How are we defining chivalry?

I treat everyone near my orbit about the same - the way I'd want to be treated. But apparently, that's better than many have ever experienced before.

It's a bit awkward when they feel like they need to punish or reward me for it, you know?

Anyways, the way I often see chivalry spoken about, it's the kind where a guy treats someone he barely knows like she was born yesterday and any men she knows like they're dirt or invisible. Some women go for it, I'm told, but at least from what I've seen...

It doesn't get the noble knight very far. It just comes across as a series of potential warning flags.

I went on a date with a guy recently, and after the date he kissed me, proceed to open my car door, and then once inside he kissed me again and told me to text him when I got home to know I was safe. I would have done anything for him after that. So, yeah it definitely doesn’t go unrecognized.

I like men who display basic courtesy towards people in general. I don't care about display of courtesy towards women just because they're women. So no, I don't reward men for chivalry in the later sense, but hope that women who value it do.

Calling it chivalry is always a red flag for me, since it implies that they are only kind to women because they are women. Respectable people are kind to anyone, regardless of gender. If you're holding doors open for women, you should be holding them for men as well.

What do you consider chivalry?

People who save people's lives are applauded and held up as heroes. People who work hard for the good of others are sometimes seen publicly but are often deeply appreciated more interpersonally.

Obviously a lot of courageous and courteous acts go unseen. But isn't the whole point of chivalry that it isn't done for a reward? Or for valor? It's done because it is honorable.

I don't do chivalrous acts for a reward, I merely do them for ethical reasons, although I have stopped doing them for women after getting into trouble several times.
