I noticed a particularly aggravating discussion in the Facebook comments section. I was nearly convinced the "woman" defending "feminism" was troll due to the repetitive and outlandish nature of her comments. Turns out, after a simple search, she is real & actually a college professor. Anyhow, here it is...

She and Tocqueville obviously does/did not not understand what feminism is or what feminists have fought (for and against) for so long. It's not about erasing anything, it's simply about equality.

NO. Feminists want to ban men spreading legs on public transportation. Feminists want to censor internet comments that make girls feel bad. Feminists clain [sic] all men are rapists and ignore the rapant [sic] paring of teen boys by women teachers. Feminists claim men commit all domestic violence..... an on and on... Read the news.

You have a very perverted view of what feminism is about. You need to stop paying attention to the nonsense mass media is spoon feeding to you and do some real research and talk to some feminists. You paint with a vary broad and inaccurate brush. I can't help but note that it's primarily men having a problem with this concept and getting all bent out of shape. They fear something will be taken away from them. Don't worry boys, we don't want anything you have except the same rights.

YOU HAVE ALL THE RIGHTS MEN HAVE! In the USA you can do and be what you want. I study feminism and live with three gender studies feminists. Feminists paint men with the broad brush as rapists, women beaters and war mongers. Feminists find every reason to show male nature is the blame for all women's problems. Rape Culture, Patriarchy and masculinities. Women have SPECIAL rights that men do not have in the USA. Women can hit a man and not get jailed. Women get much lower jail sentences for the SAME crime. Women have afirmative action. A goverment [sic] fund of 800 million dollars a year goes to rape and sexual assault against women. White women in America are privileged. Women are pampered by men (if she likes men). Women do not pay on a date. What are you talking about? Men and women age 21 to 34, Men earn 9% LESS than women. The wage gap is a serious lie! Women are coddled by society if they cry. Women and children first. Women do not have to fight in wars and get injured or die. Women do not work in high risk or dirty jobs. SERIOUSLY? What rights are you talking about? Men have supported women emotionally, physically and financially since the start of time. FINALLY women can do it all without a man.

You apparently want to be able to hit a woman with impunity. No one should be allowed to hit anyone with impunity. Rape and sexual assault are crimes, and many men are victims of sex crimes as well; why do you think sex crimes should should not be prosecuted/prevented? Some white women are indeed privileged, but nearly all white men are privileged. I cannot speak to the total absurdity of your assertation about women "who like men" being pampered. You obviously have been dating the wrong women if you have had none pay their way (and yours) on a date. I suggest you try dating a feminist if that's what you want. But if you do, I suggest you refrain from mansplaining the way you did here!

There was more of course, but the dialog between these two was the worst. There is clearly no reasoning with someone like this. The unfounded loaded questions probably pissed me off the most.

This is very close to being just another "women are really oppressed but if we don't go back to a time where women are provided for, protected and catered to by men, then women are even more oppressed" piece. It's anti-feminism out of personal self-interest, entitlement and/or hedonism by women, rather than a genuinely egalitarian perspective. It is simply this "I would rather be passive and demand that men take charge, because I don't want to take charge or date a passive man" sentiment that some women favor and then try to support by twisting facts.

The problem is assuming there is such a thing as "feminism". There are MANY "feminisms", and they all have different perspectives on the values they share, the purposes of their actions, and even different beliefs about what they want society to look at.

Some of those feminisms are universally supported by most intelligent people, whether male or female. Others of those feminisms are rejected by most intelligent people.

The idea of equal treatment under law is complex enough as it is, but most people will suggest they support the idea in theory (though many women still do not want equal custody standing in family court, or to be drafted into combat--hell, if I were a woman, I'd not want to cede any ground on those issues if I didn't have to...). But even then there is a lot of debate that society needs to be willing to have, and have again, over time.

But when you get into the cultural feminisms--which pronouns are most acceptable in literature? What style guide should we play by in this regard? What properties of art are inherently "male" versus "female" and how should gallery space be allowed between them in publicly funded galleries--when you get into the cultural sides, you have as many sects and splits and divisions as religions have doctrinal disputes and denominations. They claim to read out of the same song book, but they have very different fundamental value sets and purposes. Their ambitions are, in many ways, as far apart as they are from some of the "men's-rights" groups they compete against.

Whenever I read through these pieces, and I read on all sides of the issue and have a pretty moderate point of view as a whole, I always have to identify which "feminism", or school of thought, I'm dealing with. And that's the key to both being rigorous with bad thinking, but also to finding productive common ground on practical policy issues.
