This has to be talked about more. As someone who recently graduated college with a metric fuck-ton of debt, unable to find a job even slightly related to what I went to school for (and what I desperately want to do)...I've realized the only way to truly find any sort of success and fulfillment is to take life by the balls and make things happen...teaching myself to code, reading every book I can get my hands on...talking to as many people who've started their own business...these are the things that have really made me feel like I was "doing something" to contribute to my life in a meaningful way.

I know it's said a lot on here, but TRP really does help with far more than women...your career is far more important than that, at least to start with, and it's at least as applicable there, if not more.

Agree. I will never go back to working for anyone other than myself. The hardest part, though, is quitting your job and taking the plunge. If you can break through that membrane--the safety membrane--then your whole world opens up. I feel like most businesses fail because it's easier for dumb people to break through the "safety membrane" because they don't comprehend all the risks involved. But if you are smart, understand the risks, and have plan, then it's worth taking the plunge.

I spent the first year and a half perpetually feeling nauseas because of all the uncertainty and problems I was constantly facing. That part sucked, but it's kind of a right of passage. Now that the business is in a sustainable place, though, I'm actually living life. I am genuinely alive. There are no dumb structures or hierarchies around me. The only structures that exist are the ones I build. There's no wasting time on BS, meaningless work. Everything I do has an actual purpose. And there's no ceiling on earnings potential.

I'm not sure where I saw this but apparently your salary in an average firm/company is about 1/3 what you bring or produce for the company. 1/3 goes to overhead and the last 1/3 is profit. There are some companies where the CEO is making 3000x or more what an entry-level employee makes in a year so the profit part might be much more in some cases.

I think this was just another awesome aspect of taking the red pill for me. You start to see how you're a beta provider to your boss and your government and how schools, media, and other institutions just try to sell the middle-class dream to put and keep you in this role. Powerful stuff. Gonna definitely look to start my own business or build passive income/assets first as soon as possible. Anyone that can should read Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. Its a great read.

The only assumption of this sub that I have a problem with is that you should pursue money. Money is only one source of power. Often its a very potent source of power, especially in the USA, but it's an external source of power. When you have money, it becomes very difficult for people to see you as powerful in other ways, whether it's physical power or social dominance. The money becomes your primary identity, crowding out other qualities you may have. Any social dominance you have is assumed to be the result of your money. This is especially true when it comes to women, who have difficulty seeing past the money. Often this is why rich people are cheated on more. By all means build things, work hard etc but money comes and goes. Focus more on relationships and provide yourself with memories that you will have til you die.

This is very true.

Some of the biggest betas I've ever known were serious lifters, and I was one of them. I'd say it's like what athletes say in every sport: it's 90% mental 10% physical.

Why 10% physical? Because it's like a base level that you have to be at, but at the higher levels virtually everyone is at least at that base level.

And so true on business. I did the 60+ hour work weeks too, it ruins your body because you just can't work out. Especially with a commute, which most people have because you can't easily select your employer based on location.

But it's rough with your own business, always have to stay sharp, always have to network, always have to look out for your business and yourself first. It's a tradeoff. It does take serious balls to do it, hence why women fail at business most of the time.

What I love about sales is you know your value/worth to the company. This isn't a fuzzy number that is debatable like a Marketing Managers value. This is, I brought it $10M in sales last year and I am unapologetic cashing in a $300k paycheck. There is a certain freedom in that that is unique to sales. I work from home, I set my own schedule, I speak to my manager for 30 mins every 2 weeks. My manager can't get a hold of me for 5 hours? Who cares? When I do talk to him he apologies for bothering me. Friends are in town and want to catch a ball game during the day? Done. You want to check out a new restaurant downtown, I bet you can find a client that does as well. Sales solves all problems - if you are bringing in sales, you are untouchable. Fuck those chumps that brag about how many hours they worked last night at the office. I hate those guys.. you're inefficient. If I can get the job done in 2 hours and it takes you 6 you kinda suck. I also love that there is none of that ass kissing to management that I feel like happens in an traditional office job. In your standard job, everyone is scared of their boss and will suck him off to get that gold star or an atta boy. Everyone's competing for that 7% raise or rare promotion. Fuck that. In sales the manager generally makes on par with the average senior rep and less (sometimes much less) than the top sales guys. Think of that for a second, it changes the power dynamic. It's genius really.. and this is the difference between sales and consulting- where it's all about working your way up the promotion ladder as quickly as possible- good sales people don't necessarily make the best managers. Sometimes sure, but why take your best sellers out of play by encouraging them to manage people for better pay? What I've seen is the average sales guys usually become managers because they want a more steady paycheck, with less risk, less upside.

Sales is the closest you can get to owning your own business. In fact that's usually what's its called. You own a territory or book of business and you decide how you want to sell. You control your destiny. Working sales for a company provides you with the infrastructure .. sales support, marketing, a brand (which is HUGE), a product (ok, this is probably the biggest) .. so you can focus on what you are good at: selling expensive shit to large corporations. Mad respect for entrepreneurs though. Balls of steel. They have to do everything at first: build, market, raise money, sell, support, manage and they get paid peanuts .. all for the chance of striking oil - Extremely high risk, extremely high reward. For comparison, if your good, I'd say sales is medium risk, high reward.

I actually am seeking to become a consultant and work contracts after my current project is done. What kind of skills would you recommend I work on honing in? And the type of mindset I should put myself in during my day to day to further hone in those skills?

I'm about at that level now. I've been saving up for about a year and a half with minimal spending. I'm looking at freelancer rates in my industry, and the pay is significantly higher if you're willing to go out and get the work yourself - and there is a lot of work. Not to mention that being on my own schedule will, I estimate, make me about 2-3x more productive.

Would you be willing to make a post outlining your steps in greater detail and initial experiences?

I agree 100%. Started two businesses this year. IMO this is much more important than lifting, with one caveat. Lifting prepares you very well for starting businesses. Confidence, energy, discipline, etc are all key traits for business success, which lifting improves.

I try to haggle the initial offer. You get more leeway for this with age and experience. If they offer you a job, they want you. The cognitive dissonance is too strong for them to back out if you ask for more. If you're getting paid less than you're worth, walk.

My motto is, "companies don't give a fuck about me. Therefore, I don't give a fuck about them." Money in exchange for work. Ironically, this motto made me work more effectively. Obviously also increased my salary.

Unless you're in a union, most people work 50+ hours at work, and with people that have any amount of authority, its already 60. 60+ isnt really special to be honest.

Finance and people in consulting like me routinely do 80-100 plus hours - and its not for the pay. If you do the math, people working at Mcdonalds make more money per hour. We do it for the exposure to high level individuals in the hope that a nice juicy exit opportunity rears its head.

I should mention that it isnt a good strategy anymore given the fact that there are so many people in these industries now that exit opportunities are getting pretty crappy. Some do strike out on their own, but most people - just like in every industry, will be working for someone other than themselves.

Did you include pension and benefits in this calculation? At least where I live (not US) these can be huge and you actually do need at least double your employed income to get to the same level.

Also you certainly will work longer hours and vacations will be difficult and you will probably always have to work couple hours every day. You will have less time for say lifting and other hobbies.

All I'm saying is: Be sure to make correct calculations before quitting your current job and opening your own business.

Being employed for a boss does not equate with being a beta provider for him. You can be alpha and assertive in a career even as an employee.

True that success with being your own boss has way higher rewards, but also it has higher risks and higher waiting period till those dollars start coming to your pockets and pay off the initial investment.

In short, I wouldn't equate being red pill with being your own boss.

I work a regular job but I have a set of skills that will let me start a side business with relatively little monetary investment. It should be a good second income and no boss/owner to get a cut. It should help at my primary job too since if I have some money to fall back on, I'm not as dependent on them. I can have greater confidence in negotiating better terms. Plus starting a business up should look good on a resume. Last but not least, the work is something I believe is actually important, helping people avoid a bad fate that befell me. They say to believe in your product to sell it effectively and damn do I ever.

It's taken me a few years to admit it, but I'm addicted to my paycheck. My boss treats me like shit sometimes, a lot of the time I don't get my full penalty rates, but it's a weird position that can be taken away at a whim. My boss can cut my pay by about $60,000 per year without even doing any paperwork. He has enormous power over me so I work to endear myself to him and take his side in discussions, and bust my arse for him. I'm a bitch, I'm his bitch. Do I want to be his bitch? No. But I look at the $3,200 that went into my bank account for last WEEK'S work, and ask myself what I'd have to do for that elsewhere. Sometimes building someone else's dream isn't mutually exclusive with building your own.

This is great, but a bit broad stroked. Not everyone WANTS to be a business owner / entrepreneur.

For example, I work for a company. I love my job. I make decent money. I have a company car (w free gas for everything), work from home, HOURLY. A lot of times, I dont get a call all day, leaving me free to do whatever I like (example, I was at the gym from 5am this morning, right up until I was on the clock). The people I work with are phenomenal, manager is a leader, not a boss (theres a big difference). I could literally do this the rest of my life and feel proud and accomplished.
I may be the exception, but money is NOT everything. If you do everything just to chase that dollar, you become a slave to it. I dont have any problems working overtime, but I damn sure get paid.

Networking with successful business owners is the easiest way you can become financially independent and not worry about what you will do if you get fired. Investing in the stock market will only net you a 10% return if you're lucky. Same thing with investing in real estate. I've invested in small businesses where I made my principal amount back within 6 months. One in particular (A restaurant one of my family friends opened) cost $300k (Of which I put in $30k) between renovating the property, furniture and liquor license in Oct 2013 and is now worth over $1.5 million and does $60k/week in revenue. Just off that one 30k investment I make as much as my salary for my 9-5 (defense contractor). Of course there were times when I invested in a business that collapsed within months, but I was able to recover more than 50% of my investment. The best way to find these opportunities is to network with people who are self-employed and run their own business, nobody wants to take the risk of putting a huge chunk of their cash into a business or taking out a huge loan, they are always looking for investors and silent partners. There's a risk but if you are smart the rewards are far greater than the risks.

Meh, there is the other side of the coin too. Sometimes starting a business is not worth it for many reasons.

Im 42 yrs old and I have been around the block a few times. I am comfortably working my 8 hrs a day, collecting a steady pay as an engineer. Good pay I might add, enough to comfortably provide for me and my family and still have enough left over for shit I want on the side.

I have seen many people start businesses to only fail in the long run, and those that do make it are slaves to that business, sometimes putting in upwards of 16 hrs a day, being all unhealthy and stressed out all the time, so in essence to me its not worth it.

While yes, money is nice, its not the most important thing for happiness, you just need enough to be comfortable. I can say that im well in the top 20% of earners and that is quite enough for me. I work my 8, come home with absolutely no thoughts of work and stress. I have excellent benefits, bonuses, 401K matching, and the work I do is rewarding.

So yeah, be a slave to the man? Or be the slave to the business? Same shit really.

Being self-employed doesn't just require balls and dedication, it requires a novel idea that you can make money off of. Not everyone is creative enough to come up with something like that. Also, in the country I live, the majority of startups fail within the first year, so people aren't too eager to start businesses, only if they think their idea is bulletproof.

So yeah, this post is great motivation, but if you have a stable office job but no marketable idea, it's idiotic to take a plunge into total uncertainty. If you have some groundbreaking idea, save up for it, then start working on it while still keeping your office job. If you see it working, then you can start thinking about quitting your day job. You don't want to quit, then see your business fail, leaving you with no outlook for the future.
