My concern is consent not being presented to boys as a right but, rather, an obligation.

[–]russwriter67 175 points176 points177 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, it seems like boys consenting doesn’t matter as long as the girl consents.

[–]Mandalorian2037 79 points80 points81 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Talk about hittin the nail on the head, you're exactly right.

[–]MisfitAngel669 23 points24 points25 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Well it shouldn’t be that way. Women can rape and sexually abuse too.

[–]ImmortalEdge -5 points-4 points-3 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Usually not tho. But yes it can happen

[–]rabel111 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Check out the numbers of female teachers raping underage boys. Due to the outdated sexist laws that exclude female rape by definition, the "official" numbers of rapes and sexuals assault commited by women is substantial lower than actual events.

Remember, men are reluctant to report sexual offenses for fear of being arrested and charged by sexist pigs, and sexual offenses by women are defined differently in many jurisdictions, and are not counted in official statistics.

[–]ImmortalEdge 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good post!!!

[–]MBV-09-C 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Frequency doesn't matter for this, if it can happen, then consent from both should be required.

[–]DeputyDak 24 points25 points26 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I don't think consent should even be a topic that is discussed with young 5 year old kids. It's common sense that rape is wrong and most people don't do it because of empathy. You'd never tell a 5 year old kid '' Hey don't become a terrorist '' or '' don't carjack ''. So why this? This is just some radical feminist ultra-left propaganda that assumes all men are born bad and need to be conditioned.

[–]realvmouse 11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Your school/parents didn't teach you "ask nicely, don't just take things? Don't hit? Don't push? Don't name-call?"

I guess that explains a lot.

[–]thatusenameistaken 9 points10 points11 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I don't think consent should even be a topic that is discussed with young 5 year old kids.

It depends on what you mean by consent. Do you need to get into the nitty gritty? No. Should you teach your child they have the right to decline touching like hugs and kisses from anyone as they wish? Yes. What sex they or the person they're declining bodily contact with is irrelevant.

Most molestation is from family and close family friends. If you teach your children early that they have the right to not consent to Aunt Janice's sloppy kisses and constant demands for hugs and sitting on her lap at Thanksgiving, they're much more likely to report abuse you don't see.

[–]BornAgainSpecial 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Consent is a nutzo concept. We always qualify it. Consenting adults can get married, if they are human, not related, and it's just two of them, and they're not drunk while they consent... You can kill an animal and eat it, but you can't marry it, because it can't give you consent, because it doesn't have any consent to give. Women change their mind and claim rape after the fact. Consent is meaningless.

[–]GivePuppiesBazookas 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't think consent should even be a topic that is discussed with young 5 year old kids. It's common sense that rape is wrong and most people don't do it because of empathy.

Seriously, if you think "teaching" someone something is going to make them not something as horrible as a rapist, you are out of your fucking mind honestly. Like telling a murderer they need permission first (say assisted suicide) or simply that murder is bad, isn't fucking stopping a single murder, ever. Saying "we need to teach ____" for something empathy or common sense related is an empty argument intended to blame, not solve anything. No one in their right mind thinks you can just teach the evil out of someone. If that were the case, bad people pretty much would not exist in the first place after being told something is bad 800,000 times as a kid.

[–]MsD27 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There are some outliers when it comes to extreme behavior for sure but I don't really think that children are born evil. They are taught things like brushing their teeth, cleaning up after themselves and hopefully empathy and compassion. If they aren't taught these things then they will have fucked up teeth, messy houses and be shitty. If they are given all the tools and still end up being a rapist or murderer then that is on them. A lot of "bad" people come from bad circumstances or were never given boundaries.

The sad truth :(

[–]Over-Painter 33 points34 points35 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Look, I’m a woman and I know circumcision doesn’t have a direct impact on my life but this is something that enrages me.

Circumcision without consent is genital mutilation and is incredibly fucked up. For all you men out there that weren’t given a choice, I’m sorry. My heart aches for you because what was done to you was not fair or right.

Even if you’re a circumcised man who doesn’t care that you were circumcised, my heart still aches for you all the same. You were never given a chance to feel what it would have been like to have your foreskin, so it’s hard to miss it. But the choice was taken from you when it undoubtedly should have been your decision alone. You’ve also probably been led to believe that it’s nothing to be upset over, but it’s okay if you are. Something was taken from you.

In the US, we must stop assuming that circumcision is the default choice. Foreskins are not inherently gross, dirty, or ugly! They have a function and provide pleasure.

It is your body. It should be your choice.

Edit: For those who opt for circumcision because you don’t want your son to look “abnormal,” all it takes to change this perception IS TO STOP CUTTING.

[–]Shiiroun 16 points17 points18 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Thank you for the empathy, and for calling it what it is : mutilation. I appreciate your sentiment, it's nice to hear empathy on the issue coming from someone else than an other cut man, it shows that it's starting to get recognized - even though we're far from getting there and thousands of baby boys are being cut each day.

[–]Over-Painter 9 points10 points11 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thanks are not necessary! I just do what I can. My theory on how we fix this going forward is to simply not be ashamed to talk about it.

Short of religious reasons (which are much harder to combat, but can still be done when we talk about the differences between what was originally referred to as circumcision vs. what modern circumcision has become), most of what we face with this in the US is simply cultural norms and fear/misunderstandings of our own bodies.

I’m the annoying friend trying to share information and have open discussions with my pregnant friends. I’m sure some of them have tuned me out, but at the very least, I’ve made some examine the question instead of blindly following the “norm.” My more logical friends have been highly receptive to our talks because facts win out; Why take an unnecessary risk with our future children’s sexual reproductive organs?

[–]Erizeth 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

People who think the natural male body is abnormal are all kinds of fucked up. Men and women need to stand up for each other alike to get rid of this fucked up perception about our own bodies. Mens issues are women's issues. Women's issues are men's issues too. We stand together.

[–]xsplizzle 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You’ve also probably been led to believe that it’s nothing to be upset over

This comment could fit into a lot of threads on here

[–]Frosty-Gate-8094 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I dont have a problem with adult circumcision.

It's an important part of some religions. Fair enough.

Religious boys can get circumcised when they turn 18 yrs.

Why do it in infancy? Without his consent? What if he decides to become atheist in adulthood?
Will he get his foreskin back?

If people get to choose their religion, they should also get to choose their body appearances.

Taking that choice away is violation of their consent.. That is barbaric.

[–]pussy-flaps-hang-low 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep, just imagine having your clitoral hood and labia removed without your consent. Absolutely barbaric.

[–]NinjaVisible38271 point 2 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Thank you

[–]Vista_Seagrape 136 points137 points138 points 5 years ago (53 children) | Copy Link

This is a great hypocrisy among many who talk about body autonomy and say "my body my choice." As soon as it's about baby boys having their reproductive organs permanently damaged, suddenly "my body my choice" no longer matters.

[–]Kilo0708 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

People also don't realize that a circumcision can be botched and have permanent effects. Like literally being unable to climax during sex and not being able to have children because of it.

If anyone knows about the controversy a while ago in the Smash Bros. Community, they know this all too well. One of the better players in the community was falsely accused of rape, and his only defense was to have to tell everyone about his botched circumcision. Something he never wanted to share with anyone ever. He literally said he wanted to take that secret to his grave, and he couldn't.

[–]Panderjit_SinghVV 58 points59 points60 points 5 years ago (30 children) | Copy Link

Yes. Mother’s sexual preference, which varies by continent, becomes the deciding factor when mutilating boys is the issue.

[+]YourPillsAintWorkin6 points 5 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

We don't stop to think about how fucked up this really is. The mother is projecting her sexual preferences onto her infant son. She's literally thinking "I want my son the have the kind of cock I'd want inside me." It's really twisted, and opens my eyes to just how much humans are willing to accept fucked up practices just because they are commonplace.

[–]GivePuppiesBazookas 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is in part why The Grandmother Project is a thing. One of their topics is female circumcision's. Want to take a guess why the project is called the grandmother project?

https://grandmotherproject.org/

[–]Erizeth 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I come from a country where circumcision is uncommon; But I've never heard of it being a "mother's decision" for those who do get it. If anything, it's a family tradition/belief usually enforced by both parents, or the father who is seen as the religious "head" of a family unit.

While circumcision is decidedly fucked up, I feel like your statement is a bit of a stretch.

[–]thebestestbetsy 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Same goes for killing them before they're born in many countries.

[–]-Soggy-Potato- 15 points16 points17 points 5 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link

Isn’t it much more strongly a cultural / norm based issue?

Hence why it’s far from universal, outside of the US next to no western nations really practice it outside of medical necessity

Seems a little naive to suggest it’s heralded by sexual preference when identity and culture are so obviously more applicable. There’s so much more history and cultural implications compared to something as nuanced and relatively modern as ‘sexual preferences’

[–]VicisSubsisto 23 points24 points25 points 5 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

"I want him to look like his dad" is commonly cited as a reason, I think that's what they meant.

[–]-Soggy-Potato- 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Still sounds a lot like a cultural reason if anything

The dads was cut because his dad was, ect ect ect. Or they want their son cut because everyone else does in their country / a rite of passage regarding religious influence

This person presents it as purely sexually motivated. That people circumcise purely because they view it as more ‘aesthetically pleasing’. But that alone wouldn’t be a convincing reason to circumcise

It’s really just undermines the way more relevant cultural identity part of things, disregards any sort of religious influence, and looks past the wider social norms as motivations, just to focus on a niche.

It’s trying way to hard to blame mothers and grossly misrepresenting that influence. It’s about as far as you can get from a ‘deciding factor’ when acknowledging the numerous more relevant and realistic explanations / reasonings for why circumcision takes place. And If anything that notion of aesthetics fits into the wider cultural notions of fitting in with the ideal / stereotypical knob. It’s simply unnecessary to try and blame mothers when it’s really not that personal / individualistic

[–]ryandiy 21 points22 points23 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And culture is just peer pressure from dead people

[+]needletothebar1 points 5 years ago [recovered] (5 children) | Copy Link

whether you think it's convincing or not, it's the reason many many american parents give.

convincing to who?

[–]-Soggy-Potato- 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Wdym ‘convincing to who’. You think people would perform what is essentially cosmetic surgery to children if there wasn’t decisive cultural backing? Or am I misunderstanding what you said

I don’t doubt it’s a reason, I’m just explaining that playing this off as the main reasoning is a lame attempt to put the blame on one specific group of people when in reality this is a much wider cultural issue. I’ve mentioned before but it’s an unnecessary oversimplification that utterly fails to address motivations and the numerous other culturally influenced reasons to circumcise

[+]needletothebar1 points 5 years ago [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

i don't agree with you.

you said, and i quote "But that alone wouldn’t be a convincing reason to circumcise"

i'm trying to understand what you meant by that.

[–]-Soggy-Potato- 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That people wouldn’t circumcise their child purely for purely cosmetic reasons alone, in response to the original comment that said specifically a woman’s sexual preference is a ‘deciding factor’

Then, that saying they would and that this is a deciding factor is sort of missing the mark, ignoring the wider context to focus on a niche. It disregards social context and the other equally common grounds for why some cultures such as the US practice circumcision

[+]needletothebar1 points 5 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

it seems to be a convincing enough reason for most american parents.

[–]-Soggy-Potato-1 point 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I’ve already explained this though

It’s not really about aesthetics in itself it’s about culture and more general social norms that influence the decision or push that ‘looks’ niche among the many other different / separate motivations

[–]Njodr 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Honestly though, where is your proof for that reasoning? I've never heard this.

[–]VicisSubsisto 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm not gonna dig through Reddit to find old comments, but I've seen it in /r/femradebates and /r/egalitarian, might have even been here.

I was just trying to offer a potential explanation for the previous commenter's verbiage.

[–]Njodr 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ahh, I apologize. I misunderstood it as you stating it as fact rather than a possible explanation.

[+]needletothebar1 points 5 years ago [recovered] (11 children) | Copy Link

having spoken to thousands and thousands of parents about it, it's sickeningly often done due to the mother's sexual preference.

"i'm getting my son circumcised because i'd never suck on one that wasn't".

r/GrossCutters

[–]-Soggy-Potato- 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

So... still cultural...

This isn’t an innate sexual preference

This is a social norm that is pushing the idea that uncircumcised penises are unusual and uncommon, in turn pushing ignorance and aversion. People don’t like the unknown

This isn’t women having a sexual preferences

This is a culture that presents circumcision as normal and positive for the child. And because of that, in turn off shoot excuses pop up to justify circumcision, be it from sexual preference from the women, personal experience from the dad, or religious / identity based motivations. They all stem from the wider culture that supports circumcision.

Saying it’s a sexual preference is grossly oversimplifying something which has no place being simplified. It pinpoints 1 reason and plays it off as the dominant factor, rather than being realistic and acknowledging that there are many factors

If anything logically sexual preference wouldn’t be as common, usually the decision would be up to the dad since they share the appendage. And even then the sexual preference idea would be shared by both parents, not just the mother

[–]Terminal-Psychosis 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

True, this is in no way a natural, organic sexual preference.

It is definitely the result of a propaganda campaign that has been waged for decades.

Waged by sick and twisted child abusers no less.

[–]-Soggy-Potato- 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

It’s hard to criticise culture which is the main issue and why change isn’t really happening

Something like circumcision has such significant religious backing that makes criticism hard to really make without undermining tradition. Something so closely tied to a persons collective identity and something that may ultimately have protection under religious rights is a tough force to criticise

The best we can do is remove the ignorance of the situation like all the ‘health benefits’ or ‘hygiene’ myths. But those propaganda aspects are still sort of separate from the religious ones

It doesn’t really feel fair or totally reasonable to call these people twisted child abusers when being sympathetic of the context. Hard to blame people for being socialised into thinkings it’s fine and normal

[–]Frag_Bearlm 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

ANy sort of religious backing is never an excuse to do simething that should be illegal

[–]-Soggy-Potato- 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I personally do agree that circumcision is wrong

But my point is that it is incredibly hard to productively criticise culture, especially something rooted in religious belief

You risk stepping into grounds of enforcing morality. Regarding something like religious belief you begin to enforce what amounts to western or secular ideas of morality onto religious or non-western notions of morality

How far do to step into religious freedoms and culture, and how strongly do you assert secular ideas or morality as the correct and healthy stance over the other differences stances

It’s just a pretty difficult issue to bridge over. Realistically in western societies such as America with trends of secularisation and general growth of tolerance / flexibility in belief, circumcisions can at least be moved away from a social norm outside of religion to keep it in a more defined spiritual bubble but it’s difficult to go any further than that

[–]Frag_Bearlm 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Thats like saying, if it was rooted in our religion to kill all gay people, we would do so, with the justification being 'culture'. The government neess to kill all legislation prottecting relegion, the world would be a better place without blind faith

[–]-Soggy-Potato-1 point 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Not really

Im just pointing out that there needs to be acknowledgment that for some religious groups circumcision is a close part of their identity and belief

Their interpretation of the world is just as valid to them as other interpretations are to us and it’s hard to present one as superior / the correct interpretation since it tramples on their entire ideologies

Realistically, the rights of Religious freedom isn’t going to be dissolved, especially in a place like America where faith is so fundamental to many people

People are still kept in check by the laws and allowed to pretty much think and say what they want given it doesn’t lead to harm (like killing gay people)

People can’t kill gay people based on religious motivations because it’s illegal in the West, religion and a nations laws aren’t always linked with religion (still do have placed like the Middle East with Shariah law)

There needs to be a degree of tolerance and respect within society in order to honour religious rights. More traditional Christians may disagree with others and say gay marriage is wrong, other people will disagree

This issue is its immoral to overstep and prevent a persons individual beliefs because realistically our understanding is no less valid than theirs. We can say their practices are harmful and immoral but they can say the creator of the universe told them to do it, justifying the actions. Obviously it depends on the extremity of the belief, killing gay people isn’t as bad as circumcision, the two have different impacts that affect how tolerant society is to it

It’s incredibly difficult to value one side over another. Broad unrealistic statements about dissolving freedoms of religious expression ultimately does more harm than good when it steps into the grounds of forcing people to go against their core beliefs and ideas

Circumcision is wrong, but it’s religious basis makes it difficult to criticise, that’s my point. In order to lessen the negative impact the best option is to limit it to a religious practice, and as society progresses and the values change, then maybe some less strict aspects of faith with develop along with that societal change as religious beliefs historically have

[+]needletothebar1 points 5 years ago [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

usually the decision would be up to the dad

do you have any evidence to back up this claim? in more and more cases, the dad is long gone months before birth.

[–]-Soggy-Potato- 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Not the main focus on my reply but hey Ho, only mentioned it as a passing thought

I said it because I’d assume the father would have more of a say than the mother in terms of circumcision because presumedly the father would also be circumcised and hence have a more personal experience

The father essentially would have more in common regarding the procedure since mums... typically don’t have penises

Like how typically mothers would be the ones to talk to their daughters about female specific experiences like menstruation because it’s something that specifically relates to the mother, and something the father does not

It feels weird to explain because in context it felt like common sense, people with more in common / go through a similar experience would have more authority in the situation

And anyway, it’s no less anecdotal that what other people are saying, my main point still remains that a wider context is being ignored in favour of an oversimplification

i don't think that's true. i think most parenting choices are seen as women's duties in our society.

In the past the more significant decisions about most things would be decided by the men

It’s not a stretch to suggest this notion is still at least semi-present when paired with the idea I mentioned before

But in hindsight it ultimately doesn’t really matter, what’s most likely is it’s a joint decision from both parents, who probably share the views of their society and think it’s okay to circumcise their kid

It doesn’t actually really matter and idk why the original person felt the need to single out women when it’s a cultural issue, something which has nothing to do with gender

it’s probably a mix of the two, my idea and the other ones coming together to form some of the motives / reasons for circumcision

If you’re talking about abortion, it’s different. People who are against abortion believe the fetus may be sentient, hence abortion is murder. While not circumcising baby boys isn’t going to hurt a sentient being. In most case the parents aren’t even Jews, but christens, and their own religion speaks against it

Can someone explain the purpose of a circumcision please

[–]whatafoolishsquid[S] 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Please read the article. Circumcision serves no practical purpose. It became popular in the Anglosphere during the Victorian Era because people believed it would keep boys from masturbating, which isn't even true.

The original ritual has been practiced in ancient cultures worldwide, and anthropologists like Joseph Campbell have linked it to the male body's sacrifice to his tribe. In other words, it teaches boys their bodies belong to their tribe, not to them as individuals.

I’m new to this sub and I’m trying to understand. I was circumcised as an infant and nothing was damaged. I know that in some rare instances things can be but it’s not common from my understanding. I’m curious why this is treated as such a serious issue that it warrants such strong language in various comments. I am 100% trying to understand and not start an argument. Totally willing to see where I might be wrong or have a blind spot.

Hello, and first of all welcome.

When we are talking about the damages circumcision causes, it doesn't necessarily mean that the penis isn't functional - though as you said there are cases where circumcision is so damaging that the boy/man actually has painful erections or can't have even maintain them when for instance it is done very tight. However just because one can have and maintain an erection, doesn't mean that the penis wasn't damaged - the foreskin isn't an "useless end of skin" and does have a purpose -, as skin tissue is cut resulting in loss of sensory nerve endings (other comments mentioned it better than me). Amongst other things, the gliding mechanism of the foreskin is lost and the glans loses sensitivity and keratinizes over time due to being always exposed. As anecdotal evidence, some men circumcised as adults said that intercourse was less pleasurable for them (though some said they didn't notice a difference), and many men who "restore" their foreskin report an increase in sensitivity and pleasure after their glans is covered again and dekeratinizes, though the new grown skin doesn't have the same nerve endings and function as the original foreskin. Overall circumcision does more harm than good as it doesn't have real benefits but plenty of downsides, and at this point it's just a mutilation done for cultural and esthetic reasons aggressively pushed on and allowed by misinformed parents.

This is not to mention the psychological damages from circumcision - I am genuinely happy you don't feel bad about yours, but many men experience trauma related to their circumcision. The psychological damage is not only on the emotional plan (feeling robbed from an intimate part of your body) as studies also found that circumision in infancy can actually alter the brain. I'm on mobile so these are just links from the top of my head, sorry, but they're good entry points on these issues and I'm sure you can easily find more information or discussion on the topic if you want to read more about it.

Such traumas are often downplayed, and minimized with "it was done to you as a child so you can't even compare what you currently have to anything, therefore you're complaining for nothing", "it's easier to clean", "I prefer it that way" and similar rhetorics. Not only are those flawed, they also contribute to the feelings of grief and anger many circumcised men feel - we are angry because we don't know what we are missing on -, some of the apologizers going as far as telling men they should be thankful for it as they won't have to do it as an adult (you know, when they actually have a choice), as if it was a mandatory procedure. But, if your pinky finger was cut when you were a child without your consent, do you think feeling at the very least robbed of something would be an inappropriate reaction? Wouldn't you be mad if people told you "your hand works just fine you can still write and grab things; it's easier to wash your hands; you don't even know what you're missing on so stop complaining; you should be thankful your pinky was cut early; it's an useless finger; I prefer 4 fingers hand" and so on? Are ear lobs an "useless patch of skin" we should forcefully cut on infants for esthetical reasons, too?

All in all, it comes down to bodily autonomy which should be an indiscutable right for children, but in many places the law only care and protect one gender - rightfully calling one act "mutilation", but calling the other a "medical procedure", even though the reasons are outdated and myth busted. I'm open to discussion and I hope I have answered some of your interrogations!

Male circumcision causes terrible damage to the male penis, and psychological problems that can last a lifetime.

It's no surprise circumcision for purely frivolous reasons in confined to the USA and a few other countries.

In western Europe there is now a growing movement to outlaw it as genital mutilation, on a par with FGM.

Circumcision ablates the most sensitive parts of the penis.

The damage is to the foreskin, the foreskin has a purpose and removing it is equivalent to removing the labia and clitoral hood of a woman.

[–]geminia999 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well as a person who was also circumcised, I think that I would prefer to have a choice, to even comprehend what I could of had. My foreskin was part of my body, and I was never given any say or consideration in the matter.

And If I'm honest, I'm not angry at it, I like my penis (though I recognize now that it's got some scars), It's good that it's not worse, but I feel like circumcising a baby is like cutting off a pinky toe for a baby. Sure, they may not need it or really ever recognize that it's gone, but it just seems like a pointless procedure done that could wait until the child can consent.

I get it's hard to miss something you've never really had, but I think that's why it's important we try to stop it from happening to anyone else, so we can give them a choice.

[–]Frosty-Gate-8094 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

'Nothing was damaged' is an understatement.....

You would have had a healthy, functional body part which was removed from you, without your consent.

You were lucky you even survived the procedure. Coz, 100 male infants die every year due to MGM. (in USA alone.)

You were lucky you didn't suffer any complications. Coz 1-5% is the surgical-complication rate.

I dont see any apparent benefit of circumcision, may be a decrease in UTI from 1% (in uncircumcised males) to 0.5%.

It would decrease penile cancer rate. (which in 1 in 100k males).
Or decrease HIV transmission (by 33%)...(its 0.9% to begin with)

Both these (last two) benefits could have been obtained if the same procedure was done when you were 18 yrs, with your consent.

This brings me to the main point... 'CONSENT'.

Your private parts were violated, for unnecessary reasons without your 'consent'.

In a society that focusses on 'consent'... This is barbaric. Boys are taught that their consent doesn't matter. And when they put their learnings into practice, all hell breaks loose.

This is how you define 'gender equality'? (Not feminism--feminism is not about gender equality).
But even a normal person who believes in gender equality , who believes in my body my choice, Has no business supporting MGM or FGM.

Adults with consent - fine. Infants. - NO.

get the point?

Google “functions of the foreskin.”

Google Cold and Taylor foreskin

Google foreskin coverage index.

The damage is variable and permanent. Some men are cut so tight they have no slack skin.

You might not feel like it’s a problem because you had very little removed, particularly if you have coverage over the corona of the glans.

It’s similar to the clitoral hood which prevents chaffing against underwear. and makes masturbation/intercourse more pleasurable.

The most pleasurable part of the mutilated penis is the scar. That tells you enough that it’s fucked up. Intact men have pleasure on the frenulum, tip of foreskin (ridged band) and inner foreskin. All of these are damaged or removed by mitigation

I think we have got it arse about: bodily sovereignty rights ensure that consent is only required to waive those rights, the default is protection. We need to teach people about the universal rights that are in place and how only consent can be used to vary them. It's an implicit No unless consent is negotiated. Consent implicitly can not be negotiated with minors or incapacitated persons.

When I was in nursing school i was doing my pediatric rotation. The doc on duty that day was also my own gynocologist so I knew him well. He grabbed me that day and said "come on and help me do this procedure".

Being the good little nursing student I was, of course I wanted to help the doctor.

But he didn't say what we were going to do...just said come help me do a procedure.

So here I am all exited. and then he takes that little newborn boy, straps him down on this body board for little babies, and without warning, he used that thing and whacked off his foreskin!

omg!

That baby screamed and cried. It was awful. I was incredulous and couldn't believe he did it without at least numbing the area. his respone? babies won't remember the pain!

Well he sure knew he was in pain at that moment.

I feel very strongly about this issue.

When my son was born, I opposed this barbaric practice. I was up against a mother and controlling in-laws who opposed and argued my stance for weeks.

The mother in law said, “if it is the money I will pay”

The sister in law, who didn’t get her way in the end said in an angry tone, “well fine, he will just have an ugly looking penis then!”

His mother was open to a circumsicion being performed.

I stood my ground on the issue for my sons well being and sadly, not to diminish the victory but it is practically one of the only issues where I was successful in this dysfunctional “family dynamic”.

Last time I heard of a female circumcision it was performed by a muslim doctor who nearly went to prison for LIFE. This is what her defense stated:

Asked to compare the procedure done by Dr. Nagarwala to male circumcision that is common and accepted in the United States, Smith answered,

“I think it’s far less invasive or extreme [than male circumcision], considering the amount that is removed. Male circumcision removes about 100 times more which is why I can respect people who are against all genital cutting but not people who have their sons circumcised and then say what my client did is wrong.”

I know this is going to seem off-topic (It's not about circumcision) but I ask that you hear me out first.

I always get into arguments regarding boys not being taught consent when they're kids (which, according to them, is the cause of all the raping). I always thought this argument was weird because a child (not just a boy but a child) wouldn't have the brain capacity to understand rape or "my body, my choice". So, in this regard, (according to them), they were NEVER taught consent.

But think about what they're saying in regard to a child's development.

Kids are taught to share toys, snacks... etc. A kid cannot simply take something from another kid unless they ask to share. In other words, unless they get consent. As they get older, the concept of consent becomes more serious (stealing or shoplifting for example). And then, "my body, my choice". The concept never goes away.

So can you seriously tell me that children have NEVER been taught consent? Sure, they haven't learned the word, "Consent" but the concept of permission is ingrained in their development. Any parent or teacher has to teach that otherwise, how do they participate in their development?

And then I get called a sexist.

It's so sad that parents do it for non medical and non religious reasons. Even if circumcision was done for religious reasons it was done different compared to modern day Circumcision which is Pharisaic Circumcision (Brit Per'iah). Biblical Circumcision (Brit Milah) which means A covenant in Hebrew called (brit, also pronounced bris), and circumcision is (milah) – hence the ceremony is called (brit milah). It only involves cutting a very small portion of the foreskin so the foreskin will still be able to protect the glans compared to modern day circumcision or Pharisaic Circumcision (Brit Per'iah) which removes the entire foreskin and the glans of the penis is damaged so it loses sensitivity and "When the mucosa of the glans are exposed to chafing, the glans protects itself by keratinizing[3] (similar to a callous). Foreskin keeps the glans internal, as it is supposed to be. The more the glans keratinizes, the less it can feel" . The reason Biblical circumcision was changed was because people back then who were circumcised was extending their foreskin using a foreskin restoration device so that they will appear uncircumcised so because of this the rabbinate made a new type of circumcision which is modern day Circumcision. This type of circumcision was not part of the covenant with God instead it was a man made circumcision that involves removing the entire foreskin along with the frenulum.Periah consists of tearing and stripping back the remaining inner mucosal lining of the foreskin from the glans and then, by use of a sharp finger nail or implement, removing all of the inner mucosal tissue, including the excising and removal of the frenulum from the underside of the glans. The objective was to insure that no part of the remaining penile skin would rest against the glans corona. If any shreds of the mucosal foreskin tissue remained, or rejoined to the underside of the glans, the child was to be re-circumcised.

This is a much more radical form of circumcision. It was dictated by man, and is not the biblical commanded circumcision rite. Its introduction has a bizarre history. The rabbinate sought to put an end to the practice of youths desiring to appear uncircumcised by stretching the remainding foreskin for social economic benefits and for sports competitions. By introducing the painful and debilitating "Periah" they would obliterate the foreskin completely such that proper circumcised Jew could not disguise "the seal of the covenant". From this point in Jewish history, the male's glans is directly affected by the circumcision procedure, and the denuded glans and traumatized infant will heal with considerable nerve damage and loss of sensitivity. Again, it is important to note that this is not the Covenant circumcision of Abraham defined in the Bible. Jesus was circumcised the Biblical way which is Brit Milah and he was not circumcised the modern way or Pharisaic Circumcision (Brit Per'iah). All of this information was found on websites that I got using the Google Search Engine. Please spread the word on this type of unnecessary modern day Circumcision unless required medically. Also Modern Day Circumcision was an attempt to get males to stop masturbating. God made every single male on this Earth with a foreskin so it's natural, It protects the penis so absolutely no one should remove a person's foreskin unless REQUIRED MEDICALLY. You can see how Biblical Circumcision looks by using Google and you may see a statue of Michelangelo David which appears uncircumcised but he is actually circumcised so that goes to show that the glans of the penis is still protected.

[–]hdyeuwjqnqn 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I disagree. Consent is important. What I don’t like is how most people exclusively target boys for educating consent. Even if more men rape than women (which I’m not sure of), we shouldn’t blame everything on men because I don’t see the reverse happening to women. When it’s the reverse and women does something bad more than men it’s never the same.

I know what you’re trying to say, but statutory rape doesn’t really involve consent in the same way. I’m not saying it’s not screwed up, it just doesn’t equate to male-on-female rape in this one very specific circumstance

[–]homo__schedule 41 points42 points43 points 5 years ago (33 children) | Copy Link

You really think people who rape dont know they're doing something wrong. Any person who is right in the head will stop if their partner says no. People who rape are mentally deranged and educating the mass public isn't going to help. I'm pretty sure people were taught that killing others is bad but that doesn't stop murderers.

[–]-Soggy-Potato- 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Rape isn’t always that black and white though

Consent isn’t about purely saying ‘no’, it’s just as much about definitively saying ‘yes’, be it through more explicit methods or general communication and setting out of boundaries

Saying it’s all about just saying ‘no’ undermines ideas of being pressured into sex, blackmailed, humiliated or other situations regarding the grounds of consent (inebriation or age)

You’re giving people too much credit, entitlement and ignorance are pretty common, and many may not recognise they’re necessarily being manipulative or exploitative, due to the relatively nuanced nature of consent in the context of real life relationships (e.g an explicit yes may not be necessarily in a couple with a healthy sex life, mutual inferred consent ect)

You don’t have to be mentally deranged to miss social queues or not fully understand your partners feelings, not all rape is going to be explicit and violent

People really do need to be educated, or else they’ll make assumptions. With these assumption being based off individual interpretations of sex and consent, something that primarily will come from either parents, or more commonly, pornography

Obviously this can create unrealistic expectations and ignorance around the reality of sex and consent compared to the exciting and unrealistic fantasy set out by porn, or insufficient details set out by parents

Comprehensive sex education is a force for good, assaults will decrease in correlation with ignorance as it goes down. It’s unrealistic to suggest rape is caused by mental derangement when evidently that’s not the case when looking at the more common, less ‘obvious’ instances of rape

[–]Terminal-Psychosis 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You have it backwards.

This belief based ideology is, like genital mutilation, to kill sexual pleasure. It is not based in reality, at all.

Nobody needs to fill out a contract and be minutely specific about every aspect before getting romantic. This kills the romance.

People need to be capable of normal, human empathy is all.

Also, the answer is NOT teaching all boys to constantly ask for permission at every step. The answer is to teach both sexes that no means no, AND THEY ACTUALLY HAVE TO SAY IT.

It’s unrealistic to suggest rape is caused by mental derangement

This is the level of nonsense propaganda that is completely deranged.

[–]-Soggy-Potato- 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But that doesn’t solve the issue I mentioned before

People don’t give definitive no’s because they feel pressured or blackmailed ect

Teaching everyone to just say no leads into blaming the victim when they don’t say no, which is obviously dangerous ground

And you’re still underestimating how ignorant and stupid people can be, some people will need to understand the basics, especially when most media representations of porn and sex are extremely unrealistic like I mentioned before

Just general education about consent is the ideal, it’ll be the more generalisable and easy to apply solution to complications around consent

Then that in turn would expand out to ideas of informed consent and ideas of withdrawal ect. Human empathy still needs to be consolidated by more general rules and ideas about consent.

Not everyone has universal or realistic ideas about sex or consent and only teaching everyone that a ‘no’ isn’t going to have great success when paired with presumptions of entitlement or more general unhealthy notions. Obvious example that still needs to be mentioned is situations such as sleep, where people cannot give an informed no, it’s about understanding and educating people about how the context of consent or lack of can vary, like I said not so black and white

Your idea still leaves too much room for ignorance, and ignorance isn’t going to be the best approach to something as varied and relatively misunderstood as sex and consent. It blames the victim rather than focusing on educating on the types of aggressions, it’s way too simplistic and doesn’t apply to a wide majority of instances of rape

[+]ObviousObservationz -15 points-14 points-13 points 5 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

Yeah. People need to be taught that consent isn't as simple as that.

Most men that were made to penetrate were taken advantage of when far too intoxicated to consent. Many women have similar experiences.

The fact that you think its as simple as you made it seem is a good indicator that more people should be learning about consent.

Edit: people complain that male victims of rape are not taken seriously, and here people are writing off millions of them.

[–]suzuki1369 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We aren't writing off male victims, we are keeping our shit straight. If women getting drunk should be held responsible so should men. And if regret =/= rape for women then regret =/= rape for men.

There's more to consent than just saying yes or no.

But... There literally isn't. Consent is literally " I'll say yes if I want it, no if I don't want it" it's not hard.

[–]Itisme129 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

It's literally not though. If an underage kid says yes, it's not actual consent because they're too young.

I get where you're coming from, but things aren't always as simple as they may appear. There's always nuance and edge cases that have to be considered.

[–]Drippinice 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Terminal-Psychosis 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

The whole ideology & propaganda campaign around "consent" is FAR, FAR more than teaching that statutory rape is a thing.

The brainwashing pushes the idea that no sexual act is acceptable without express active, verbal affirmative. It's ridiculously intrusive and goes against everything romantic attraction is made of.

You can absolutely have the former, which is a-ok, without the latter that is completely destructive.

No means no, AND YOU HAVE TO SAY IT. That's all that's needed in the latter case. Personal responsibility is key here. The whole "consent" psy-op pushes exactly the opposite, and only in one direction. It is massively sexist to boot.

[–]homo__schedule 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Alright I guess i could see that.

[–]Appropriate_Deer5129 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't get this logic. If what you say is true, then that would mean that if a 14 year old has sex with another 14 year old, since underage children cannot consent, they both raped each other?

[–]I_am_an_adult_now 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Are you being purposefully dense

[–]BeastlyDecks 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

True. But the logical conclusion of that is that a lack of consent is different from saying no. An unconscious person can't consent and can't say no. Therefore the dichotomy is false.

[–]Terminal-Psychosis 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Because it is wrong to rape an unconscious person,

does NOT mean it is necessary to ask permission for every minute step in a courting ritual.

The whole "consent" propaganda that is pushed is designed to completely kill all natural sexual attraction. It is extremely invasive, awkward to the extreme, and that such is exclusively aimed at men and boys makes it extremely sexist as well.

What is needed is to teach that no means no, and it is everyone's responsibility to ACTUALLY SAY IT if and when needed.

This is the part that is completely ignored, on purpose, with the abusive "consent" brainwashing that is pushed today.

All personal responsibility (for the woman) is completely denied.

[–]BeastlyDecks 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Okay but your dichotomy was still wrong unless you mean to tell me that fucking someone unconscious is not rape.

This article is about respecting boy's and men's consent.

The fact that society approves male genital mutilation without boy's consent is a testament to the fact that boys are not taught about consent properly..

They are taught that their consent can be taken for granted.

And to prove it, you gave examples where 'woman gives consent' and 'man misinterprets'....

What about the other way around?
What happens when man doesn't give consent and woman misinterpreted?

Or you are one the 'feminists' who believe erection is consent?

You approach testifies the problem with feminism..

Only woman's consent matters. Man's, or even infant boy's, consent can be taken for granted.

Kudos to your sense of gender equality...

People like you are the reason feminism can never be trusted with gender equality.
Especially sensitive issues involving men's lives like F on M rape, false accusations, suicides.

Agreed, but this isn't a reason to not educate people on consent.

In fact this is even more of a reason to educate them on consent. Teach them that infant cicumsicion is done without consent. The more people that understand this the more likely things are to change.

And to prove it, you gave examples where 'woman gives consent' and 'man misinterprets'....

Sorry, what? When did I do this?

Damn, I don't even call myself a feminist, and now I'm THE representative of feminism!? Wow

If you aren't feminist then you will probably understand what I am about to point out.

Most people in society think that gender equality means women's rights. That's what feminism is.
And feminism has nothing to do with gender equality.

Men's rights are either neglected or come secondary to women's/girls rights.

I ll point out to the double standards in your original comment first.

Teach them that infant cicumsicion is done without consent. The more people that understand this the more likely things are to change.

Teach whom? Young boys?
Or those who get it done?

Infant circumcision is LEGAL. The authorities need to be taught this. Not children. Why there is no call to ban circumcision?(except from MRM)

What do you even mean by 'teaching young boys that MGM was done without consent'?
Are you going to tell boys that they were violated. And its ok, because that is legal?
But they are expected to be bigger person and not do it other people, especially women.

Is that how you expect them to understand consent?

Sorry, what? When did I do this?

Following are the headings from your given links.

"Situational and Dispositional Determinants of College Men’s Perception of Women’s Sexual Desire and Consent to Sex: A Factorial Vignette Analysis"

"College Men’s Conceptualization of Sexual Consent at a Large, Racially/Ethnically Diverse Southern California University."

This is the first. Sentence

"Many sexual assault education/prevention initiatives focus on sexual consent. However, little is known about how key recipients of such endeavors (i.e. college men) understand sexual consent."

Men are described as 'recipients' of consent. (Implying that women are providers).

Is that how sexual consent is defined?
I thought both people have to mutually consent.
Is this the quality of peer reviewed papers today?

No wonder Einstein was born 100 years ago. No Einstein will ever dare to born in such bigoted society today.

Correct way to teach boys consent is by respecting their own body. Lead by example.
Teach them that they can say NO.
And respect their no, when they do say it.

Once boys know how their body is respected, they'll know how to respect other people's body.

Children dont learn by indoctrination. They learn by experience. A culture that thinks its ok and 'legal' to rape boys and men, will create men who are no different from these rapists.

[–]thatspositive 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Most people in society think that gender equality means women's rights. That's what feminism is.   And feminism has nothing to do with gender equality.

I'm not going to get into a discussion about what feminism is or isn't. I find these discussions wholly unproductive and pointless, and irrelevant to the topic here.

Teach whom? Young boys?    Or those who get it done?

Everyone. Everyone should be taught about consent. It should be as universal as "please and thank you", brushing your teeth, and all other basic life skills needed to be a healthy functioning member of society.

Infant circumcision is LEGAL. The authorities need to be taught this. Not children.

Again, EVERYONE should learn about consent. It's a failure of our education system that more people do not understand this.

What do you even mean by 'teaching young boys that MGM was done without consent'?  Are you going to tell boys that they were violated. And its ok, because that is legal?    But they are expected to be bigger person and not do it other people, especially women. Is that how you expect them to understand consent?

You're misconstruing my words. If more people actually had a solid understanding of what consent ACTUALLY was. Then the rates of MGM, rape, sexual assault would decrease because people would understand that these things are done without consent.

Now I'm not sure what the best way of educating people on consent is but im NOT saying we go around telling boys they have been violated, and that "it's okay because it's legal".

Uh...That's...not what that means. They're saying that college men are the recipients of sexual assault education/prevention initiatives that focus on sexual consent.

Which is objectively true...men are the main recipients of these programs...

Teach them that they can say NO.   And respect their no, when they do say it.

Yes, exactly?

Once boys know how their body is respected, they'll know how to respect other people's body.

Children dont learn by indoctrination. They learn by experience. A culture that thinks its ok and 'legal' to rape boys and men, will create men who are no different from these rapists.

I'm not disagreeing with any of these statements. But the idea that educating boys on consent is null/void because of cicumsicion (which again, is wrong) is ridiculous.

[–]Frosty-Gate-8094 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ya I agree that circumcision itself does not preclude consent discussions...

But the violation of male consent goes far beyond circumcision alone..
It happens at every step in life.

I agree that we should educate everyone about consent...

Start with changing laws that directly violate consent. (Like MGM).
And common law marriages. (If they didn't consent for marriage, they aren't married).
And forcing non-biological fathers to pay child support. (He never consented for the baby, did he?).
And converting compulsory conscription to voluntary conscription. (Voluntary implies consent).

Once we have done this, we have right to tell boys that.
Otherwise its hypocrisy. That's what was pointed out in the original article.

[–]Terminal-Psychosis 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The entire ideology of "consent" is completely backwards.

There is no reason for minutely examining and asking for permission on every single act. This kills all sexual attraction, and is specifically designed to do so, much like genital mutilation.

What is needed is to teach people that no means no, AND THEY ACTUALLY HAVE TO SAY IT.

[–]Digitaldreamer7 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

[–]Digitaldreamer7 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Coercion is regret, unless it's under threat of death, they head no reason not to be responsible for their own actions.

The other two are clearly null because no yes or no could be given. Physically on 2. And legally on 3.

[–]thatspositive -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Coercion is regret, unless it's under threat of death, they head no reason not to be responsible for their own actions.

That's a gross oversimplification. You can coerce people in many ways other than threatening death, as long as you are manipulating someone into sex that they wouldn't otherwise consent too, then it's rape.

[–]Terminal-Psychosis 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No means no, and everyone is responsible for ACTUALLY SAYING IT.

Your ideology is extremely dangerous and abusive. It opens the door to endless false accusations.

You've got things exactly opposite. We need to teach people to stand up for themselves is all.

If you are in a situation where you are uncomfortable, it is YOUR responsibility to get out of there.

Only if that is completely impossible, if you are being physically forced, is it rape.

Your whole "consent" propaganda is massively sexist, and totally abusive. This crap has gone so far, you seem to think this lop-sided nonsense is actually a good thing.

You seem to have completely swallowed the cult teachings without putting one bit of intelligent thought into what you're repeating actually MEANS. The consequences of your sexist ideology cause FAR more harm than good.

Instead of demanding males ask for enthusiastic, verbal permission, for every minute step in a courting ritual,

all that is needed is, "no means no", and you have to actually SAY it.

The whole "consent" ideology pushed lately, completely ignores personal responsibility, and is aimed at destroying all sexual attraction, nothing else. It creates victims instead of preventing them. It teaches that regret = rape.

It is completely unnatural and awkward to the extreme. It also fails completely at actually preventing rape. And, of course, it is aimed exclusively at men and boys, making it extremely sexist.

That’s some dangerously deranged thinking.

[–]BlueDoes2 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Circumcision is due to religious and health reasons. That's it. It's not about some sort of excuse to abuse women. If people legitimately think men use the fact that they are/if they DO use it as an excuse to be an ahole, screw them.

[–]Digitaldreamer7 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

What about homosexual men? Intercourse between them becomes up to 200% more dangerous when both of them aren't circumcised. What about their partners that are of the other gender too? [–]mattimus_maximus 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I think it's worth making sure this is communicated correctly to be heard. Talking about it in terms of the hypocrisy sounds like a deflection. It could easily be taken as meaning you will take their stance seriously once they drop the hypocrisy and care about little boys too. It can cause people to not listen.
I think a more productive approach is to say "You're absolutely right, this is a subject that needs to be talked about and we need to make sure we teach about consent as part of preparing our children to be adults. While we're talking about consent, here's an aspect which is often neglected in the conversation, bodily autonomy of children", and then start talking about stopping circumcision.
Instead of saying "Yes, but...", say "Yes, and..." so we're joining with them rather than appearing to be opposed.

[–]Shiiroun 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

This is a very valid point and I couldn't have formulated it better. One issue isn't exclusive to the other.

On a related note, I got from some comments the sentiment that boys were taught on consent in a way like "the girl must agree for you to have sex" instead of "both people have to want it", so I thought the "hypocrisy" comes from here : basically we don't take boys' consent into accounts.

But yeah it's important for sure to be careful with this kind of comparison (though I have the feeling that opposants to men's rights purposefully try to misinterpret anything we say anyway)

[–]mattimus_maximus 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't think they are purposefully misinterpreting it, I think they have a skewed view about things and a negative bias in their expectation of things that MRAs say. Everybody looks to match experience with expectations so if there is any way that things can be interpreted to fit their existing point of view, even if it's a stretch, then that's how they will interpret it. Fitting something to expectations is an easier mental task than processing new ideas and adjusting your perspective.

As to the only teaching boys about it being one way, I suspect that is a problem, and I think the "yes, and" approach is still a good approach to that. They aren't wrong about consent needing to be taught to boys, and where things are today is better than they were 10 years ago. We aren't where we need to be yet, and there's more to address including addressing it from the other direction too.

[–]Shiiroun 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's a good explanation actually. I still do think there's quite a fair share of people who do tweak what they read/hear for us on purpose (making strawman arguments and such), but it makes sense that the everyday person would be enclined to doing it unconsciously (especially with all the anti-male/anti-MRA rhetoric that is rampant online).

I really like the "yes, and" approach as it really shows that issue A isn't always exclusive to issue B and it prevents accusations of us "trying to undermine others' issues".

New to this sub, what’s the argument around circumcision?

[–]ranman1990 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's a (almost always) medically unnecessary cosmetic procedure that, on top of occasionally having such effects as removal of the entire penis if botched bad enough, has many negative effects such as massively decreased sensitivity, irreversible damage to the area, and just the general pain it causes the child but no positive effects (except for very very rarely) and is typically done either because religion or "so he will look like dad". Some people try to cure hygiene but the effects are entirely removed by washing the area as you would any other area and the difference is by less than 1 per 100,000 people even without washing. In addition, it is done without the consent of the child. It is most comparable to female genital mutilation which nearly all western people recognize as being awful and outlawed in many places (as it should be).

[–]whatafoolishsquid[S] 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is not a health issue. As stated in the article, circumcision became popular in the Anglosphere in the Victorian Era because people thought it would keep boys from masturbating. It serves no medical purpose, removes the most sensitive parts of the penis thereby reducing pleasure, and can cause even further damage and death.

What about India where only a certain percentage of population is circumcised, and yet Boys are not taught concent

Then it wouldn't be hypocritical to teach the other percentage of the population about consent.

The article is about the hyprocisy in chopping off parts of someone's body without their consent and then trying to teach the victim about consent

[–]samandruk -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Alright. Yes, of course circumcision is a horrible practice that needs to end, but comparing it to sexual assault is beyond morbid. Calling it hypocrisy is dangerously irresponsible. Everyone needs to be taught consent.

[–]datonemattdude 9 points10 points11 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

The definition of sexual assault is unwanted contact of genitals, or un wanted contact of a sexual nature. This is much worse than sexual assault. This is also worse than most forms of rape.

[–]samandruk -5 points-4 points-3 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I don't remember my circumcision. I don't know anyone that does. I am not, however, saying that there is that does remember. Most men and women remember sexual assault in all its forms for the rest of their lives. I cannot fathom the mental gymnastics it takes to have that little empathy for rape survivors.

When I was seven, I was raped and molested by one my friends mothers. I will never be rid of those thoughts. They have scarred me deeper than any moil could.

My parents wanted me to have the option to be a practicing member of the Jewish faith. That was a mistake, but millions of parents have made it. It needs to end immediately.

To say, however, that it is more traumatic than rape is inhuman. I know that you will refuse, but you should feel shame for typing what you did.

[–]SnooBeans6591 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I don't remember my circumcision. I don't know anyone that does. I am not, however, saying that there is that does remember.

A rape of a toddler is still rape even when they won't remember. Same with rapes of unconscious people as in the case of Brock Turner. Sure, being able to remember the assault may make it worse for the victim, but not remembering it doesn't make it less of a rape.

Age, and the subsequent lack of recollection, is the only difference you are pointing at.

[–]samandruk 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nothing?

[–]samandruk -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Are you discreditting intention? Circumcision generally isn't a power trip. It tends to be for religious or health reasons. There are plenty of outdated medical practices all over the world that are more harm than good.

I also never said that Circumcision isn't an atrocity, but intention can be damaging. It is sometimes a greater and longer lasting source of pain than any physical injury.

The difference is feeling powerless for the sake of faith or medicine for the individual, regardless of its effect, versus powerless for the sake on one person's selfish, momentary power trip.

This argument is a perfect example of how men's rights misunderstand, often willingly, the concept of the patriarchy. It damages everyone. All that it is is a collection of traditionally male traits that we have attached to success and power. It's why men are expected by themselves and others to "man up" and endure this sort of pain. Only emotional women would share their pain.

Both sides share this common enemy, but this is why men's rights is a flawed reaction to feminism, and not a legitimately helpful movement for men. Just be a feminist, and continue to promote men's issues, while blaming society, and not a relatively new movement for the 1000s of years of torment to both sides.

Detach stoicism, power, and other harmful 'masculine' traits from men.

[–]69_Watermelon_420 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

It is sexual assault. Arguably the most common form of sexual assault. Now, is it rape? In most cases no.

[–]samandruk -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Did... you read the comment I wrote in response to the other person?

Of fucking course it is, but rape is worse. I'm telling you first hand as a victim of both.

[–]69_Watermelon_420 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

That’s circumstantial (ha) evidence at best. You’re making the claim that rape is worse than MGM. You need to back it up. Also, most Muslim seats require MGM for adulthood. Hundreds of millions of men do remember.

Also, I love how you belittle MGM to a “mistake” because other people do it. That’s not good reasoning at all.

[–]samandruk -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Man. There really is no comparison for pain. The idea that both human atrocities can be compared is disgusting. And thank you for belittling my rape.

[+]needletothebar3 points 5 years ago [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

the parts of your penis that got amputated were no more "extra" than the penis parts you have left.

the parts of your penis that got amputated were the parts that provide the most pleasure during sex.

if you think washing your dick is too much upkeep, i pity your dental hygienist. proper oral care takes 20 or 30 times more effort than proper genital care.

[–]Oblivity0 -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Pleasure? So what. If it’s less I have to worry about, I don’t care. Since everyone is always angry about everything, how about you see a psychiatrist or a hooker to vent. And by the same content, should I be made y tonsils were removed because I kept having issues with them? Should I be mad that I don’t have any wisdom teeth? Should I be made I lost my balls... wait that’s fucking you. Grow the fuck up. Pleasure? Life isn’t sunshine’s and rainbows simp.

Circumcision is not even close to as bad as pumping kids with hormones and forcing them to be transgender.

[–]aweirdoenby -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Nobody is forcing kids to be trans

[–]pletteezy 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It’s weak parents who will allow their 7 year old to convince them they want to be a tranny then go ahead and proceed with hormones.

[–]aweirdoenby -3 points-2 points-1 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Nobody wants to be trans. And parents aren't weak by accepting their children as transgender

[–]pletteezy 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes they are. Very weak parents. Children do not have the mental capacity to determine gender identity.

[–]NoUsername189 -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]RunChariotRun 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

... it kind of sounds like this title should be “Teach more people the value of consent so they can understand how nonconsensual infant circumcision is and stop it”?

Shouldn’t boys have opportunities to learn and understand how to consent (or not) to what is happening to them or what they want to do with their bodies just as much as anyone else? I don’t think anyone should be deprived of the ability to learn about consent just because others are having things inflicted on them :(

I'm glad I'm cut. I think it should be a choice of the parents.

[–]Inchan255 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Explain you position. You can always get circumcized by your choice when you grow up.

[–]Thedirtyanonacct -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I agree you could, but I've only known one person that has done that and it was a medical necessity. I wouldn't undergo the procedure later in life as the cost benefit just doesn't make it worth it. Do it before I have the ability to form memories though and I'm virtually unaware it happened. I understand that some would say it has the potential to cause psychological trauma but I don't think those claims are warranted. I'm glad I'm cut, my friends that aren't wish they had been. Should I become a father my child will be cut as well.

[–]Inchan255 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Adult circumcision costs 3 times as an infant's if I am not wrong. IMO parents already burdened with hospital bills will find it pretty heavy. Also,I don't think most people are scared of such minor surgeries when they grow older. Idk why you think the claims about trauma are unwarranted, they are pretty grounded in truth. Circumcision also destroys nerve endings, thus affecting sensitivity.

[–]Thedirtyanonacct 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I was under the impression that it exposed the glans therefore increasing how often it was stimulated thus decreasing sensitivity. I'm not saying your arguments are invalid. They are perfectly valid to convince someone not to circumcise their child. Though not convincing enough that the practice should be banned altogether.

Also, I'm Canadian so cost isn't an issue. I shouldn't be in other parts of the world but that's a different debate.

[–]whatafoolishsquid[S] 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

I'm glad you're so blase about permanently removing one of your child's body parts without his consent for literally no reason other than that yours was removed.

EDIT: I also don't believe for a second all your friends that aren't wish they were. For starters, they could just go get circumcised if they hate their foreskin so much. Of course, I've never met a single man that felt that way because any man with a foreskin knows first hand what a functional and important part of the penis it is and understands what would be missing without it.

[–]Thedirtyanonacct -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Is a parent not wholly responsible for their child up to the age of 18? That would include making choices concerning the child's wellbeing before they are deemed mentally competent. Soon after birth seems to me to be the best time to perform a circumcision (because of no memory) - I assume it is medically the best time because that is common practice. The well meaning wishes of the parent should be respected. They don't need consent as they are responsible for the boy.

Re: eddit - nobody is going to and get circumcised later in life unless it is medically necessary because nobody wants to A) experience the pain and be aware of it. B) go without full use of their dick for however long the healing process is. So it's not worth it to change, but could they go back and make the decision themselves they would opt to be circumcised.

[–]whatafoolishsquid[S] 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, responsible for the child's WELLBEING. That doesn't mean a parent can just do whatever they want with their child. By your logic, if you wanted to cut off your baby's ears, it's okay because you're the parent. And an ear is a lot less functional and important than foreskin.

[–]presidentbruh 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

alot of your argument sounds like people don't want to do it as an adult so just make them when they can't say anything. you can always get cut but you can never get foreskin back (fully, there is alittle you can do although it's not the same).

[–]ranman1990 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Why glad and why should parents choose?

[–]Thedirtyanonacct -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Being 100% honest, mostly for aesthetics. Partly because of cleanliness but like others have said it's not hard to stay clean - however my dick will never smell like head cheese when I'm camping, and I like that. And partly because as a teen a friend required one and I would hate to have to get it done later in life. Do before I can remember it, and let my parents decide because they have the right to make my choices for me before I am of age.

[–]ranman1990 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thank you for replying despite the previous downvotes. I feel though If an adult wants it done I have no issue, but cases where it is a medically necessary procedure number fewer than cases where the procedure is botched. I also feel the "my parents can choose for me" argument is not very good one. We dont let parents choose if their new born should have a tattoo or drink liquor. Also, I dont think it's nearly as hard to not have the smell you mention as you think it is.

[–]Oklawolf 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

How much healthy skin could someone cut off of your genitals before you wouldn't be glad anymore? I'm cut, and have never once been glad. Especially now that I live in a place where this is no longer seen as having any medical benefits whatsoever.

I remember also thinking it should be parents' choice. After researching the subject more thoroughly, I could no longer support that position in good conscience.

Regardless, I'm not here to make you feel bad. If you're glad, more power to you. Just realize that not all of us feel the way you do.

[–]Thedirtyanonacct -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If I'm a baby, the limit would be to the point that it would impede function I guess. I understand your side, that you didn't make the choice and it carried implications for the rest of your life. But I trust my parents to make choices for me. I would like to be circumcised on the condition that it happens to me as a baby. All the power to someone if they don't wish to circumcise their child but the option should exist. The practice is not as barbaric as some would make it out to be.

[–]Oklawolf 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How would anybody know how much could be removed before functionality was impeded, though? How would our parents know? How would the doctor know? When it's done in infancy, are we not denied any possibility of knowing this?

I saw that you're located in Canada. So am I (Sask). Our circumcision rate was down to 32% country wide in 2009, down from about 60% at peak. Source here - this is the same data the Canadian Pediatric Society uses for its own data here.

This should all be considered before one passes this surgery on to the next generation, no?

The bottom line for me is, I was perfectly willing to live and let live when I found out I was cut. I have an anxiety disorder... I don't like thinking about this stuff, let alone talking about it. Mine didn't go well, but I cannot assume my experiences are universal. However, the first thing I did was take a deep dive into the science and have found it riddled with bias and methodological flaws. I loathe junk science, especially when it comes to passing off cultural rituals as medicine. I've come to conclude that this is the case here.

I do hope you look into this some more when it comes time to make the decision for your own children. We'd want to do this anyway for any other surgery, why not this one?

Regardless, have yourself a good week. Take care.

[+]BlueDoes20 points 5 years ago [recovered] (4 children) | Copy Link

as an avid male rights support.... I don't get why men hate circumcision so freaking much. I am, and I don't think it's that big of a deal, maybe using some sort of numbing substance would be good, but other then that it's more helpful then not...?

[–]THEAdrian 16 points17 points18 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

more helpful then not

In what way is mutilating a baby helpful? If it was helpful to mutilate little girls would it be acceptable? So why is it acceptable to mutilate little boys?

Let's just stop mutilating children. Full stop. There's no fucking reason for it.

[–]Jakeybaby125 18 points19 points20 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's really not. The benefits you're thinking it brings have been debunked multiple times

[–]Digitaldreamer7 9 points10 points11 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There are no benefits to the child. It literally only keeps the parents from having to clean the baby more during a diaper change.

[–]Panderjit_SinghVV 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That’s like objecting to ending slavery because there might be economic benefits to it.

Medical benefits aren’t even an issue.
