I'm old enough to remember cons having a seedier reputation and my con going friends occasionally bragging about getting laid at cons. It isn't every con but pop culture and geek culture conventions are known to be places where sex happens and I don't reaply have a problem if sex workers want to get involved, honestly.

If anything, the modern image of fan conventions as sanitized family friendly places where parents can bring their kids to watch corporstions market the new hot thing is a much bigger problem. At least the hookers are cosplaying and engaging in the community and can actually do events there. I would rather be struck dead on the spot than watch The Rock dispassionatley unveil a new Black Adam trailer and then leave as soon as he's done though.

And of course cons are full of sex. A convention for any pop culture is just to sell stuff. Games, movies, shows etc. I worked on conventions in some of the employee areas. You have no idea how hardcore the after closing parties go there.

These cons were never family friendly. I went to my first anime and manga con almost 20 years ago. It was always sexual. It's part of the culture.

Nah, OP is wrong on this one. Not that there isn't a bunch of OF girls at these things, but that they're pretending to be into these hobbies to get more fans.

A good chunk of the girls who are hard-core fans in these niche hobbies also do cam work. There's a huge overlap, and this has always been the case even before there was a real business incentive.

Even before onlyfans they were called camgirls, and would have nudes online, etc.

Boxxy was basically the exact same as these cosplaying onlyfans broads from like like 2004.

How is this an issue? You get to admire sexy cosplays at a con, and there is 0 obligation to subscribe to their onlyfans after. You would literally have to go out of your way to find their accounts, like you've done.

Cons have always had a bunch of creepy people, and the ones who don't charge for their dubious attentions represent a much bigger threat than sex workers... ultimately a sex worker probably isn't there to impose more than an awareness of what they are selling. There's certainly a discussion to be had about what sort of content should be allowed both in programming and in fan activity...and that discussion necessitates some amount of consideration to the economic realities of the organisers trying to cater to as many different sorts of attendees as possible. It is in a way oddly similar to the problems of organising Pride activities because you really want both the focuses...family friendly focus and sexualized focus... but not at the same time and place. But making it just about sex workers attending stinks of moral panic.

Don’t hate they’re just doing good business. They know what demographic of men are most likely to shell out cash for them and they are catering to their needs. I don’t see the problem with this. There is the more systemic critique of what we’re doing as a society to make so many people lonely and disconnected to the point that they feel they have to spend money on OF but these women are not creating the problem. In fact they’re making the problem less bad for the men that they are selling services to.

Your whole post stems from a few assumptions:

1) All women dressed revealingly at conventions want male attention. (Lesbians and women who are comfortable in their bodies apparently don’t exist to you?) - Further boiled down to the age old trope of “women dressed revealing are asking for it.”

2) All women who dress revealing must have an OF or do porn, that you must find to “catch” them.

3) Women with OF make every moment of their life about advertising it- even though you admit you had to go out of your way to find their pages?

4) Women can not be both sexually desirable to you and “legitimately nerdy.”

5) Merely existing while showing your body off is apparently advertising? Conventions have always been slightly sexualized to full blown sex crazed (DragonCon after sunset basically)- it is a parent’s job to know what parts of the convention they’re taking their kid to, if it’s appropriate for their age, and how they want to discuss what their kids see. As you’ve been to one convention IRL, and have no kids, you don’t have the best or most firsthand REAL experience to discuss this. But I’ve been to cons for years as an underage tween/teen, to adulthood, and nothing sexually explicit was ever marketed to me until I was old enough to only find it because I was seeking it out.

GTFO. I’ve been a Magic the Gathering playing, LOTR/Dr Who/Star Wars/Trek watching, RuneScape addicted, WoW dork since like fifth grade. My first experiences on the Internet were learning to draw by tracing my favorite manga panels, fanfiction.net forums, and streaming anime on the Wild West of YouTube long before copyright laws caught up. Don’t forget accidentally discovering hentai smut dating sims on Newgrounds in middle school, lmao. My first cosplay was a Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya one in eighth grade at Anime Boston.

I used to be flat chested, short hair, glasses, a little more visibly “gay.” No one questioned me being in those spaces.

As I got older, I got more feminine. Longer hair, grew curves, work out, wear contacts, learned makeup. I’ll wear a Bean from Disenchanted cosplay all covered up the same weekend that I wear my slave Leia— doesn’t change that I don’t want to be approached by men in either for more than a compliment of the costume. I don’t have an OF, will never have an OF; it’s all just for me and my own fun.

This all boils down to being mad women you were attracted to we’re not interested in you and have learned to profit off the hoops and games the patriarchy tries to put us through.

I know your brain will explode at this, but sometimes people want to feel sexy and nerdy. I feel most comfortable dressing revealing at cons in a way I don’t outside of them because I’m in a nerdy party environment where if someone approaches me we can just talk about my cosplay. It’s the same vibe as “Halloween is the one day a year a girl can dress like a total slut and no one can say anything”— it’s fun to wear things you don’t normally get to wear in public. Basically all cosplayers are exhibitionists anyways— whether it’s mild or sexy. Yes, we obviously want attention for this costume we put work into wearing out in public! How is that a surprise?

What you wrote is nothing new and is just the same rallying cry from sexually frustrated nerds angry that “attractive women” are entering “their” spaces without being sexually available to them, with an OF twist to also make it extra judgmental.

I remembe the first year I went to AWA, there was a big to-do because a hooker was hanging out in the hotel (outside con space) finding clients as they left the con. Can't remember if she was arrested or just escorted (pun!) off the premises, but either way the activity was definitely not tolerated. Meanwhile the gals from cosplay deviants were handing out cards in the con itself - and I'm sure they weren't the only cam girls doing so.

This has been common throughout history. Any large event where men congregate: Wars & Battlefields, oil workers on the Alberta oil patch, and yes, now comic-cons, prostitutes rightfully sense a business opportunity and flock there.

History doesn’t repeat but it rhymes and comic-cons are now just following a long tradition of sex workers travelling to areas with lots of men.

It's weird I used to be big into gaming but don't remember con culture such a big part of it. Guess that's just me as I never got that much into online/youtube gaming and the communities that sprung up out of it.

Tbh, despite the deserved backlash again gamergate...I always judged women who were deeply invested in gaming culture negatively and if you were one of those who listed anything related to gaming in her dating app profile it was almost an assured left swipe from me. There is just something I find wholly pathetic about women who peruse communities full of desperate incels to make their money or get their sense of self esteem.

Like, we give cleat chasers and golddiggers shit but at least they're chasing after established men 😂 I can't imagine investing all that shit into some costume just to entice some dude who barely washes twice a week. From my understanding some former pornstars have gone wholesale into streaming because its an easy audience to exploit. I can't blame them but it does make you wonder how said mentality effects the wider gaming world.

I love that the most common advice for men is to go out and socialize. To do those things that make them happy and see if they meet women with whom they hit it off. But heaven forbid those men complain that the women they meet at those gatherings are literal prostitutes who are only in it for the money. How dare those men expect that the advice who was given to them is actually working!

Its to attract those men who would get sucked into the image that the possibilities of establishing a relationship with someone who has similar interests as them, not knowing theres a different end goal behind it.
