Something that has entered common nomenclature in the past few years is "power imbalance".

It's almost always used in a way to accuse a man of unfairly leveraging some advantage he has over a woman in order to 'coerce' her into sex that she otherwise wouldn't (or shouldn't) engage in.

The problem with this narrative is that, short of straight up quid-pro-quo situations (ie - have sex with me or lose your job) it flies in the face of women's own stated preferences in men.

I don't think it's controversial to say that, on average, women prefer:

  • Men who are significantly taller than themselves
  • Men who are significantly stronger than themselves
  • Men who have a higher income than themselves
  • Men who have higher status than themselves (fame, etc)
  • Men who are more assertive than themselves (asking out, etc)

The last 3 often coincide with a larger age gap, which is also often cited as a "power imbalance" .

The only caveat with these things are that they are power imbalances that benefits the woman in some way (ie 'I feel protected with him') or ('he can provide for the family) etc. But does that make it suddenly not a problem because it serves the woman's interests?

You hear tons of stories about how "problematic" it is for a man to 'take advantage' of his position when dating.

Now let's see what women never discuss as significant power imbalances.

  • A young hot girl dating an older ugly guy
  • A girl that has a far greater social support system than the guy
  • An older woman dating a younger guy (cougar - go girl!)
  • A (hot) poor guy dating a rich woman
  • A nobody guy marrying a famous woman
  • A confident outgoing girl, dating a borderline autistic / shy guy

None of the above are ever cited as a "power imbalance" but, IMO, those have just as many real-life implications and chances for "abuse" and manipulation as the ones that are often cited for men.

So, my question is - why do you think women are never called out for using their various privileges to leverage advantages in relationships, when men, who have to spend years to work to gain a physique, enough status, and confidence is somehow suspect for using his status to on helpless naive woman?
