Okay some backstory: I discovered FDS more than a year ago and it helped me realized that my relationship wasn’t a tragic romance, but a story of lovebombing and slowly escalating emotional and physical abuse. After three years of his isolating me in a new town, I returned to my long term home and my friends who hadn’t heard much from me for a couple years.

Slowly building back my female friendships I have hung out a little with, let’s call her Alexa and her boyfriend Rob. Alexa is a bad ass. She was consciously single through her twenties as she was pursuing her girl boss dreams. In our thirties she has a successful business, and seems to have finally started a relationship with s HVM. However, Alexa and I go climbing and she reveals that she is struggling with some red flags like his being a divorced dad of an elementary age child, his tendency to drink on weeknights, ditch his girlfriend to go to the bar alone, and lie (in one instance only) about hanging out with half-naked exes. She tells me she is unsure about the relationship, but weeks later he has moved into her home. I don’t hear too much from Alexa, but I give her a little space as I think she is in love and wrapped up with her new man.

Then recently, at a community event, she comes up to me seemingly out of the blue and tells me her boyfriend has told her that I am overly “touchy feely” with him and can I please enforce some physical boundaries.

I actually panic at this moment. This blindsides me as I have been completely celibate and not ready to return to dating yet after my trauma. I do NOT trust or even really like men at this moment. I barely hug my closest friends. If I was ever even friendly to Rob, it was only in the context of his being my old friends boyfriend, so I know she is being manipulated. The idea I would even notice him like that is laughable to me and also points to an inflated ego in his part. (I don’t even think he’s cute) She has dropped hints before about blaming his issues on “her insecurities” and it seems like he is doing whatever he can to capitalize on those.

And that’s where things stand. I think I can recognize that my friend is going through emotional abuse because I was there myself very recently. However I think Alexa thinks her clock is ticking and she needs to make this man “the One” after being single for so long. How do I get through to her? She is a HVW but she is fully in the matrix with this guy and I’m afraid if I reach out to her and tell her I’m worried about her, explain DARVO and give her some resources to learn about emotional abuse tactics and gaslighting, she will take it as a criticism of her self from a “jealous” friend and disown me. I love her she is a HVW, and my outdoor partner in crime, and I am so worried she is a victim of abuse. Our close friends confirm that the relationship may be toxic, but I don’t think they have as much experience as me recognizing abuse. How can I help her without losing my friend?
