I am reminded of that case from a decade or so ago (could be longer) where a wife won the lottery, kept it secret from the lawyers when she filed for divorce and hid the win.

When the husband found out she won, he sued her.. and won 60% of the winning, and she had to pay his lawyers fees and a fine. Basically soaking up all that was left from her win.

Courts don't take kindly to either spouse trying to hide assets during the divorce and you will lose the assets hidden if the court finds out.

Are the consequences harsh? Yes; that's the point. Courts do not want to incentive the behavior by making it into an "Ah shucks, I got caught" thing and want to punish the party because they're actively insulting the court and the judicial system. Hiding assets during these proceedings is illegal.

Once the guy had found out, he was so broke he couldn't afford representation. He struck a deal with a legal party that if they put forward his case and won they would get 50% of any award!
