the front, nothing happens to the woman.

This happened at 6 different Ralphs, 2 different Whole Foods, and 1 Smart and Final.

Now the question is, what can I do about this? Next time it happens, start questioning? Video tape it?
