I trained and volunteered as a sexual assault advocate at a RCC for several years, focusing on this "underserved community" (of men). I was more successful than their existing programs but got starved out. Completely unwelcome. The problem's the higher up the power/authority hierarchy, the more anti-male it becomes. And the underlings absolutely know it. And know it's wrong more and more. And can't challenge it.

Doesn't change a thing. Compare the numbers served by gender. Of the 1000 US RAIN affiliates, a tiny fraction actually serve men once you get past the lies. (since that's is illegal discrimination).

An that doesn't count all the agencies who won't even sign the RAIN affiliate contract since it stipulates non-discrimination by gender. They won't even pretend to serve men.

When you say to people "sexual assault against women is not allowed" they get that. When you then say to people, "men are sexually assaulted too" they understand that that is equally not allowed. This merely adds a fair rule to an already agreed one.

Absolutely true, but the reality is that framing and emphasis matter, so while this is acceptable, we should honestly just come at this problem from a human perspective alone. If both men and women experience this, there's literally no need to differentiate. Our default stance should be human, and only if there's some salient need to differentiate by sex, sexuality or race, then we do so ... as a last resort.

That being said, with sexual assault, harassment, domestic violence, etc. all being essentially ignored with male victims, and decades of studies showing that we don't value male victims as highly as female, it's salient at this point in time to specifically note male victims.

I like this topic.

I was afraid that if no one else loved me, then no one at all would love me, and so, quite naturally, no one did love me, or if they did I refused to see it or interpreted it as a threat. I assumed that since women had the power to harm me that they would use it if they could, because why would they not harm such a monster? And basically people agreed with me, not with words but with the way they responded to my self-hate.

Oddly, the way out was through. I forgot to want the love of other people, and so because I wasn't so focused on other people noticing that I loved them, they were able to appreciate what I did do for them and they had room to love me back.

I don't know if you are a bigot, and the fact that you are willing to be convinced of a different position would imply that is not the case.

Note it isn't just me that had a problem with your original statement.

A couple of things here: 1. The assumption that the author has stated that anywhere that men's problems are lesser than women's problems. 2. You should expect support and empathy from people outside your group, but why effort? 3. You yourself have stated that being assaulted isn't on the list of priorities for you and shouldn't be for most men. However do you really think statistically that the number of men who have had their lives fully destroyed by false accusation is less than the number of men who have been sexually or physically abused? This isn't to imply that bad things that don't happen aren't bad, but proportionality (especially when we are talking about ways men are victimized) does matter. 4. Highlighting victimization does not require you denigrating other people's victimization. Furthermore, the fact that you find this as a connected duality belies the tribalism in the first place. 5. The implication of proportionality once again in women actually being attacked vs false accusations against men destroying lives is both statistically inaccurate AND dismissive of the absolute devastation of the act. Ask any male rape victim. 6. Unrelated attacking the author who did the right thing in pursuit of this point reinforces the message.

Your heart is in the right place, but you don't need to dismiss other issues more over directly connect them to advocate for the right thing.

Men's Rights doesn't require to make the other the lesser.

This is the part where you pick apart the study because it doesn't fit your own views and narratives and because rape/sexual assault is notoriously hard to track, let alone define.

Anyway, lets use it and rebut it shall we.

Hmm lets see. Though they include "being made to penetrate" as sexual violence, they do not classify it as rape, so if a woman is penetrated without her consent she is raped, if a man is made to penetrate he has not been raped, just experienced sexual violence, this means that though both were raped, only one would be counted in the statistics on rape.

Look at page 17. there the CDC lists up the definitions they use for the different categories of sexual violence reported in the report. Although CDC didn’t, I’ll assume you’re a decent human being and that you would agree that the definition of “being made to penetrate someone else” qualifies as rape just as much as the definition of rape CDC used. The two definitions are practically equal in language, except that for rape the victim must be penetrated. I’ll make an example: Forcing a woman to insert her tongue into the perpetrators anus would not be considered rape by the CDC’s definitions. That would be “being made to penetrate someone else”.

Already now you should be able to guess as to why the numbers (1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men) of rape victims quoted from the report in my view, skew the real numbers. Let’s try to amend that by counting “being made to penetrate someone else” as rape despite CDC not doing so (I’ll get back to two theories as to why CDC didn’t).

In short, in everything that follows I’ll count “being made to penetrate someone else” as rape. Please state if you disagree with that, and if so, please explain why.

Now look at tables 2.1 and 2.2 on pages 18-19. Table 2.1 is prevalence numbers for female victims of the different categories of sexual violence. Table 2.2 is the same table for male victims.

There are two column groups: Lifetime and “Last 12 months”, each having a “weighted %”-column and an “Estimated number of victims”-column.

Let’s look at the lifetime numbers first: 18.3% of women reports rape – that nearly 1 in 5. 1.4% of men reports rape – that’s 1 in 71.

but the story doesn’t end there: 4.8% of men reports “being made to penetrate someone else” – that’s nearly 1 in 20.

I can’t just add 4.8 and 1.4 to get 6.2% of men raped as I don’t know how many, if any, men reported both – then they should be counted only once as this counts victims and not incidents. So I’ll just use the 4.8 number as stand in for male rape although I know it probably is somewhere between 4.8 and 6.2.

By these numbers we will out of a pool of 100 men and 100 women we’ll find 20 female victims and 5 male victims.

That gives that every 5th rape victim is a man 5/(5+20)

98.2% of the female rape victims state that the perpetrator was a man (which probably implies that 1,8% of the perpetrators were a woman). 79.2% of the male victims of being made to penetrate someone else reports that the perpetrator was a woman (page 24). Which makes 20% of the perpetrators a man. That means that 4 out of 5 rapists of men are women. Which again would mean that 1 in every 5.25 (4/(4+21)) rape victims alive is a man raped by a woman.

That was the lifetime numbers, now let’s look at the “last 12 months” columns in those two tables: 1.1% of women reports rape in the last 12 months. 1.1% of men reports having been made to penetrate someone else in the last 12 months.

Of all rape victims victimized In the last 12 months every second rape victim was a man.

Now, the report doesn’t provide us with perpetrator statistics for the last 12 months numbers, but if one assume that it’s about the same distribution as it is for lifetime numbers then about 40% of rape victims in the last 12 months were raped by a woman.

And if that wasn’t bad enough: Consider that this survey did not survey prisoners. According to BJS more than a quarter of sexual abuse of male prisoners are perpetrated by female prisoner officials. It’s even worse for juvenile detentions.

According to NISVS 2010 there are a much lower ratio between the lifetime numbers and the “last 12 months” number for men than for women. I think there are several factors for this:

1) Research have shown that men are less likely to report childhood sexual abuse than women.

2) Perhaps women feel more entitled to sex these days and more empowered to initiate sex more often. And as a result they fail to obtain consent more often.

3) Men have become more aware of the issue, not least thanks to places like this sub.

4) Research on this subject doesn’t get away as easy with being sexist and prejudiced.

I’ll expand a bit on point 4. One example is the NISVS 2010 Report itself in the way it categorized “being made to penetrate someone else”. That choice most certainly was influenced by feminist Mary P Koss who has served on advisory boards in the CDC in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. She wrote a paper in 1993 on methodologies for measuring rape prevalence where she stated:

Although consideration of male victims is within the scope of the legal statutes, it is important to restrict the term rape to instances where male victims were penetrated by offenders. It is inappropriate to consider as a rape victim a man who engages in unwanted sexual intercourse with a woman.

Among men, the terms “sex” and “sexual relations” may activate schemas for situations where they penetrated women. Clarification is necessary to ensure that male respondents realize that the situations of interest are those in which they were penetrated forcibly and against their will by another person, and not situations where they felt pressure or coercion to have sexual relations with a woman partner.

If men and boys are to be included, care must be taken to ensure that their data are accurate counterparts of rape prevalence among women. This means that men must be reporting instances where they experienced penetration of their own bodies (or attempts).

There exists other studies from the 1990’s which found that about 50% more men than women reported unwanted sexual intercourse. Those studies did not pick up any traction, while Koss’ studies – the most famous being the one published in 1985 with Ms Magazine – which completely ignored male victims. (Male respondents were asked whether they had forced someone to sex while not being asked whether they themselves had been forced to sex).

And so the impression that male rape is rare is created and cemented. And I don’t see any real effort from feminists to change this. I haven’t seen any feminists (with the exception of ballgame from FeministCritics – but it must be noted that he has been called an anti-feminist on several other feminist blogs) do the break-down of the NISVS 2010 Report I did. It’s not that no feminists wrote about NISVS 2010, several did. No-one mentioned the last 12 months numbers and when they are brought in the comments fields by me or other we are called MRAs and accused for cherry-picking numbers. In my view if someone point out the numbers you “forgot” it’s not them who are cherry-picking.

Actually if you will note the time it took me about 30 minutes to respond to you. During this 30 minute time period I was reading the report you linked, researching it and I came upon a blog post which did a very good job of summarizing the issue with the report and which has a large amount of content in dealing with that report.

As I have only just now read that report I felt it much more prudent to defer to someone who has clearly spent way more time than I have reading, researching and rebutting the report.

As such I used his words and linked to his site along with including my own statements and including asking you direct questions in the text, questions I will note you didn't answer, probably because you didn't actually bother to read the response.

You're right. Men are the oppressed class and that's why your life is how it is.

If that is what you took from this you are truly in need of mental counseling.

According to this you are still right. Women are the majority of victims of sexual assault according to that paper. However, that majority is by a slim margin and makes sense when you realise that the planet has more women than men on it, so statistically women will be the majority of most things on this planet.

Men aren't oppressed, some men are without question, as are some women.

The law should absolutely not treat groups differently; it should treat individual cases appropriately based on the circumstance. Egalitarianism doesn't mean everything has to be entirely equal or that there will always be equality of outcome. Just that everyone should have equal opportunity

E.g. when it comes to groping, even if one claims "men are women are different; a man's less likely to feel threatened by groping" that wouldn't justify that law treating men and women as a whole differently regarding sexual harassment, having different laws for either group, or a judge saying "because he's a man being groped by a woman, I'm going to assume he's less bothered by it than if he were a woman"

Because people are not groups or generalizations. Any particular man who was groped could have felt violated by her behavior or threatened or for whatever reason not have been okay with it. He could have felt more violated than some women would have felt. it wouldn't be just at all for him to not be taken seriously because he's apart of a group that's stereotyped as not being bothered by it

Let me start with the fact that I agreed with your original point. The law is too archaic and hasn't adapted to a new type of female that is acting a lot more independent. I was simply trying to add some nuance to the discussion.

When you allow the law to be overly flexible for how people 'feel' about a crime then you're left a huge potential hole for abuse.

What about a women who was raped repeatedly but due to 'feelings' doesn't feel raped? What about the opposite? A women that was in a relationship and had consensual sex but later 'felt' like is was rape? What do we do with a man who was raped but due to social pressure denies it? Or a man that wants to play a game many gold digging females play? Getting near a powerful person and then claiming abuse for cash and prizes?

My theory on the core problem going on with all this is that rape and sexual assault are crimes with very very little hard evidence. Therefore it becomes a game of who has the most money for defense and who has the better reputation. Before feminism men won more of these cases then they probably deserved because of the power imbalance. After feminism we've had a flip and women are winning more of these cases then they deserve because of a new power imbalance (the wrong headed idea that there's a current evil patriarchy). Judges and juries are all humans that rely on religion, culture, emotion and instinct in their decisions.

Ben does a good job talking about the real problem being the variety of cultural differences around how we as a nation see sex. In some cultures we've turned sex into a transactional thing. In other's it's more private and our laws struggle to keep up with the differences. To simplify women can't fuck 5 guys a week in a completely transactional manner and then claim rape when it's convenient for them socially and financially; the law won't trust that female even if she was legitimately raped. The currently legal system assumes women as celibate creatures that guard and prize their sexuality which most today are not.

I was a jock in highschool and had several girls smack me on the ass. Another one grabbed my balls. Not only did it not bother me but I enjoyed it. Just being honest. Probably has something to do with most men being hungry for sexual attention and most women receiving too much of it. Or something. I have no idea. What really bothered me was the time I got in a fist fight and lost.

Having said that, it would have been completely different if I was a boy and it was an adult woman. That shit is very harmful and should be treated like the pedophilia it is. And I imagine gay men or men who just plain aren't like me don't appreciate being grabbed.

I just worry we're getting way too carried away and will soon be living in a quasi-puritanical society. I was watching Frasier the other day and there was a scene where Bulldog smacks Roz's ass she responds by smacking him in the head. If a TV show portrayed that scene today feminists would scream bloody murder.

I honestly don't know what the answer is. It seems like when a woman receives the slightest discomfort it is regarded as a crime against humanity, whereas a twelve year old boy can get raped and he's told "congratulations." We certainly need more attention paid to male victims (especially boys) of real assault but some women are going way overboard in the portrayal of themselves as "traumatized victims". Victimhood is now a marker of social status, which is incredibly disturbing. I mean some of these feminist polls about sexual assault list things like "hearing an offensive joke" or "receiving an unwanted kiss". I wouldn't be surprised if we end up back in a sex-segregation scenario. Men in Japan are now demanding male-only train cars so they won't be falsely accused of groping, and men are refusing to meet alone with women in business environments.

How am I troll? Look at my previous posts. I fully support men's rights. I'm just being honest. When I was in highschool and a pretty girl smacked my ass I didn't start crying and run home. I was glad for the attention. I specifically said that not all young men would react the same way, and that we need to start taking female pedophilia seriously. I also said that feminist attempts to portray typical and harmless male-female interactions as brutal sexual assault creates an atmosphere of terror for both sexes.

Especially noteworthy is that polls about sexual assault look very different depending on how the questions are asked. For example, when women are asked "have you ever been sexually assaulted?" they get a much lower figure than if they ask ten questions including stuff like "have you ever heard a sexual joke that you found offensive?"

What I'm saying here seems perfectively reasonable on my end. Feminists are certainly not doing women any favors by creating this atmosphere of terror. There's a post on the front page noting that the "victimhoood narrative" being taught in schools is "fueling anxiety among young women." Yeah no shit. If I were falsely taught that the patriarchy was out to get me and there was a one in four chance I'd be raped I'd be frightened too.

I had a similar experience, but I'm always reluctant to call it a sexual assault. It seems demeaning to the people who have suffered way worse than I have.

The co-worker who groped me wasn't the problem in my situation. She was just a dumb kid who didn't know any better. The thing that gets me was that our boss laughed me out of the office when I reported her. I'm sure part of it was just being a plain old shitty manager, but part of it was definitely thanks to the "sexual harassment only happens to women" stereotype. I mean, she literally said that. She just didn't get that what was going on was a problem.

So, this situation could have been resolved and gone away if my boss had just had a conversation with my co-worker and told her to knock it off. But, it got worse (for me) because of that shitty boss's indifference.

I think that sort of indifference is what leads feminists to over-state that sort of thing when it happens to women. You tell your boss somebody's being a jerk, and your boss doesn't do anything; your choices are either to let it continue or make a big deal and use the strongest words you can technically use to describe the situation.

I hate to say it, but maybe the right answer is for men to start using the strong words and leading our own witch hunts; then eventually let it calm down as people find reasonable ways to deal with the small shit?

I worked in retail about nine years ago, and I was a bit down on my luck at the time so I had these jeans that had a hole around my ass (not that big mind you, but if you looked for it, it was noticeable). One day I was leaning on a counter doing some work and one of the girls working there (the pretty and entitled type) ran up behind me and shoved her finger in the hole and up my asshole. I felt slightly violated (and I'm a victim of long term childhood sexual abuse, I might add) but after my initial reaction and bitching for a few I was cool with it.

So I went in for my revenge. I mean, she basically finger raped my ass which definitely would count as sodomy if I were a girl- and would for me too, except for the fact that she's a girl and I'm the guy so it would somehow be me who assaulted her or something. So one day when she came in, I went up to her and slapped her ass, not as hard as possible- but definitely not a pat either. And of course, cue the typical reaction- omg you're such a disgusting pig, how dare you do that to me, a girl! ad infinitum. I was flabbergasted. My young 20 year old eyes were definitely opened that day and at that job in general. Man, I shudder to remember how I acted around the girls that worked there and the things I said to them- I could've been in some serious trouble if it were today.

Well that selfsame reaction is how men are responded to whenever the even try to broach the topic. 'Dam man you should've taken one for the team' or 'what're you complaining about? You know you wanted it.' Or how about the comments section on any article about a student being assaulted by a female teacher?

Also, many people saw what she did. Not one person spoke up for me or defended me- instead I was laughed at by everybody like it was all a big joke.

At least women have the benefit of action being taken for them and being able to talk about it. I was sexually abused as a child for over a year of my life- forced to do some of the most vile things no child should have to- if I even bring it up I get put down, insulted and told off a la you need to get over it. Any time I hear a woman speaking about their experiences it's the most 'empowering' thing ever.

Whatever. There are double standards but you seem to want to ignore them and stick more to the woman's side if anything.

And maybe if what happened to me was treated with the same gravitas as when I did that to her- instead of everybody having a good laugh at me when she did it- then I would have reacted appropriately instead of treating it as a joke. I did say this was an eye opener for me- I still didn't get the whole 'I can do it to you but you can't do it to me' double standard yet. I was young and this was around 2007/2008.

And honestly I never saw it as an assault even though I should've, mainly because of the way that she and the other girls were having a good laugh at my expense. I don't even like touching my own asshole and cringe when I take a shower at times- and yet what she did to me merited nothing more than literally a 30 second tirade that culminated in laughter. What's the way guys usually do things? We get even and try to pay back the prank two fold. But of course since she's a girl normal rules never apply since they're so precious.

And lastly I did say I was sexually abused as a child. Maybe in the grand scheme of things- because of the things I was forced to do during my childhood- I just didn't see these kinds of things on the same level. And they're not. But they should be treated seriously as well. I have learned that much by now.

The following is a very informed comment by Karen Straughan in response to a feminist who thinks the many blatant sexists among feminists aren't real feminists:

So what you're saying is that you, a commenter using a username on an internet forum are the true feminist, and the feminists actually responsible for changing the laws, writing the academic theory, teaching the courses, influencing the public policies, and the massive, well-funded feminist organizations with thousands and thousands of members all of whom call themselves feminists... they are not "real feminists".

That's not just "no true Scotsman". That's delusional self deception.

Listen, if you want to call yourself a feminist, I don't care. I've been investigating feminism for more than 9 years now, and people like you used to piss me off, because to my mind all you were doing was providing cover and ballast for the powerful political and academic feminists you claim are just jerks. And believe me, they ARE jerks. If you knew half of what I know about the things they've done under the banner of feminism, maybe you'd stop calling yourself one.

But I want you to know. You don't matter. You're not the director of the Feminist Majority Foundation and editor of Ms. Magazine, Katherine Spillar, who said of domestic violence: "Well, that's just a clean-up word for wife-beating," and went on to add that regarding male victims of dating violence, "we know it's not girls beating up boys, it's boys beating up girls."

You're not Jan Reimer, former mayor of Edmonton and long-time head of Alberta's Network of Women's Shelters, who just a few years ago refused to appear on a TV program discussing male victims of domestic violence, because for her to even show up and discuss it would lend legitimacy to the idea that they exist.

You're not Mary P Koss, who describes male victims of female rapists in her academic papers as being not rape victims because they were "ambivalent about their sexual desires" (if you don't know what that means, it's that they actually wanted it), and then went on to define them out of the definition of rape in the CDC's research because it's inappropriate to consider what happened to them rape.

You're not the National Organization for Women, and its associated legal foundations, who lobbied to replace the gender neutral federal Family Violence Prevention and Services Act of 1984 with the obscenely gendered Violence Against Women Act of 1994. The passing of that law cut male victims out of support services and legal assistance in more than 60 passages, just because they were male.

You're not the Florida chapter of the NOW, who successfully lobbied to have Governor Rick Scott veto not one, but two alimony reform bills in the last ten years, bills that had passed both houses with overwhelming bipartisan support, and were supported by more than 70% of the electorate.

You're not the feminist group in Maryland who convinced every female member of the House on both sides of the aisle to walk off the floor when a shared parenting bill came up for a vote, meaning the quorum could not be met and the bill died then and there.

You're not the feminists in Canada agitating to remove sexual assault from the normal criminal courts, into quasi-criminal courts of equity where the burden of proof would be lowered, the defendant could be compelled to testify, discovery would go both ways, and defendants would not be entitled to a public defender.

You're not Professor Elizabeth Sheehy, who wrote a book advocating that women not only have the right to murder their husbands without fear of prosecution if they make a claim of abuse, but that they have the moral responsibility to murder their husbands.

You're not the feminist legal scholars and advocates who successfully changed rape laws such that a woman's history of making multiple false allegations of rape can be excluded from evidence at trial because it's "part of her sexual history."

You're not the feminists who splattered the media with the false claim that putting your penis in a passed-out woman's mouth is "not a crime" in Oklahoma, because the prosecutor was incompetent and charged the defendant under an inappropriate statute (forcible sodomy) and the higher court refused to expand the definition of that statute beyond its intended scope when there was already a perfectly good one (sexual battery) already there. You're not the idiot feminists lying to the public and potentially putting women in Oklahoma at risk by telling potential offenders there's a "legal" way to rape them.

And you're none of the hundreds or thousands of feminist scholars, writers, thinkers, researchers, teachers and philosophers who constructed and propagate the body of bunkum theories upon which all of these atrocities are based.

You're the true feminist. Some random person on the internet.
