Give the most vague short answer possible using complex words and leave it at that. Make them ask for a detailed answer or just assume they got it and you didn't need to explain it further. If there is any backfire just say you've been accused of mansplaining and while you were offended by that attack you decided to take it on board and not do it anymore. Let it bite them in the ass. They don't want thorough detailed answers then just give the bare essentials and presume they are smart enough to fill in the blanks.

My first thought when I was introduced to the term "mansplaining" was, "Well, that's happened to me countless times". Yet I'm a man, so apparently it only becomes a special offense when experienced by women. Likewise, I've heard numerous women interns complaining that that their ideas are not taken seriously, that men talk over them at meetings, etc. Always, the interpretation is "It's because I'm a woman". I explain to them that what they experienced is what every young intern experiences. It's got nothing to do with being women; it has to do with the simple fact that seasoned professions many years their senior assume recent graduates lack competence. That may be a prejudice, but it's got nothing to do with gender.

Definition of concept creep. Originally what man's planning is is a man explaining something to a woman despite the fact that she is more knowledgeable on the subject than he is. So an example of what man's planning originally was would be a male sports reporter explaining something about space travel to a female astronaut (in that case it wouldn't make sense to assume that he knows more about the subject than she does).

But some people have begun to apply this term to any instance of men explaining anything. Concept creep.

The most common defense for using it would be "it just means when you try to explain things to someone who knows more than you" to which you can then ask, then why call it "mansplaining"?

They'll usually respond something in the vein of "lol because men do it more".

The best argument you can shoot back with would be:

"If the argument is that 'group that does more action x means that x should be prefixed with group name', then it logically follows that committing crime should be called 'blacking' because I'm average, black people commit more crime in the US"

And watch them squirm.

I'm a chatterbox. I will be the first to answer a question in meetings and will always explain stuff our give my opinion. A few years ago when I was still finding my feet as a team leader I was advised to talk less and give other people a chance as shy female colleagues didn't like that I would 'take over meetings' The next call I was on I didn't say a thing and it was the most awkward call ever because the only person talking was the one leading the meeting and none of their questions got answered.

Any other scenario wherein you're explaining something and the person ISN'T knowledgeable, that's just simple explanation.

Make all statements in the form of a question. If you need to "tell" turn it into a presumption with a question.

No one likes to be explained to. In sales they say "questions push people away and questions draw them in."
