Just had a boy. My wife was really pushing for him to be circumcised. Her OB friend was pushing it. All her friends who had boys were pushing. We spoke to a Pediatrician who told us that there are no medical reasons for it. It’s all just cosmetic or cultural purposes. Debunked all the nonsense about UTIs and shit with my wife. Felt good knowing I saved my son from being mutilated.

As a woman, I really don’t understand circumcision. When I was pregnant I told my husband that I’m don’t going to spend 9 months sacrificing and eating healthy and all that to grow this perfect baby only to have some asshat chop part of the baby that I spent 9 months growing off! Now a days, most people don't think about it. My father never thought about the fact that he had his genitals mutilated when he was young. He only started thinking about it when I brought it up a few years ago.

It's disgusting, and it's fucking wrong. Just like a million other things in our society. Reddit is a fine example to find people who have disgusting and wrong ideas, that are just able to live within our society. One guy I'm arguing with thinks it's okay to discriminate based on race and gender to create a more diverse workplace, and another thinks it's okay for a woman to choose not to be a mother but a father has to be responsible for his actions. Crazy.

No one cares about men. I have this account I follow on facebook that posted something like "if life begins at conception MEN MUST PAY CHILD SUPPORT!" and all the comments talking about how men dont pay and are dead beats.

As if men dont pay child support and as if men have ANY say in reproductive rights and as if men dont get screwed over constantly when it comes to kids.

I remember a conversation with few of my colleagues when subject of circumcision came up. At first it was just a simple chat but then I brought up female circumcision and they instantly went "you mean to say mutilation. Its a horrible horrible thing, causes so much harm to wamen" and i was like "hold up. Just until a minute ago y'all were perfectly fine using term circumcision when it was about boys, why you suddenly insist on emphasising mutilation when it comes to girls. How is it different?"

"Oh its fine with boys, it hardly does anything to them, and with women it's such severe, harmful procedure and is so cruel and yada haha yada" it left me fuming...

The main reason I think is that not all or even most men are on board. Like it or not, a disturbing number of men out there truly resent being called mutilated, and even the implication that circumcision on babies is wrong makes them feel personally attacked. It's how most of the threads on the subject go on reddit. Plenty of responses that say let them wait until they're adults and can properly consent to such a procedure, but also plenty of men who are circumcised who chime in that they don't mind it. "It was done on me as a baby and I turned out just fine!" "I'm glad my parents had it done while I was a baby!" "It's better this way!"

Pushing to make it a choice is the right way to go. But for such a movement to make any headway, you're going to have to convince cut guys that even if they're happy now, they should have been able to choose for themselves.

It's because of a few things:

Religions which say you should do it.

Dads who want their kids to look like them.

People who have heard stories about it being unhygienic or socially abnormal.

Older doctors/nurses who grew up with that being the standard and they're set in their ways.

None of those are good reasons. If the person wants to do it when they're old enough to decide, that's fine. If there's a legitimate medical issue and that is the best form of treatment, also fine, but to remove a piece of their body for traditional or cosmetic reasons without consent is extremely concerning to me.

Infant circumcision, cosmetic surgery on intersex infants, denying abortion, denying transgender health care, denying euthanasia all fall into the same category of right to bodily autonomy that is being infringed on when it is not respected.

A lot of folks do it for religious reasons but throughout most of the world it is not the norm. I’ve had more friends opt out of it. I think the concern over not doing it is around social stigma, but that’s not really reason enough to go through with it.

My parents were very pro circumcision because I have a cousin who got his like caught on something and had to have it removed as an older person. I mean, it’s only really acceptable among the Jewish and USA. I don’t think there’s anywhere else that do it for ‘reasons’. I think there are some medical instances it’s a option but that’s it. In the UK you’d be hard pressed to find someone outside of those groups that would find it acceptable. You’d also be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t believe sometimes abortion is the best of a bad situation. Having your foreskin cut is genital mutilation, personally I only only think genuine medical reasons should be the only reason to do it to a baby. Why is it acceptable in USA? That’s a good question. I’m assuming that’s where you from, apologies if not.

There are multiple causes to it. Two simpler ones:

Traditionalists want to preserve the ritual without evaluating it on merit. From a religious standpoint (Judeo-christian tradition) science is a way understanding God (see Blaize Pascal, Louis Pasteur, etc.; and scientific discovery being a type of divine revelation), hence if we find a factual contradiction (as opposed to moral) it must be thoroughly examined and accurate science should win. The issue here is that the acceptance of anything new is uncomfortable.

On the other hand if we look at the how the left-wing thought was created and the factually incorrect base assumptions that need to be made for it to be coherent (a feature inherited by all left-wing ideologies), we would be able to see that an upholding of a standard should be abandoned as soon as it no longer benefits the movement. I think this is a tricky one. There’s health benefits for a child to be circumcised, and it isn’t always outside of the child’s best interest to get circumcised. Religious purposes aside, the buildup of bacteria and foreign bodies can be incredibly harmful to yourself and your potential sexual partners if IMMACULATE care isn’t taken. The choice made here needs to be in the best interest of the child, but it definitely shouldn’t be a “well this is what I want for him, so he gets it” type thing.

Personal opinion: being cut is way better, and that’s coming from someone who has been on both sides. I got a circumcision at 18 for medical reasons. But mannn, medical reasons aside, it is just way better being cut, cosmetically, and I wish my parents had’ve just got it out of the way when I was too young to remember, would’ve saved me like $2000 too. Honestly don’t see how it’s that bad. FemLe circumcision is bad because the clit is obviously nothing like the foreskin. Men don’t derive pleasure from the foreskin. They are completely different procedures, stop comparing the two. The boy won’t remember it. There are very rarely any problems that arise because of it, no more than normal problems that arise by having a foreskin, like mine. Being cut is a (little) bit more hygienic, and the girls mostly prefer cut (what, fucking is one of the penis’s two functions, its important). Yes, its by definition, mutilation. But it has benefits and no negative consequences. So yeah, I don’t get what the big deal is. Stop comparing it to female circumcision, and for god’s sake, stop comparing it to abortion.
