I generally think sex dolls are mad cringe, but I watched a mini-documentary on it that kind of softened my opinion on the men who get them. One of the guys genuinely seemed to love the doll. They are replacing what society considered to be LVMs off the SMP & RMP entirely, which sounds great in theory but the removal of their suffering meant that the validation market will take a hit (as their suffering from sexless does in significant part fuels the validation market as far as the lower tier validation goes). I think society is subconsciously aware of that to a certain extent, hence all the fearmongering and pushback.

I think sex dolls could potentially appeal to impossible or illegal fetishes, since as far as I'm aware, they can be designed to look any sort of way. So for a few select people they might be a godsend. They could also potentially achieve a standard of beauty and perfection that no human being could feasibly reach, though there will always be people who have disdain for anything they deem as fake.

I don't see sex dolls becoming popular for the average person, especially not any time soon. From what I have seen, they are sort of in the "uncanny valley" with their lifeless unblinking stare and stiff bodies. They might look like a real person for a split second but then something about the way they stay awkwardly still and their blank expression will be sort of disturbing and give it away. It's expensive too, a well made sex-doll can be thousands of dollars. If you're spending that much money anyways, at that point maybe having sex with a real person and not just masturbating into a person-shaped piece of silicon would be preferable.

I think they can be popular... provided the cost goes way down and the quality goes way up. Right now it costs as much money as a used car to get an uncanny valley latex human that doesn't move. It's only really an option for guys that want to fuck a specific type of woman, have a lot of extra cash, and don't care about any other factors.

I think if the price drops down to say, 500 a unit, and the quality increases to where they look a bit more natural and maybe have some other functions, you'd see way more mass adoption. But this is one of those things where a viable commercial model with mass appeal is always 10 years away. Because it'll always take a good 10 years to work out the many involved problems like manufacturing and any possible upgrades and how to get it all working properly.

The technology, and all the other bits of technology you'd need, are already advancing in the direction you'd need it to. But how it would probably go is a bunch of other goods that aren't meant for sex get there first like medical robots or smartphone voice commands, and then someone just refits that into a latex skin with some fake hair and sells it as a sex doll. They'll probably be more popular and accepted in the future, but I doubt that they will become the norm in the future. No matter what something like a sex doll will always be expensive to make and purchase, so they will still be very much a niche item.

It's inevitable that some women will probably feel threatened by them, but for the most part that rhetoric will likely come from a loud minority like radical feminists, misandrists, and conservative women. I'm a guy so I can't really speak 100% for women but I really don't think that living, breathing, thinking women with a heartbeat have anything to worry about as a whole.

There will definitely be some problems that arise from them. The main situation I could see a woman actually feeling threatened by a sex doll is if she's in a relationship with a man who is putting more time and effort into his sex doll than his partner (and forgoing sex with his partner to masturbate with his sex doll). Even then if there were no sex doll he could just as easily be doing something else. The real issue there would be the man is a problematic person to begin with, or there's some other problem in the relationship that is going unresolved.

I don't see myself ever getting one personally. I'm 25 M, and the thought of purchasing a sex doll has recently been on my mind from time to time.

For context, my last break up was 10 months ago, and the ex was with the love of my life. Her and I had two relationships to be exact, one during mid 2016 to late 2017, and then again from late 2019 to mid 2020. In between those two time frames, we were no-contact, and I had been involved with around a dozen different women. During that time, I had gotten physical with quite a few of those women, and came to the realization that I simply do not enjoy sex at all unless I have a genuine romantic connection with the other person. Every time I tried to enjoy sex with a fling or a hookup, I simply couldn't, and frankly felt dirty and disgusted with myself. I only genuinely enjoyed intimacy again during the second relationship with the ex. This, however, eventually fell apart due to emotional cheating on her part with someone from her past.

After the last break up, I've decided to stay away from dating for a few years and focus only on myself and my career. I need time to emotionally recover, and to be able to trust someone that way again. In the mean time, however, I have a pretty high libido and just jerking it gets real old real fast. I don’t think sex dolls have much appeal to anyone with options. However...once they can create a sex robot that can completely fool the eye, that can converse naturally, and can engage in sex....I think relationships as we know them are mostly done. If you give a man access to sex with an attractive woman, minus all the potential for nagging, arguments, and confusion, I struggle to imagine why a good amount of us wouldn’t just spend the money for the new Chrissy Compliant bot and just get on with living our lives. I’m not saying it’s a good thing, or even that I would do it, only that I feel strongly that a lot of men will.

I think they are already popular given how much media attention they have had in the last 2-3 years.

I think they are still a niche though and might remain that way for several reasons. (full disclosure i own 4 lifelike dolls)

Stigma : no matter who you are or what you do if you are known to have a doll then people will make assumptions about you. Sometimes these are going to be correct and most of the times these are going to be wrong. Even if you are not public about it you still look to others (read comments and articles on the internet) to verify where you stand in society...in other words unless the dolls are popular enough you'll need thick skin and ignore the noise.
Expense: They are still as of writing now fairly expensive they are quiet an investment so even if you're considering one and have the money you are going to be concerned about buyers remorse. Unlike other products you cannot return them to the shop if you don't like them.
Uncanny valley: even a new doll owner is spooked by the dolls a little in the first few weeks until the brain adjusts to the difference between a doll and a human, for many the "creepyness" stops them even considering it in the first place.
Regulation/laws : Because of a lack of research and sex still being a taboo legislators can end up making knee jerk decisions because they don't want lengthy procedure or due process due to the topic being embarrassing. Stigma means that no politician has the balls to be seen as publicly endorsing the dolls. This means that should laws be pushed to criminalise the dolls it might be hard to fight them off because it'll always be one sided. It goes without saying that the popularity of dolls could be reduced drastically if you are facing prison just for owning one and/or they lean on companies selling them/importing so you cannot get them in the first place (Alibaba has now banned doll sales to the US for example)
