I just feel I've won at something, but I'm not sure what. I found the fact that some of these eyes belonged to obvious celebrities a bit distracting, and had to gauge from the tone (side long glances tend to indicate caution or suspicion) of the photo what the experimenter was getting at (rather than thinking, "this is Ben Affleck looking a bit uncomfortable about the paparazzi at some public event").

Yeah, the women's photos in particular are modelling photos, so the message is diminished. Also, some of the photos of the older men seem to focus on naturally hooded eyes and bags under the eyes, causing a squinting effect that is natural at that age for some facial types and represents no state of emotion. However, as the person is squinting, we're supposed to gather this means an uncomfortable or suspicious emotion.

Wish they told you which ones you got wrong.

Edit: anyone else notice Keanu Reeves and Helena Christensen in there?

I found a lot of the female expressions puzzling. Most of them looked like models, who's main purpose is to emote what the photographer wants. Turns out the pics came from British magazines, ergo, there's a high chance the women aren't emoting their true feelings (i.e. "smizing"). I thought they should have gone with average people, standardized lighting, no make up.

I scored 30 out of 36, which the site claims is above average. I felt like I just guessed on a bunch of them, though, as I have trouble looking at most people's eyes in real life due to social anxiety issues. I am male and in my 40's.

I don't think this is a useful test for a number of reasons:

A lot of these will be hard to judge because the photos appear to be have been taken with a flash - that will cause the pupils to constrict. That will cause warm emotions to seem like cold ones.
Some emotions are straight up only distinguishable when you include the nose and mouth.
A lot of these seem to be models. It's notoriously hard to fake emotion in the eyes. I got a strong read which was different from any of the options for a bunch of these. I only found the right answer via process of elimination - e.g. "What would someone trying to fake this emotion do?" What I actually thought they were feeling was completely different and to be honest, probably more accurate.
Likewise with people wearing make up - if your eyes are covered in make up, it distorts the emotional message of your eyes.
A lot of emotions are only distinguishable from the eyes based on where the person is looking, e.g. "serious vs. ashamed." (That was one of the options). Serious people look you in the eyes, ashamed people avert their eyes. When they're asked to look at a camera, not a person, the emotion will be extremely hard to distinguish.

I've taken this test before and remember getting a similar result. I think I got a lot of these right by process of elimination. I'm not a social person and spend a lot of time alone but do think I read social cues fairly well.

While I think that the test is interesting and probably a decent-ish metric for what it is, it is still only a test that will likely correlate with emotional intelligence, not a measure of it in itself. Plus as people have pointed out - these are obviously models/actors and therefore not naturally displaying emotions, and the researcher/researchers/consensus has decided what they are expressing rather than asking the person themselves.

I think that people often don't realise that emotional and social intelligence are learned as much as they are innate, probably more so. Some people (particularly those on the autistic spectrum) will find it more difficult than others, inherently. But for the most part you learn emotional intelligence by engaging with others over a long period of time - learning how behaviours and expressions relate to how a person is feeling. That's why younger people tend to do worse.
I have worked in jobs that heavily rely on emotional and social intelligence, and I feel that while I may have been pretty good to start off with, I also feel that mainly I have learned those skills through them being necessary for the work I do, and actively trying to learn them.

Had a bit of trouble with some of the words though (partly translating them and partly making my mind up how that emotion looks). Also ashamed and guilty were really fucking difficult to differntiate for me.

Would love to see which ones I've read wrong.
