I've been thinking about it and I don't think the debate over consent will ever be fully resolved. These are the 3 reasons why I just don't think it's possible.

Reason #1 - Consensus Among Women

The Aziz Ansari case was a perfect example of this. If you followed that story, you probably noticed that even among women, there was no real consensus on what lines Aziz crossed and whether or not the girl actually gave her consent. Female commentators on the left, the right and everywhere in between had widespread differences in how they felt about the event.

There are some women out there who will outright ask you for sex but they are by far the minority. Most the time, girls will only give some form of implied consent. Which in itself is very subjective. Some girls will initiate sexual contact, some will give you the googly eyes, some will just hang around you hoping you shoot your shot. Every girl's version of consent differs.

Anecdotally, I've had girls roll their eyes at every third word I say all evening, then strip with no prompting in private. Girls who said no in the moment, and then ask later why I never pushed the issue more. Even girls who will proposition you for sex and freeze up when you take them up on their offer.

There are simply no reliable, consistent or concrete signals that every woman displays that says they want physical or sexual contact with a guy, even if you're good at reading people. And the most likely signals that girls show are very much up for interpretation.

Reason #2 - Situational Differences in Consent

To make Reason #1 even more confusing, the same girl may give consent in different ways at different times.

She may be very prudish when sober, but she'll literally try to rip your pants off after a shot or 2.

Or she might be standoff-ish most the time but downright frisky in times of emotional vulnerability.

Women vary so much from day to day that it's pretty difficult to predict her responses unless you've spent a lot of time with that particular person. Even then, they still find a way to throw a curveball every now and again.

Reason #3 - Consent Across Levels of Attractiveness

A female Comedian once said "Don't you just hate getting sexually harassed by guys?... Unless he's hot". This basically summarizes the whole concept of this point.

Women on average, will accept vastly different levels of escalation depending on how attractive she deems the guy to be. Which is complicated even more by the fact that attractiveness is already extremely subjective.

Tl;Dr / Conclusion

I left out a lot in an attempt to keep this short and most of this is based on my personal dealings with different women over the years. But this is basically why I think it's impossible to reach a consensus on what consent is. Consent is incredibly complex and will vary among women, her mood, the situation, and how attractive she personally finds the guy at hand. Collectively, women themselves can't even define where the lines are.

All these factors combined make it incredibly difficult to determine what consent looks like with any type of consistency.
