I read this article on Wired where a data scientist aggregated data of 11k couples and used machine learning to comb through the data they found that the things we (and OLD in particular) focus on had a negligible positive impact on long-term relationship happiness.

These "shiny" things include:

  • Physical attributes like height, attractiveness, etc
  • Wealth signifiers
  • Race
  • Profession
  • Sexy name

What they found did have a positive impact on long-term relationship happiness are the answers to the following questions:

  1. Were you satisfied with your life before you met your SO?
  2. Were you free from depression before you met your SO?
  3. Did you have a positive affect before you met your SO?

Folks who responded "Yes" to these three questions were the greatest predictor of being happy in a long-term relationship.

From the article: "Further—and this was quite striking—how a person answered questions about themselves was roughly four times more predictive of their relationship happiness than all the traits of their romantic partner combined."

What do y'all think? Does this vibe with your life experience? It does for me. I could have answered "Yes" to those three before I met my wife. I did make the same "mistake" as most people in looking for those shiny things though. My wife is attractive, independently wealthy, same race and religion, and has a high-status profession.
