Conduct the experiment as planned and then record the response you get from management when you present them with the results .

Now , this will only serve to piss them off of course . They may counter with something like "Well , 9 out of 10 thieves are male so it only makes sense to ....blah , blah , blah ." Then you can say "Well of course 9 out of 10 thieves are male . It's not like you're looking for the female thieves , are you ?"

I for one would love to see a video, but you could get in trouble for videotaping on private property. What would be hilarious would be for your female friend to go in ahead of you, not be stopped, and then leave the store. Then you go in and get stopped she approaches saying "what's this about honey?" to you, and you reply "they make you leave your bag at the front of the store". Make it as uncomfortable as you can for security, and demand that they explain themselves. Should be fun to watch.

What's stupid about this is that statistics suggest men and women shoplift equally as much. There is absolutely no reason for this other than women's assumed privilege to carry a bag everywhere they go, and/or just plain misandry.

Do tape it! I've love to see the highlights. Make sure to question the security personnel as to why the woman you saw walking around was allowed to have her backpack but not you.

Make sure to use a hidden camera because they can ask you not to tape inside the store and you have to comply, but if it's a hidden camera obviously they won't ask.

This happens to me a lot in retail stores. I just casually point to the nearest female in the place with a big purse and say "what about her?" If there's no purse in eyesight, I ask them if they usually stop girls with bags as well, and point out that my messenger bag is smaller than most purses. All with an aloof look on my face, never confrontational.

Almost 100% of the time they just sorta shrug and go "eh, I guess you're right" and wave me through. I've never had an issue.

I don't resent them for asking. I don't think it's part of some evil conspiracy to keep me down. I got profiled, they're a little biased, BFD.

I am not trying to diminish your experience, but what you are dealing with is poorly trained security guards. a true loss prevention professional will be blind to gender as well as age. but then again the only time you will encounter a true loss prevention pro is if you have actually concealed an item, passed all points of sale, and exited the building.

You and your female friend should both dress in jeans and a flannel shirt. Have her walk in, not be stopped, then 5 minutes later, you walk in. When stopped, have her come out and ask them what's wrong.

Talk to the MANAGEMENT, not the security. I used to work security. We just do our jobs. We're not allowed to take bags away from women because they're purses, and culturally speaking that's what women use to carry around money. Taking a womans purse is like taking a mans cargo-pockets.

I know it isn't fair, they should let men in with satchels, or whatever, but talk to MANAGEMENT, not security.

I think it's very interesting that you're having this problem. Especially since women are some of the most prolific shoplifters.

What do you suppose would happen if you wore business attire and carried a briefcase-type bag?

I had this happen to me just this previous weekend. I had to ride a motorcycle 200 miles to a wedding (Honestly, didn't mind at all), but needed to pick up some ear plugs for the ride, I was in full gear, with a backpack, and carrying my helmet walking into an ACE Hardware. They politely "suggested" they could watch my bag for me, and I complied.

Honestly, it was fine and I am not about to make a stink about it, especially when on a schedule. Also, the bag thing I don't see as even "subtle misandry" but just "common sense". As some others have pointed out it's more of a "privelage" of women to get to keep their bags than it is a prejudice against men.

The ACE hardware people were very polite, helpful and personable, their request was so natural that it wasn't only common policy, I doubt they discriminated or racial profile any particular type of customer. I have picked fights before concerning backpack/messenger bag carrying, but "meh", I was young.

If you really want to "Test" though, I would bring a passport, a semi-important docket/folder (maybe birth certificate?) as well as a flash drive and put it in the backpack.

When they ask you to leave it up front, tell them you have important valuables in it and you would rather not. I can see some of the justification for women having more leeway over personal bags being because of carrying around "personal items" that they cannot carry in their pockets/jacket. You should mimic these conditions.

I had a similar (but less men's rightzy) experience at albertson in washington:

I have a friend who looks more intimidating then i do, Everywhere we go he gets asked to put his backpack up at the front desk often, i, with either my laptop backpack or my laptop messenger bag, never do.

So we tried switching bags, he still got asked, not me.

so we got our shit, got to the checkstand, and i asked for the manager. after a long talk he said he would talk to the other managers and see if some consistency could be interjected into the enforcement.

Now i seem to be getting asked, and i saw one time both me and this one young lady get asked.

so it would appear mission success.

TLDR: just talk to them dumbass.

This is terrible but not surprising. Just another piece of our anti-male culture. I don't have any good scientific data off the top of my head, but from observation and anecdotes I'd say if anyone loves to steal (between men and women) it is women. I've read in a couple places about the phenomenon of wealthy women stealing because they like getting away with it, the thrill. Not to mention most women always have a purse on hand as well as the ability to hide things in places like bras. Like I said, this is non scientific just what I suspect.

In terms of the sexist anti-male double standards in enforcement. That's quite wrong and quite interesting. Here again, I wonder if there is any scientific information via, say, secretive studies using plants. On a real personal level, I've had two ex girlfriends, a couple female friends, and numerous third party stories (e.g. friend's girlfriend) talk to me about the female penchant for theft.
