Sport is inherently "objectifying" - you reduce a "complete person" with hopes and dreams and a personality (blah blah blah) down to a piece on a chess board, or an object in a race to be the first over a line. So in that sense, it's really easy to take footage of any female athlete and claim it is objectification.

I say female athlete because any blatant case of male objectification - like when comments are made about male diver's tiny bathing suits - it is argued that it isn't objectification because reasons (usually something about patriarchy, power, and history).

The truth is that "Bodies in Motion", other than a bad title and a questionable soundtrack, is neither sexy nor sexually objectifying. It highlights female athletes participating in a variety of sports - and not just traditionally feminine sports either. Shot Put is shown - which is decidedly unsexy and unfeminine.

Perhaps we should be more like Saudi Arabia and force all of our female athletes to dress "modestly" with hair, arms, and legs covered, lest we mistake them for prostitutes. /s

Both articles should have focused on the shaming of the people involved, but as you can see their authors clearly have an agenda and chose which one to get outraged at and which one to smirk at.

How did the idea of 'objectification' get so corrupted? We 'objectify' people every day, and it's not a bad thing. When you get a drink at your local cafe, you don't care about the personality of the barista who's serving you. Your only concern is getting your drink. This is 'objectifying'. Why do feminist blogs keep going on and on about it as if it's something inherently bad?

Ronda Rousey was on the cover of ESPN's body issue recently. A number of people were incensed by this, and claimed that it was sexual objectification of women. I have several feminist friends who were furious about it. The majority of the photos in the magazine are of men, and there is nothing more or less sexual about the women, or more or less revealing (okay, technically the pictures of men are more revealing, but that's purely because we have not decided to sexualize mens nipples the same we have womens). It pisses me off, because the entire point of the magazine is showing athletes naked and in their physical peak. To say we can't do that with female athletes is to negate their athletic contribution and reduce them down to tits and ass. I did notice that most of the women making this argument were in poor physical condition however.

Yeah, Jezebel pretty much disgusts me on this. I tried calling them out on their long-running Thighlights thing, once, and got some BS about how 'no, we may be drooling and making sexual comments, but we're really celebrating the athleticism of these men' (uh, yeah, because that's a metric of male sex appeal). Followed by some mental gymnastics about how it's totally not the same because patriarchy. So, Jezebel really disgusts me on this issue.

Jezebel is part of the Gawker network which is a series of trash/tabloid style blogs.

They intentionally say things that are inflammatory in order to get page clicks - which equals ad revenue for them. One incident had them using a universal remote to sabotage a CES presentation, another incident had them insulting nerd culture altogether.

Those people are shameless and nothing they publish should ever be taken seriously.

Male objectification is VERY different from female objectification. Men don't have to worry about rape (getting raped) or other things, and a normal male would be happy to have many women gawking at his body. It's simply the way the world works...
