55,000 academic citations?! In computer science?! Good fucking Lord, talk about knowing your shit.

I'll never be able to understand people who think like that. You can't have sex with someone you hate. You can't fake a boner.

I worked at Yahoo and saw exactly what he was talking about. They expanded a technical department and every woman who applied got the promotion, whereas only a couple guys were hired onto that team. The worst was when I had to escalate things to them. If I got a guy helping me he was a literal genius that I would be in awe of. But if I got a woman it would be a mixed bag of maybe this will be solved quickly, but more likely a lot of guessing and a few days turn around.

To be fair, this isn't on the women of that department because they always tried their hardest. This is on the "Yas queen" or "You go girl" philosophy that was promoted by management and especially the cult of personality around female CEO's like Marissa Mayer, Ellen Pao, and Elizabeth Holmes.

My school had very few females. There were many opportunities for them to go to other schools and participate in engineering projects, conventions, scholarships, etc. This was never offered to the guys though, I even asked one of my electrical engineering professors about it once and she just shrugged it off. Then I bought the textbook she wrote for $300 to take my required lab.

[–]heyyy-kiddo 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

When you are required to pay 300$ just to study and also study her published book then i call it dibs mate.

Amazon is full of good engineering textbooks so just use her textbook for lab only if it seems bad. When studying it's ok to use multiple sources.

My company is rabid about hiring female Engineers. Women make up around 9% of applicants to our Engineering grad scheme and yet two years in a row both mechanical Engineering places were offered to women first. Youre trying to tell me that out of the thousands of applicants, the best four were all women? Ironically, all four of those women turned the roles down because they already had offers elsewhere. This caused our chief engineer to ask my female colleague how to attract more women, where he basically told the mechanical engineers that they only got their jobs because women turned them down.

Traditionally male dominated fields like medicine, law and business and now dominated by women, so when are we going to admit that women are just less interested in STEM?

They go out of bussiness. China advances steed fast on all fronts since the Western Industry has other problems ,not innovating.

I really dread what an Asian style engineer taught using the resources in the West can do.

Like you got really dedicated and hardworking individuals by the thousands vs a system that promotes anything else but not performance.

*convicted fraudster Elizabeth Holmes

[–]GodBirb 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. People need to realise that different percentages of genders make up different percentages of jobs. Computer science and engineering is male interest dominated, so why would it not be mostly men in the workforce? Same goes for nurses and women. If it’s female interest dominated, then it’s going to have more women than men.

I’m all for whatever men or women decide they want to do for a career, but don’t shove either side down for no good reason.

[–]heyyy-kiddo 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not the employees fault directly, but more of managements and of those woman that push for the distruction of the meritocratic system.

I also hope the genius guys you encountered left the firm for higher salaries if the glass ceiling was keeping them down.

[–]throwaway67575753 121 points122 points123 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's always been looked down upon. If you point out something that doesn't benefit the people you are trying to engage with even if it's warranted you will be dogged for it.

[–]skolopendron 59 points60 points61 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

But hiring on merit IS beneficial to all people. Some of them are just too thick to get it.

[–]throwaway67575753 19 points20 points21 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not here saying it's not because it is to smart people. However, not everyone believes everything is mutually beneficial, they get their position and don't want to lose it so why would they be actively interested in that? That's why people will push against it regardless of what you feel. Also HCD btw.

Here is what happens when you tell the truth today:

Those are dark times when one can be prosecuted for speaking the truth.

[–]pargofan 34 points35 points36 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

In the first case, the country has already banned the subject matter from study altogether. That's the real problem:

"The report made waves in a country w(h)ere mapping criminals' ethnicity has long been considered unethical."

It's not so much telling the truth but disclosing sensitive info. I don't agree with their stance. But it looks like Sweden already made their bed.

[–]__pulsar 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That isn't sensitive information though.

[–]pargofan 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It is to the Swedes apparently.

[–]__pulsar 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is to the small handful of politicians who took it upon themselves to make that decision.

[–]tenchineuro 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's not so much telling the truth but disclosing sensitive info.

The data was anonymized according to the article, what sensitive data are you talking about?

[–]pargofan 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's in the article.

Giving the ethnic background of criminals is considered unethical over there. I disagree. But that's what Swedes think.

Either way, to then disclose it, is illegal. The researchers knew that what they were doing was a violation all along. It's not as if anyone didn't like the findings and then tried to suppress.

If the researchers found that Swedes commit 99% of all crime, they'd still be violating the law.

[–]tenchineuro 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They say they had applied for and received a permit.

Maybe, but I doubt they'd be facing prosecution.

Another one

[–]tenchineuro 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

  • During the data analysis, Lund University researchers found that out of 3,039 offenders included in the study, 59.2 percent were immigrants, of whom nearly half were born outside of Sweden. The report made waves in a country were mapping criminals' ethnicity has long been considered unethical.
  • Professor Kristina Sundquist of Lund University, Sweden and two of her colleagues are facing prosecution by the Board of Appeal for Ethical Review, a national body under the Swedish Ministry of Education, over research that found that most rapes in Sweden were committed by immigrants.

  • Patanjali Kambhampati, a professor in the chemistry department at Montreal’s McGill University, believes the death knell for the latest grant was a line in the application form where he was asked about hiring staff based on diversity and inclusion considerations. He says his mistake was maintaining that he would hire on merit any research assistant who was qualified, regardless of their identity.

  • “We will hire the most qualified people based upon their skills and mutual interests,” Kambhampati wrote on the application.

  • “I’ve had two people say that was the kiss of death,” said Kambhampati. “I thought I was trying to be nice saying that if you were interested and able I’d hire you and that’s all that mattered. I don’t care about the colour of your skin. I’m interested in hiring someone who wants to work on the project and is good at it.”

https://sputniknews.com/20211130/swedish-researchers-face-prosecution-for-study-about-immigrants-prevalence-in-rape-verdicts-1091128385.html

Here's the thing, let's say the national average of rapists in your country was 2 per 100k.

If you bring in 100k immigrants, and within that 100k a good 10 of them are rapists (5X the national average), in that scenario, immigrants would make the overwhelming majority of rapists within your country.

That being said, is it fair to brand all immigrants as being rapists, when knowing that it's only 10 people per 100k fit that category? Would their skin colour not be used an indicative by the locals to be treated like a rapist?

I'm not saying that this information should be kept secret. But I can completely understand why the Swedes are so careful with this topic. It's not that they're "took woke" to handle the truth. It's just that most people don't understand how general statistics work and they this information is ripe for misuse to fuel prejudices.

I remember applying the UofW for grad school a couple years ago. My GRE score was 3-4 points higher than the average accepted for MIT.

I got my rejection letter within a week; normally it takes a month or two. When I eventually saw who got accepted, it was mostly women. Keep in mind for my major-Chemical Engineering-is higher than average for women in STEM at roughly 20-30%. Women still were overrepresented there, as well as intern programs for chemical engineers at a major industrial gas company-which I also applied to and was rejected immediately. The intern class that year and the year after had not one single white male; every one was either female, a person of color, or both.

I met some of these interns. Granted they were fresh out of college, but they didn't have better GPAs than me, nor did they have the technical or industrial experience I had, and when going over a simple heat exchanger project one didn't seem to know anything-but she wore very tight pants to work. Once I realized she was useless and not really listening to anything I said, and that management had in the past taken my projects and put other's name son it, I stopped helping her(I have no problem mentoring or training, but that's a two way street). I just went straight to the manager and told them they had the wrong heat exchanger because it was sized for glycol and not water.

You would think the next step would be to size the right heat exchanger for water-since we didn't cool with glycol-and get a quote, right? I offered to do all the legwork and the quote-, and they said nah have her do it. The project never went anywhere after that. She was promoted to plant engineer elsewhere, and now is managing accounts for the company. The other intern was my boss after they took my project saving the plant 30K a year and put her name on it, but she left the company after 2 years-which I told them would happen.

All the while, our operations engineer, who was fucking awesome, was being burnt out because she seemed to be the only one who knew how to do her job at her level and was covering way more plants than other operation engineers. She eventually left the company for Amazon.

These people don't care about diversity, or even getting good people. They have metrics for optics to look good, and they don't really look any further than that.

i am ALL for men's rights. I'm a man and have/had my fair share of difficulties because of this idea that men don't need certain things or whatever but like, it's not like men DONT and haven't had things like preference for ages.

if there wasn't a problem with men getting hired over equally or more qualified women then we wouldn't need the outreach for girls and women regarding STEM education and career guidance.

[–]Kinexity 50 points51 points52 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

There is a law for this. You can sue a company if you think they break it. Every time when I see "women treated unfairly" and there is no lawsuit I know it's all whinning for privilage.

You can be treated unfairly by the social culture and norms of a group without it being egregious or notable enough for legal repercussions you know.

if there wasn't a problem with men getting hired over equally or more qualified women then we wouldn't need the outreach for girls and women regarding STEM education and career guidance.

It's funny how you felt the need to say that you are all for men's rights, yet you decide to spit the same bs feminist rhetoric we can see everywhere.

It's basically the « Hey I'm not racist, but ; Hey not all men are trash, but »

Honestly I've layed a bit of an explanation but I deleted it, if you really want to know more about the subject you'll just have to search some ressources on the net which shouldn't be too hard, and use some common sense which I'm sure you have, then you'll understand how silly your comment actually is

[+]Chuseauniqueusername -33 points-32 points-31 points 4 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

why can't I be a feminist and a men's rights activist?

[–]Shadowdragon409 26 points27 points28 points 4 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Because they are currently two opposing forces.

Feminism is actively trying to put women on pedestals and trying to force men to build those pedestals.

Men's Rights are just trying to make everything more or less equal or fair.

[+]Chuseauniqueusername -30 points-29 points-28 points 4 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

the definition of feminism is: the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes. thats it.

[–]Shadowdragon409 29 points30 points31 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Open your eyes. There are very few self proclaimed feminists that actually believe that. Many feminists don't even want to be associated with the movement because of the amount of bad rep it has on the internet.

[+]Chuseauniqueusername -7 points-6 points-5 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

my eyes ARE open. sometimes i wish i were a dumb and blind.

[–]ChiefBobKelso 16 points17 points18 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So what do you suggest about all the people who identify as feminists, but actively advocate against equality, obviously while saying that they are advocating for equality? And all the people who do advocate for equality, but identify as non-feminists or even anti-feminists? Could it be perhaps that the word doesn't actually mean that, but just saying it does is a convenient excuse? A word only means what it is used to mean, after all.

[–]DevilishRogue 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Like the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is democratic? Feminism has consistently fought against equality whenever it has disfavored women on everything from recognition of male victims of domestic violence to gender blind hiring practices. You can't be both for and against equality and feminism is against equality whereas men's rights is for equality. That's the reality of what feminism is and does in practice.

[–]majestic_tapir 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Really? Because Merriam Webster states:

: belief in and advocacy of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes expressed especially through organized activity on behalf of women's rights and interests

Which is not the same as what you've stated at all.

[–]Mustang-00 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Practice and preach almost always differ. Most of these “feminists” use it as a shield to spread hatred directed at men

[–]Ricwulf 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Feminism isn't a definition, it's a socio-political movement, complete with its own ideology and theories. For example, you cannot be a feminist as disagree with core tenets like Patriarchy Theory, it would be akin to a Christian not believing in Christ.

[–]StarZax 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

People have to stop with this god awful argument. Hey did you know that north korea is a popular republic ? Or that China is democratic since it has elections ? That's just beyond stupid. Acts speaks louder than words. I don't see how you could say that people who are blaming men for their own problems or starting trends of #KillAllMen or shit like that are actually for equality. Feminism was never about equality by the way, it was about women's rights, which is perfecty fine by itself. But claiming that feminism is about equality induce that men don't need any more rights about anything, therefore we'll only have equal rights when women will get more. Also guess what ? We basically already have equal rights. Now differences are more profound and it's not about rights.

[–]StarZax 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because by labelling yourself as a feminist you agree that there is a patriarchy of some sort, which men's rights absolutely disagree with. The patriarchy theory is like, the huge fondation of feminism, you literally can't say you are both a feminist and a male rights advocate without being ignorant or hypocrite or schyzophrenic

[+]Chuseauniqueusername -20 points-19 points-18 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

if you had more common sense you'd see that the issue is so much more complex than you realize. Women and girls may seem like they show less interest in stem simply because their parents and educators treat them as if they wouldn't. It's a never ending cycle.

the same kind of cycle that leads men to live sad, depressing lives because people have told them that their feelings and fears are best swept under the rug and ignored.

No. Every parent knows that STEM fields are high paying and have a great future. In my country, parents would be thrilled if their daughter choses to go into a STEM field. But still the female participation is very small simply because they are not interested.

it's not like men DONT and haven't had things like preference for ages.

It is exactly like that and has been for ages.

if there wasn't a problem with men getting hired over equally or more qualified women then we wouldn't need the outreach for girls and women regarding STEM education and career guidance.

There was never such a problem. STEM is hard, that's why women tend to opt for it less. But from Marie Curie to Margaret Thatcher women were not held back in STEM.

[–]AccidentallyBorn 42 points43 points44 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

if there wasn’t a problem with men getting hired over equally or more qualified women then we wouldn’t need the outreach for girls and women regarding STEM education and career guidance.

This is categorically false. There are a myriad possible explanations and multiple factors that contribute to women's perceived "underrepresentation" in STEM.

The biggest being that most women just aren't naturally interested in tech or "things" as much as they are in people. There's loads of personality data showing culture-invariant gender differences in this area.

Plenty of women are interested, and they deserve the same opportunities as their male counterparts, but in reality they currently get more opportunity, not less.

It's absolutely fine to have an imbalance if one of the groups is simply less inclined to participate.

[–]majestic_tapir 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

if there wasn't a problem with men getting hired over equally or more qualified women

If you think this is specifically a female problem, you're blind. It's a person bias, no matter what.

You're less likely to be hired by a woman, if you're a man. That is an actual accurate fact. You're equally likely to be hired by a man, if you're a woman however. In some cases, moreso for things like secretary work, where some men think they live in the 60s and can slap an arse on their way to a meeting.

However, you're much less likely to be hired for a job if you have a "foreign sounding" name. If you apply for a job in the UK and your name is "Rajesh Singh", good fucking luck. Female names and male names are irrelevant, the bias is based on what country you live in, and the inherent bias that the hiring person has, not some conspiracy where men are keeping women down.

I don't know about you guys but I'm in a very heavily male dominated field and within the past few years I've worked with some women who were clearly diversity hires. It's completely anecdotal but all but one of these 5 girls should've actually been hired. They have the worst work ethic in the company and underperform. Taking extra long breaks, coming in late consistently, not being on task while at work etc.

The other girl I mentioned is great and is an asset to the team, definitely better at her job than multiple men who have been working for 20+ years.

[–]GulchDale 22 points23 points24 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

And we should be clear here, there is nothing wrong with bringing in more women. Most IT teams wouldn't have an issue with it at all. It's the idea that they are shoehorning them into positions that they don't fit, and can't fire them without backlash no matter how much proof there is that they've been dogging it.

[–]mikesteane 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, there is if they are brought in as diversity hires over better men.

[–]Beautiful_Milk8838 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ask your co workers if they want to sue the company for discrimination. If you coworkers are allowed to take extra long breaks, coming in consistently late and not being on task without punishment that’s discrimination on you . You should be able to do the same

[–]drdeletus498 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

A lot easier said than done. There isn't enough substantial evidence to prove discrimination, not enough for a court of law at least

[–]waterim 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

If you guys complain to management and they don't anything about it then you've got a case. If you guys can record what you allege above then you can get the bucks in compensation. Poor black people who have shit education and shitty background find out ways to record discrimination, I'm sure you guys can you just need to record incidents and complaints over a span of time.

[–]drdeletus498 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think that starting with formal complaints in writing is a good start. Sadly I work in a restricted area and recording video and/or audio violates my contract. If I was to sue, having multiple ignored complaints on record would definitely strengthen the case.

As far as I'm concerned, the universities and scientific journals are dead, at least if you're looking for honest science. The only way forward is to start our own institutions and try to keep the axe-grinders out.

In an equal opportunity society, a specific demographic group attendance at a College should be about the same as their makeup of the total population. The only real exceptions to that would be when some group holds an interest in a specific thing. For example the childhood education sector is predominantly female, like how STEM fields have more men of all demographics because men hold more of an interest in STEM.

Facts speak for themselves, they don't have to be repeated over and over again to remind you. When someone is trying to drill something into your head that contradicts the factual evidence, you know something is wrong.

[–]vhisic -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

It does exclude them though, if there are no women getting these roles based on merit then we need to look at why. Im all for merit based hiring but there are issues with it so what im saying is rather than add a quota we need to figure out and address why they are unable to be the most qualified for these positions in many scenarios.

Can we find a better source for this?

Valid as it may be, it should be interpreted in the context of The Daily Caller being an extremely right-wing outlet which has published inaccurate information in the past.

If we're going to campaign for men's rights, I'd rather we did it without involving anything on the political spectrum of The Daily Caller. Yes, I know that more mainstream editors are reluctant to publish anything which might support us, but if this has happened, I would assumed it has been published elsewhere.

I don't view men's rights as an issue which has much in common any part of the traditionally-defined political spectrum - it's not a left or right-wing issue - and we should avoid unnecessary entanglements.

I can't speak for those countries, but I would assume it's the as in the US where that is illegal. Basically, it is illegal to use race, gender, religion, etc as a criteria for hiring.

Theory and practice are two very different things

[–]Rex9 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. The company I work for (Fortune 100) just got done with a big hiring binge. Not a single white person hired. As many women hired as they could justify. Meanwhile we're in an area where the demographic is probably 75+% white. They've been bending over backwards for a couple of years now to avoid white and/or male in a VERY male dominated field. I don't have an issue with hiring a qualified person, but we've gotten a very mixed bag as far as capability.

As far as I know, it was the U.S. that invented affirmative action, as a band-aid fix to the wounds left by apartheid. It was the other Western nations that copied the U.S., not the other way around.

"Apartheid" is another word for "segregation". Americans don't like that word, of course, because it puts them on the same level as S. Africa, but it's true: before the 1960s, the U.S. was an apartheid nation.

[–]AtemAndrew 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (29 children) | Copy Link

One might argue it's fallen into the right-wing spectrum simply due to how the left has defined themselves. It's an unfortunate case of being forced to 'define' ourselves by our enemies in that many on the left think that white people are bad, that MEN are bad, etc. Many on the left want to run on emotion rather than logic, 'listen and believe' rather than evidence, restriction rather than free speech. Any push for equality or egalitarianism, for mens' rights, will thus require pushing against the Left.

Beyond that, the more sources the better - more so if they aren't tied together traditionally, given how in-line most news sources are. An actual stat chart or something for the professor's claim would be nice as well. While it's obvious to many that affirmative action and diversity hiring may have resulted in people being hired due to their 'labels' rather than actual qualifications, we need more solid evidence for this rather than 'he-said, she-said'. At the minimum there was that case of David Duvall and the quickly buried blind study in Australia regarding gendered names, but...

[–]pargofan 14 points15 points16 points 4 years ago (22 children) | Copy Link

Ha. I said very much that below (which see)

[–]AtemAndrew 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

While I'm more than aware that traditionalism falls under the right wing (more irony in that much of what the left pushes invalidates the notion that they're attempting to break traditional gender roles and norms, but I digress), that particular issue is a bit more complex than simply 'we don't want our women dying/getting captured' or the like, ranging from potential issues with camaraderie to sexual assault within the military to the ways in which the police, firefighters, and the military have slowly been making their tests easier and easier to compensate.

Again, at this point it's less that Mens' Rights are a right-wing issue and more that the left works AGAINST Mens' Rights resulting in alignment and push towards the right. And again, there's the fact that simply advocating for Mens' Rights requires alignment WITH the right due to the want and need for facts and freedom of speech.

  • Feminists Against the Draft is a coalition of intersectional feminists and feminist allies who raise awareness about the military draft and oppose any attempts to expand Selective Service registration, with the ultimate goal of abolition of the draft. We believe a person’s desire to enter or oppose the U.S. military is hugely personal, we advocate for the rights of women and children domestically and abroad, and we emphasize the need for progress rather than “inclusion” for marginalized groups in unjust systems. As an organization started by and made up primarily of young people, we are importantly committed to lifting up the voices of young women and girls, queer people and BIPOC, and working class people. We particularly emphasize the importance of students and young people in building an inter-generational movement to end the draft that targets them. We also consider the over-recruitment of low-income Americans a disturbing iteration of the draft—the poverty draft—targeting marginalized and vulnerable people, and we push against military recruitment in our schools and communities. This group began at Dartmouth College in 2021, on the cusp of U.S. Supreme Court’s consideration of the case National Coalition for Men v. Selective Service System, a significant case regarding women and U.S. draft registration. Membership is open to anyone committed to pushing for the abolition of the Selective Service System or opposing draft expansion from a feminist perspective.

Noone wants an unpredictable, emotion-driven liability on a fire team.

[–]Huffers1010 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

If we're going to get into the political spectrum stuff, my view is that the single-axis left-to-right concept is ridiculously oversimplified and actually very unhelpful in that it encourages people to assume things about the views of others that may not be true, and may fuel unnecessary fires. Combining social and fiscal conservatism in a single group, for instance, is completely insane; many people support one but not the other.

With that in mind:

many on the left think that white people are bad, that MEN are bad, etc. Many on the left want to run on emotion rather than logic, 'listen and believe' rather than evidence, restriction rather than free speech. Any push for equality or egalitarianism, for mens' rights, will thus require pushing against the Left.

Well - yes - sort of. Some aspects of the left, perhaps, although there are many people who would see themselves as left-of-centre politically (including me, mildly) who are utterly horrified by the excesses of critical social justice and want nothing to do with it. On that basis I've long concluded that describing critical social justice, and particularly the social engineering in which it so inexpertly dabbles, as left-wing is not very fair. Excluding people from things on the basis of their protected characteristics is not typically left-wing behaviour; quite the opposite. It's actually right-wing behaviour, far-right behaviour, bordering on fascism. I take the position that it's a wolf in sheep's clothing from that perspective - evidence, perhaps, that politics is somewhat circular, because if you go far enough left, you end up on the right again.

[–]AtemAndrew 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Horseshoe theory is very much in effect, yes. And while I admit that I've begun to generalize while I ahem generally don't like to do so, I've simply seen, heard, and experienced far too many on the Left simply... going along with things while experiencing those on the right actually looking into things, poking holes or needling people on all sides.

Take this with a grain of salt since I can't find the studies in question (it's been a year or two, google can be bad about this stuff and I don't have the time to go looking), but there was at least two studies done on the matter. One showed that many Democrats generally tend to vote for their party while many Republicans will vote for whoever they think would do the best job, regardless of party. Similarly, another study was done that showed that while many Republicans will accept those with conflicting opinions (or perhaps it was simply Democrats in general) into their friends group and dating pools, Democrats, for the most part, will not.

[–]Huffers1010 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

I can't vote this up, sorry. Your blanket characterisation of what you're referring to as the left and right of the political spectrum is not one I recognise, perhaps exactly because of the issues I mention above - those things just aren't that well defined.

I can't fairly describe the American Christian right as people who are particularly given to the sort of looking-into-things you describe. I see many of those people as looking for ways to express their religious dogma in their politics, and to force other people to conform to their view of proper behaviour that's based on not much more than what they've been told to think by authority figures in the church. They're reckoned to be the polar opposite of critical social justice people, but I view those people as having an equally dogmatic worldview that is probably at least as informed by unquestioned obedience to an ideology and its authority figures. It's no great surprise that critical social justice has so much in common with religion, which is one of the reasons they're so difficult to talk to; an amygdala response is in effect (we must be careful not to do the same).

I think we can probably agree that those two worldviews are representative of extremism and both are probably equally flawed (our problem is that the traditionally-leftist one is being listened to more than it should be). The problem with the traditional left-right spectrum is that it doesn't have any room for that subtlety and can't separate those extremist worldviews from more mainstream opinion. Most people, including me, would accept that some aspects of traditional conservatism or traditional liberalism (in the American political sense of "liberal") are useful to varying degrees in varying situations, and that people who hold a range of those views are not necessarily bad people.

The other thing that may be worth taking into consideration here is that I am not in the USA. From almost anywhere outside the USA but inside the first world, with mainstream first world politics, American politics looks skewed to the right in a way that's sometimes a bit offputting. From a worldwide perspective, and I think this is pretty objective, you have the democratic party, who are very much right of centre, then you have the republican party, who are crazy. I presume there is an American Communist Party, but honestly, in mainstream politics, you don't really have any meaningful representation of the left, and that's not good. Yes, the democrats may be adopting a lot of critical social justice as a flag of convenience, and in the regrettable two-horse race we get in first-past-the-post elections I can understand wanting to make a meaningful vote against that, but that's all the evidence you need, in my view, that this is nothing like a left-right issue.

Oh, and edit - yes, horseshoe effect, at least in a sense. What the opposing points of view here want is very different - in part, the extreme left wants to benefit women, while at least elements of the extreme right would be happy to see men in a similar position to the one they were in a century ago. They want, ostensibly, wildly different things. They're just using shockingly similar tactics to do it - racism, sexism, every other hideous prejudice you can imagine. They won't like being compared because their goals are different, but their misbehaviour is near-identical.

Where the hell do you come up with this nonsense lol

It's a matter of perspective. If you consider the global perspective, it's true.

More or less all mainstream American politics is skewed pretty significantly to the right compared to most of western Europe, or even Australia, which, by comparison, makes the Democrats look left of... well, the Republicans, which isn't very hard. The reason everyone thought Bernie Sanders was so unusual is that he is more or less the only actual left-leaning politician most Americans have ever even heard of. Most of what he came out with is pretty much business as usual in the rest of the free world. To give you a counterexample, Obamacare wouldn't have been criticised as socialism in most places; it'd have been decried as far too likely to play into the hands of big business like a fiscal conservative would.

I think this graphic is a reasonable picture of the actual global situation. None of this is intended as criticism, it's just a perspective thing, and another reason I don't like the traditional left-to-right monodimensional political spectrum.

On that basis I've long concluded that describing critical social justice, and particularly the social engineering in which it so inexpertly dabbles, as left-wing is not very fair.

This is completely detached from reality.

Excluding people from things on the basis of their protected characteristics is not typically left-wing behaviour; quite the opposite. It's actually right-wing behaviour, far-right behaviour, bordering on fascism.

Setting aside whether this is true or not, I don't care what's typical.

I care what's happening now, and what's happening now is that the left is dividing and excluding based on immutable characteristics.

More left wing propaganda. Please tell me the media outlets that haven't published inaccurate information? Just for a start this rules out The Guardian, The Atlantic, The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, Business Insider, Newsweek, BBC, Daily Beast, NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, Yahoo, Google, Wikipedia, Reuters, Associated Press, Huffington Post, LA Times, USA Today.

This right here. It's how you know you're in an echo chamber vs a useful subreddit. Nowhere is there any evidence being presented, just some back and forth bullshit click bait drama that reinforces peoples' beliefs.

While I agree that this subreddit is often an echo chamber, you could’ve googled sources yourself and added them.

This seems to be one that confirms it, although there are others with the opposite conclusion: https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2015/04/14/study-suggests-stem-faculty-hiring-favors-women-over-men

I do agree, but we might see change in the future as there are more leftists getting on the subject, so that's great. Honestly even in this thread I can see some rightist BS and it bothers me to see all of this being tangled with men's rights, this makes it very easy for any leftist who does not have any clue about men's rights to mislabel the whole movement and idea of men's rights.

[–]g1455ofwater 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Then those leftists are misandrists.

I do think they are, yes. They just don't know any better, I'm just the kind of guy who's not willing to keep things that way.

[–]Huffers1010 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No idea why this has been downvoted. Seems entirely reasonable to me. We must not allow ourselves to lose our unity of purpose by squabbling over really nothing more than a definition of what left- and right-leaning politics is.

I suspect most of the people reading this thread agree on the overwhelming majority of issues and we'd do well to focus on that.

[–]Dynged 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

To be fair, leftists are going to label any MR activism as far right or alt right. If leftists could critically evaluate evidence without injecting thier bias into it, they very likely wouldn't be leftists to begin with. That's not to say the far right is any better.

[–]StarZax 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's a very big generalization and deliberately overlooks the fact that more and more leftists are getting to know the movement (https://subredditstats.com/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates , the stats are far from impressive, I'd like to see it go faster, but it's obviously a long term struggle and I think it's going pretty well)

Making shortcuts to basically say left = emotional reaction, right = facts, logic and pragmatism only, is just very very wrong, it's a meme.

And I wasn't even talking about that in the first place, the fact that I'm getting downvoted just because I'm pointing out that the fact that a movement seen as reactionary and oppositional is a harmful image tells me a lot. Feminism didn't become what it is just because it had an image of a left-wing movement, it had a more general image that transcended the political spectrum a little bit, it's not very complicated to think that trying to do the same might be a good idea.

And again, the fact that people come and mix everything up, say "ohlala telling the truth is not good, look I link articles that talk about immigration and other impertinent subjects to say that if I'm right on one, I'm right about the other" not only is just a silly argument, it also doesn't help at all and does a disservice to the cause (yes, that's exactly what people used to say to feminists who talked shit about men, they used to make fun of them, but frankly from what I can see here, the rhetorical process doesn't necessarily have anything to envy them)

[–]Huffers1010 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Couldn't agree more. I don't think that modern critical social justice, which is the founding tenet of a lot of this anti-guy stuff, is really an issue of the left or right. It's traditionally viewed as being on the left, but should it be, really? Throwing people out of things for being the wrong sex or race? That's not left-wing behaviour.

Either way, this is not a useful fight to have. A lot of the people discussing this here will be Americans whose view of the traditional political spectrum is affected by a national politics which leans profoundly right of centre, which is not good for them or us - that's not intended as an attack, just an encouragement to stand back and try to look at this dispassionately, because we have just the same problems outside the USA.

There is a tendency here to try to lump people into groups so they are easier to criticise. Ah, all leftists think this, all feminists think this, anyone who voted for Trump is a fascist, anyone who voted for Biden is a communist, etc. None of that is true and accusing people of holding views they don't hold doesn't help us convince anyone.

Because if not then frankly it is a sexist thing to say. It's just like how at one of my internships a woman got backlash for saying there were tons of extra women in other departments who could do a better job than the men in her department.

University of Washington should say "PERHAPS, and regardless here's why it creates a more effective overall faculty team"

because in fields like engineering it does. I don't care how good your hammer is, I don't need a tool box full of fancy hammers. sometimes I need a wrench, or pliers, or some weird specialty tool that's only good for one thing.

Sometimes it's okay to have gender bias, sometimes it can even be good. I just wish we would ACKNOWLEDGE it

Instead UoW has alienated both men and women in their response.

Uhm, ... isn't he technically correct?

I mean, isn't it true, at least generally, and if fair:

"Half of the female STEM faculty in the U.S. were hired over more qualified men and half of the female STEM faculty in the U.S. were hired over less qualified men." - I mean heck, if one digs deep enough, for any two given candidates, they won't be precisely equally qualified ... one will be more, one will be less, and if we split that all out by gender, one would expect, if all is fair, that half will be more qualified, and half less.

So ... maybe the statement was taken out of context?

Custody battles get Mom’s the custody 90% of the time. 90% of all prison inmates and death sentences are men. 80% of all homocides are men. 70% of all suicides are men. 90% reach out for help before suicide but are turned away. The Education system is geared against dudes. Dudes get 60% longer sentences for the same crime as a woman.

This could also mean men are hiring less qualified women just because they want a pretty face around the office... as if any of the men hiring these women are doing it for the sake of "social justice".
